Over on kids tv in 1978, we saw the first series of "Grange Hill". There were no longer any more talent type shows, as both Opportunity Knocks & New Faces were axed. One particular person (who appeared on Opportunity Knocks as a One Man Band) was actually the warm up man on tv`s "Every Second Counts" in 1986, along with Paul Daniels...that was Bruce Thompson from Newbiggen-On-Sea. Unfortunately, the demise of the "talent" show didn`t continue. For in 1979, the ITV brought in the Saturday (shortlived) "Search For A Star" with Radio 2 DJ Steve Jones, and the BBC gave us the Sunday teatime "Rising Stars" with the late Lennie Bennet & Arthur Askey. The news based/light hearted "Nationwide" ran a survey in pursuit of keeping the "mile", as opposed to the "kilometre". 16,000 people were in favour of the mile, and just 500 backed the kilometre. 31 years on, hardly anyone can pronounce the word properly...We know it should be KIL-O METRE...but half the people say KILOM ETRE! Still backing the mile, then?! On a joke, when pounds changed to kilogrammes...A man walked into the greengrocer`s and said "A pound of King Edwards, please"....The shop assistant says "It`s Kilos now"....With a surprised look, the man said "Oh, a pound of kilos then"!!! This was also the year, when Suzi Quatro returned to the States to appear in "Happy Days" along with the Fonz (Henry Winkler). In the advert world, Heineken began running those ads with the tag line..."Heineken refreshes the parts other beers cannot reach", and Leonard Rossiter joined with Joan Collins in those Cinzano Bianco ads, "a hundred wines & spices"...tipping the drink all over Ms Joan! Here we are in 2009, with 250 years of the Vermouth drink...as 1978 was the 100th anniversary of the cultivation of the Jersey Royal potato! ;)

Grease was definately the word in 1978. Unfortunately, John & Olivia kept the wonderful Rose Royce stuck at #2. "Love Don`t Live Here Anymore", also recorded by Madonna, and Jimmy Nail too. Wouldn`t it have been great to hear a duet between Jimmy & Madonna?! As Arthur Mullard joined forces with Hylda Baker for a take on "You`re The One That I Want"...this was actually meant to be a duet between Arthur, along with Queenie Watts whom both starred in the sitcom with the late Mike Reid "Yus My Dear". Boney M were everywhere, and "Rasputin" quickly followed the recently flipped "Rivers Of Babylon" B side "Brown Girl In The Ring". Some would say that "Rivers Of Babylon" was the best seller of 1978...Although had the single, not been flipped over, then it would definately not have been! Dean Friedman was joined by uncredited Denise Marser for "Lucky Stars"...his biggest hit. "Sandy" was the week`s biggest climb for more Grease with John, going solo...Stranded at the Drive-In. Mick Jackson wrote "Blame It On The Boogie", and he battled it out with The Jacksons. Mick`s version was easily the better version, but the Jackson`s were bigger, though Mick was English. Ivor Biggun provided a few "laughs"...He was actually Doc Cox (who later appeared on "That`s Life" on tv). "The Winkers Song" was defined on the label as a "Misprint"!!! He`d even had a wink on a train, you know! :o Here ends the story of the man, that winked at the lady on the train! :o Definately a banned record, so bad that it couldn`t even be played today! ;) The Three Degrees joined forces with Donna Summer`s producer (Giorgio Moroder), and had a swift comeback, as Donna did a re-make via disco version of the Richard Harris classic. The biggest entry of the week was from the Boomtown Rats as 4 weeks later, Bob Geldof stood in the Top Of The Pops studio, and tore up a photo of John & Olivia...Classic TV! Father Abraham followed up "The Smurf Song". "Dippety Day" possibly worse! The multi coloured "Jonathon King" was travelling Europe, as ever and picked up a Euro smash by La Bionda. He got the bigger hit, as the original version missed the top 50. The Ramones had the aptly titled "Don`t Come Close". It should`ve been bigger, but maybe the harder sound was out with this disco come novelty, come easy listening definately in. We spare a thought for the excellent Gordon Lightfoot, who had just fallen out of the top 40 with "Daylight Katy"...a haunting song, never off the airwaves during the Autumn of 1978, that only peaked at #41 Officially. Slightly further down was the last hit from Brotherhood Of Man "The Middle Of The Night". Unfortunately, the night had fallen for them...and it definately wasn`t "alright in the middle of the night uh-huh".

Hang around for the full up to minute combined singles...

I'm sorry, but is it not Barbra StrEIsand? I before E except after C and in Streisand, eh?

Anyway, hopefully Editors album will be #1 next week and I can't really see what could stop it with the possible exception of Taio Cruz (and Chipmunk, Sats and Shakira will all be at least top ten). And I'm slightly surprised to see Chipmunk topping both digital AND physical chart this week, were his physicals this strong with Diamond Rings or CDC? I use the word 'strong' liberally here as physical sales are never strong of course.

Next week's number 1 is going to be close and possibly quite shocking if preorders are anbything to go by - I think Alex will probably miss number 1 in favour of Nobbie...

JLS' sales are possibly going to be huge being number 1 on pre-orders with still a month to go before the release...

Considering that Beat Again is the best selling physical single of the year so far, it's rather unsurprising to see EIL's pre-order at #1 so early. I'd be surprised if EIL outsells BA physically overall though still...

True; but when you consider The Burke and Williams are released next week, I would've expected either one of them to be dominant in the chart as opposed to just top 5 appearances

Here come the combined singles. Compiled this way...The Top 20 based on Chart Show tv, but without airplay & including todays sales. The 21-40 is based on a mish-mash of physical & download sales. = Position on Chart Show tv

Over 70,000 for Chipmunk, that`s nearly 40,000 more than those Saturday girls.

Very interesting stuff on a Friday night as ever.

I'm very surprised Taio Cruz is nowhere to be seen on pre-album orders.

If anything I would have expected it to be more popular than the Editors who release their third (and according to the majority of reviews I've seen) and worst album to date.

As for next week's singles chart I fear the beginning of the Simon Cowell monopolisation of the charts through to at least mid January 2010; thank to the brain dead zombies who buy any old musical excrement that gets subliminally or otherwise promoted on his money making entertainment programme that has as much to do with creative music as Josef Stalin was to humanitarianism, but is manipulated by his PR henceman Max Clifford and the shows producers to an extent that would have made Joseph Goebbels envious in awe.

After Alexandra Burke; Cheryl Cole; JLS; Leona Lewis; Susan Boyle; X-Factor 12 "Chariddee" record for "Help For Heroes"; Westlife; (and my early pre Final 12 show prediction) Stacey Solomon have dominated the Top 3 for the next three months.

Oh crumbs, how could I make that mistake with BS! I deserve a smack for that...Mind you I don`t take all the blame. Well it was typed out that way on a printed sheet! Chipmunk`s biggest physical so far...and off to check his previous physical positions.

I'm not blaming you, just saying. ;)

Thanks Dave

When was the last time the top two physicals matched the top two sales? :o

Not that long ago, surprisingly! It was Sunday 19th July, when JLS & Cascada were in the #1 & 2 spots.

Very interesting stuff on a Friday night as ever.

I'm very surprised Taio Cruz is nowhere to be seen on pre-album orders.

If anything I would have expected it to be more popular than the Editors who release their third (and according to the majority of reviews I've seen) and worst album to date.

Wow, where have these reviews been?! Anyone who thinks their new album is a weaker effort than their previous one needs their ears testing!!

02 NE THE GIRL WHO KICKED A HORNET`S NEST - STEIG LARSSON

The first 2 books are excellent, this 3rd book was his last before he died, at the time of his death he was writing his fourth book which sadly was never finished, I must admit his books are pretty good, the new one is only available on hardback at the moment, I think I wait for the paperback version it will be far cheaper for me.

As for the charts nothing really screams at me at the moment, its the same music genre at the top, and Alexandra will have the new #1 next week considering the state of the charts, its really sounding pretty samey to me, and I'm tired of it, I can't wait to see the back of 2009 in music terms.

Then there is Danyl Johnson`s number one single too...Yes, come the week of 16th Dec on the Tusday mids...Martin will tell us the bad news!

I'm hoping it be Lucie Jones :D not Pandy Johnson ^_^

Miss FRANK ftw tbh :kink:

I love your posts thisispop. I live in fear of an almost Cowell/X Factor related top 10 album chart come Xmas. :puke2:

Well I've only seen the reviews in:

NME 5/10

Observer Music Monthly 2/5 Stars

Independent 3/5 Stars

music OMH 3/5 Stars

.... hardly glowing endorsements.

Having heard their album on WE7 this week, I've heard enough to know it wont be joining there quite brilliant debut album The Back Room, and their less impressive second album An End Has A Start, as quite frankly they've gone from being a 2nd rate Joy Division tribute act to a 4th rate Cabaret Voltaire tribute act. Personally I think they sound ill suited with their early 1980s new romantic synths meets late Prog Rock (early Marillion) style rock outs that would make Muse fans laugh at them, as Tom Smith's gothic vocals sound cringeworthy over this sonic instrumentation backdrop on this their third album.

Personally, I think it is a near tragic waste of a promising talent that delivered so well on their brilliant debut album. They are one band who definitely should have stuck to four to the floor basic musicianship.
