Well, it might only be a "means to an end" for you, but you cant really just think in terms of yourself mate.. You have colleagues who probably have a lot of years of service...

Oh god, yeah, I forgot, no Waitrose in Dundee..... Bloody backwater.....  Even scabby old Holloway Road in North London has a Waitrose....... :P

Yeah, i was talkin from my pov tho.....

A pay rise would be quite nice given that St Andrews is one of the most expensive Morrison's stores in the country -_-

I say try £5.73 an hour! With inconsistant hours that can be anywhere between 5-10 hours in which I usually earn LESS than someone on the dole!

On the subject someone who works with my mum at Tesco got sacked for stealing the other night and he had been working there for 21 years and you know what he stole? A bloody game! Which wouldn't have cost more than £40 and as well as his job he lost his reputation and the pension he's built up over the years!

He got away lightly, I would have had him arrested and charged with theft, it doesn't matter if he stole a tin of beans theft is theft, if every Tesco employee stole a £40 game think how much lost revenue that would be, the cretin got off lightly if the police weren't involved, would you suggest he should have kept his job one of which his responsibilities is looking out for shoplifters after what he did ? :o

Just for the record it's £6.70 @ Tesco and the staff Benefits are better than all the other "big" supermarkets :P

er, why....? Just because it's St Andrews....? Why should it be more expensive to do your shopping in St Andrews than in Glasgow or Edinburgh....? That doesn't make any sense...

Err, yeah, I have to agree with this 'Wicky mate, sorry.... I can understand an employee taking food that's been taken off shelves because it's on its sell-by date and it's due to get chucked away anyway, but taking a game..?? Nah, there's really no justification for that one....

How long do you have to work for to get staff discount?

It took 3weeks for me to get my card.

Pretty much.

Quite a lot of things are a couple of pence more expensive in St Andrews than Dundee or Glenrothes.

On a £100 shop you could pay like £2-3 more.

It's not uncommon. You'll find that every one of the supermarkets has higher prices in 'more affluent' areas.

Yeah rents are higher so they have to have higher prices, that is why shops in Knightsbridge are more expensive than shops in Lewisham for example, its not greed just higher overheads

Yeah, it's one of the less dubious retail tactics.

Every last one of which Tesco use. They may have the best staff benefits of the big 4, but it doesn't make them any less satanic or greedy. There ain't much they won't do to get more money from you

Well, no, it's partly greed mate.... They may just make a little less profit, but so what...? Aren't they supposed to be about giving the consumer a "good deal"...?

Chain stores like Tescos should ALWAYS charge a flat, same-across-the-board price - it's disgusting they add a few pence on here and there depending on area... what a way to p*** of your customers, who can walk 5 minutes down the road and get the exact same item in the exact same chain for 25p less.

As for this guy's comments on school leavers and education... I'm with him 200%.... the teenagers who come to us for training - their grammar, spelling and ability to use the English language as it should be (I blame my main Room 101 item - txtspk...UGH!!!!), is nothing short of STAGGERING. Even the supposely intelligent ones seem completely unable to compose a sentence correctly.... since when did 'of' replace 'have'? Buzzjack's a prime example - I cringe when I read most of the posts in other areas of this site. And the infuriating Americanisation of the English language, the bast*rdised American version, with 'z's instead of 's's..... it's high time the English language was given a higher priority on the curriculum.

That's not the fault of schools though mate... That's a CULTURAL thing... Our society has been becoming more and more Americanised since the 1980s.... We've picked up ALL of America's bad habits while actually picking up really none of the good things (such as, for example, a WRITTEN Constitution and Bill of Rights, an ELECTED second Chamber of Parliament, oh, and a People's Revolution against an increasingly Oppressive State Machine which grinds us all down into the dirt..... ;) )

What bugs me BIG time is when I'm reading a book, by a British author, printed in the UK.... that uses American/bast*rdised English?!?! And when a movie gets released here - with incorrect spelling, the spelling used for the US market... how bloody RUDE! I've no truck at all with the ruination of our language - colour will ALWAYS have a 'u' in it, recognise will ALWAYS have an 's' in it...and so on. Why are we letting this happen? Shouldn't all this stuff be happening the other way round??

If a Brit movie is released in the States, they ALWAYS amend the spelling of a title, same with a book. Christ, they even DUB and SUBTITLE English movies in the US... whilst letting us struggle with American slang and accents?!! WTF?

As you can tell.... my Room 101 would be bulging  :P

And whilst I semi-agree on the cultural impact of rancid things like hip-hop (which I blame for many things - gun culture, knife culture, gangs, te belittling of women in society, homophobia... because rap/hip-hop, or the majority of it, makes these things look 'cool' and 'ok') etc.... it's up to schools to teach the RIGHT way....and they don't seem to be doing a very good job of it at the moment.

I shall leave you to ponder the irony of that boldened part mate.....

I broadly agree, I dont even listen to Rap anymore, whereas I certainly had respect for the likes of Public Enemy, De La Soul, Ice T, NWA and others back in the day... Rage Against the Machine's Zach De La Rocha has done some very interesting Rap/Hip Hop stuff solo, VERY politicised.....

I dont know what you really expect schools to do tbh.. They've really got their hands tied by this relentless march of the Mass Media, the Internet, etc, how on Earth can teachers possibly combat this...? Also the fact that the excesses of some far too "liberal" thinking where the disciplining of children are concerned... I've said this before and I'll say it again... CHILDREN SHOULD NOT HAVE THE SAME RIGHTS AS ADULTS.... They lack the psychological or intellectual capacity to be able to process these things, because they dont understand that with rights comes responsibility, and the fact that raging teen hormones completely cloud their judgement... Children do not understand the concept of ego or superego, they're all about the Id, ie, seeking their own pleasure without any regards to the wider consequences... It's only through Socialisation that children actually understand there is more to the world than themselves... The Western mainstream Mass Media does not teach Socialisation or social skills, it merely teaches them how to be mindless consumers ...

This, I feel, is the whole problem.... When "Nu Labor" came into power, they stood on a platform of "EDUCATION! EDUCATION! EDUCATION". What an abolutely bad joke that turned out to be......

No way in HELL should we be teaching the likes of "Harry Potter" in schools... We should be teaching, if anything from that genre, "Lord of the Rings", or better yet, stuff like "Farenheit 451", "A Clockwork Orange", "Hitch-Hikers Guide to the Galaxy" or "Catch 22", far, FAR better literature than JK Rowling's borderline plagiarised, unoriginal cr@p...

I got taught JD Salinger's "Catcher in the Rye", Huxley's "Brave New World" and Orwell's "1984" when I was a teenager... And I understood what each book was saying to me PERFECTLY WELL..... So, to try and imply that teens dont have the potential mental capacity to absorb these texts is absolutely erroneous in the extreme, I wasn't a perfect "A" pupil by any means.....

I shall leave you to ponder the irony of that boldened part mate.....

you beat me too it! you know the huge problem i have with that word!

but i agree with russ.....
