The question is: who will get the excellence award? Last year was Pet Shop Boys, isn't it? Who is still big in the music (aka: you-was-big-and-made-great-music-but now-your-time-is-over-so-please-retire  ) and didn't receive it?

I won't put my money on Depeche Mode, as much as i want that they will get a little recognition in UK :D

Robbie Williams will receive the 'Outstanding Contribution to Music' prize at next year's Brit Awards, it has been announced.

The singer, who has won more Brits than any other artist, will mark the honour with a performance at the event, which takes place at London's Earls Court on February 16.

Ged Doherty, Brits committee chairman, said: "Robbie is one of the outstanding artists and performers of his generation. It will be an absolute thrill to have him at the Brits 30th anniversary show receiving the 'Outstanding Contribution' award. We are delighted."

Previous recipients of the award include Sir Paul McCartney, David Bowie and last year's winners Pet Shop Boys.

Williams has sold more than 55 million albums since embarking on a solo career in 1995. He has collected 11 previous Brits as a solo artist, as well as four as a member of Take That.

He releases Reality Killed The Video Star, his eighth studio album, on November 9. His latest single 'Bodies' is currently at number two on the UK singles chart.

He forgot to mention The Spice Girls got this award too! Girl Power and all that!

This is going to p*** so many people off

I am delighted obviously. More great news, the other being 'Bodies' is now #1 on the European Charts (also the 2nd biggest song Worldwide). It makes sence for them to give it to him on the 30th Anniversary as he has won more than anyone (whether people like it or not). There is no denying he has had a big impact on British Music in the past 13 years. He has sold more albums in the UK than any British solo artist in history (only act ever to have six albums sell over 2m copies), holds the record for the biggest concerts in UK history and is the best seller of the decade so far by quite a margin. I wonder though if he will also be nominated for other awards. When is the deadline for album of the year?

I think he may just make the deadline - so he's probably got Best Album in the bag too. Not sure if he'll be nominated in best british male category now though, that he's got this 'contribution' thingy! He may just snatch a nomination in the best british female and british band categories though! Bad, bad, bad news for Take That fans though ... no way are Take That AND Robbie going to win awards at the same show. I'm just keeping my fingers crossed now that they DON'T get nominated. I'd rather that than them be nominated and win nowt.

In all honesty - although I can't stand the gormless lying git (stage fright my arse!) ... he obviously deserves it.

 Not sure about Best Female, but I think Best British Breakthrough Act is a given ^_^

Why can't Rob and TT both win awards? Now they get on so well, I am sure the BRIT committe will want to join in the love. Who knows, both our worst nightmares might come true, and TT might join him during the live performance :P

Regarding the stage fright, according to Rob he wasnt even aware the gig was being broadcast to 250 cinemas in 23 countries until after the gig. So either that is a load of crap or the stage fright is true and his management didnt tell him so there would not be more pressure. Imagine breaking a Guinness World Record and not even being aware. Even I agree, that one is hard to believe ;)

Nice to see, even though you dislike him, you admit he deserves it. He is very young to get it but he has achieved so much in a short space of time that it was kind of an obvious choice for the anniversary. There are not that many big names left for it anyway, I suspect quite a few have rejected it  TT will prob get it next year mind you, or maybe they will wait for the 20th Anniversary of their first album?

I don't think Take That will EVER get an award that is decided upon by the Brits Panel. They've only ever won public-voted awards. They're just not taken seriously enough by the Panel ... not like The Spice Girls.

Rob did actually know that the gig was being broadcast simultaneously by the way.

I just hope the Brits don't do something truly vomit-inducing and ask Take That to present Rob with his award. Unfortunately ... I think they will.

On a serious note Scotty - do you honestly buy the 'best buddies' bit - from either camp? Call me cynical .... but I don't believe a word of it. I'm sure Rob's platitudes to them (and Gary) were well scripted. And as for the tattoo! What a load of old tosh.

I'd like to see 3.0/The Sugafakes get nominated for somethin. they get no where near the amount of recognition they deserve.

Nah, I am sure TT will get it within the next few years. I mean, they cant exactly give it to the Spice Girls and then look down on TT. Surely TT have won awards that were not based on public vote in the past?

I hope your right, and they dont ask TT to present it, although I wouldnt be suprised either. I dont know who would present it though, maybe Ant & Dec :teresa:

Tbh, I dont know what to make of the whole friendship. It is hard to know. If they were as close as it is made out, would at least one member of TT not have been at the gig on Tuesday? It could just be for good PR, I am not sure. I think he is good mates with Mark, but I do find it hard to believe with Gary, but they have both got older so who knows?

Well Gary had a reason for not being there ... although I'm sure most people will see the ills of the world as Gary's fault and he was snubbing Rob. I'm pretty sure Howard still can't stand Rob. Jason ... not too sure about but he seems a 'live and let live' sort of person. I'm very surprised that Mark wasn't there though.

Anyway ... I just hope Rob gets all of his confidence back and when he receives his award - whoever presents it ... he can say once again with pride 'I was always the talented one ...'

An utter disgrace that Robbie's getting Outstanding Contribution...and, in a year dominated by young Black male artists, I bet he gets Best Male too...

In 1989 the organisers of the Brit Awards erred spectacularly by pairing Fleetwood Mac drummer Mick Fleetwood, fresh from a brief appearance in Schwarzeneggar flick 'The Running Man', with diminutive "Jordan-minus-the-publicist" glamour model and pop puppet Samantha Fox. The duo fluffed lines, missed cues and introduced acts in the wrong order, culminating in Boy George's famous appearance as "The Four Tops".

In 1992, The KLF spectacularly announced their retirement from the music business by playing a thrash-metal version of their no.1 hit '3 Am Eternal' with Extreme Noise Terror, firing blanks into the audience from a vintage machine gun and dumping a dead sheep at the after party with a note tagged to it reading "I died for ewe...bon appetit!" Bill Drummond of the group has since said he was very upset their performance led to esteemed conductor Sir Georg Solti walking out.

In 1996, Jarvis Cocker invaded Michael Jackson's horrific, misguided self-ordination ceremony (a cavalcade of messianic delusion) and waggled his bottom in a clip which, thanks to Youtube reaching the USA, sees Cocker demonised more now by lunatic Jackolytes than it ever was at the time.

However, in 2000 the Brits most shameful incident occurred when the panel awarded the Spice Girls with the Outstanding Contribution (AKA Lifetime Achievement) Award for little more than roughly stapling champagne feminism to an unwanted manufactured pop bandwagon. In three and a half years (admittedly a quarter century in dog years) five, and latterly four, mediocre singers and dancers - the equivalent of letting a hen party take over the local karaoke bar - joined an elite including Elton John, Queen, Cliff Richard, Fleetwood Mac, Van Morrison, The Who and The Beatles.

Now, in 2010, the panel are ready to disgrace themselves once again, this time honouring one Robert Peter Williams for his "oustanding contribution" or, in real terms, for 'Angels' and that one album everyone liked from over a decade ago.

Williams already holds eleven Brit gongs (not including another four from his time with Take That) - a record - but the fact must stand that most of Robbie's awards were public voted which is far more a reflection of teen trends than musical appreciation. You only need to look at the "British Breakthrough Act" winners over the years which were won by such flash-in-the-pan acts as S Club 7, A1 and Blue for evidence of this. Keen to be seen as "down to earth", pop stars are usually quick to defend, nay emphasise, the importance of these awards as they're "voted for by the fans" - their fans mainly. Let's face it, the relationship between fanbase and tabloid column inches has long been unsettlingly close.

Thus the Brit Awards must once again hold up their hands and admit their existence is to celebrate the sale of music, the continuation of this dinosaur-shaped industry, the importance of the star over substance and nothing, nothing to do with musical quality. Remember, this is a ceremony historically so out of touch that it gave Nirvana "Best International Breakthrough" in 1993 and Bjork the same award in 1994, despite both acts having enjoyed mass popularity outside of the charts for some years previously.

That Bjork was given a nod at all is a surprise giving her long-term affiliation to the independent label One Little Indian. It's perhaps a similar affiliation towards Mute from Depeche Mode (or Erasure come to think of it) and Factory (for the most part) from New Order that has seen these pioneering and perennially popular acts snubbed year on year.

That Williams has attained a twelfth Brit Award, and this time with no help from the phone lines, in a career peppered with mediocre albums is a travesty. What makes it harder to swallow is that, with a new album out and a "brave" return to live performances, he will probably also be installed as odds-on favourite to pick up Best British Male, a historically pro-White category, in the year when Dizzee Rascal, Tinchy Stryder and Taio Cruz have dominated the charts.

I'm very surprised that Mark wasn't there though.

Norma

Mark was in that evening at the premiere of "The rise and fall of little voice" as he wrote a song for it.

LOL at Mr. Williams winning the award  .

Having seen Gary and Robbie in the same random public house/restaurant in the outskirts of Wiltshire one Friday late lunchtime (I could name the pub, the date and the time but it was clearly a private social get together so I'd rather respect their privacy even six months after the event), I think both you and Scotty are wrong. I also literally work with a friend who is a good friend of Robbie's best mate's wife.

;)

As for the BRIT Award I'm very disappointed they could not hold things off until giving this award to both acts in Feb 2012 in the aftermath of a late 2011 release date of the 6th Take That studio album (the 4th as a 5 piece). :kink:

As for the outstanding Contribution/Lifetime Achievement Award winners there have been more undeserving winners IMHO than the Robster:

So far this award has been won by The Beatles, John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Martin, The Police, Wham!, Elton John, Eric Clapton, The Who, Cliff Richard, Queen, Status Quo, Freddie Mercury, Rod Stewart, Van Morrison, David Bowie, Bee Gees, Fleetwood Mac, Eurythmics, Spice Girls, U2, Sting, Tom Jones, Duran Duran, Bob Geldof, Paul Weller, Oasis, Pet Shop Boys.

So off the top of my head the likes of the Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Ray Davies/the Kinks, Bryan Ferry/Roxy Music, John Lydon, Kate Bush, Madness, Genesis/Phil Collins/Peter Gabriel, Joy Division/New Order, Iron Maiden, The Cure, Depeche Mode, Yazoo (Alison Moyet later solo & Vince Clarke - later Erasure), The Smiths (Morrissey/Johnny Marr), Damon Albarn/Blur, etc have never won this award.

Which makes some of those winners shocking really.

I think it's mistake for Robbie to get this award so early on, there's so many more deserving long-running acts who should get it first. Kate Bush? David Bowie? Depeche Mode? Morrissey?

Shocked that Rolling Stones didn't won it till now :( I hope they will get it and refuse it  (they are big enough to afford it!).

No surprise about Genesis and Depeche Mode. I think they are much popular outside UK.

So, Take That will be in a good company of those-bands-the-brit-awards-comitte-didn't-liked   , as i don't see them ever receiving it.

I obviously dont agree. :P Rob and TT are totally seperate acts, and they should not be lumped in together for this award.TT have had huge success in the UK since their comeback and Rob's solo success in the past 13 years has been nothing short of phenomenal. His sales and enormous touring success all over the world (outside America) mean he should get this award for those amazing achievments. It would be totally different if he was Ronan Keating or Brian McFadden

Also, havent quite a few of those big acts on the list refused the award?
