Cheryl Cole goes to #1 as Fight For This Love becomes the fastest seller of the year!

Cheryl Cole is a member of an obscure girl group called Girls Aloud and is also a judge on some TV talent show apparently called The X-Factor! Last week it was the turn of Cheryl Cole to make a memorable performance her new single Fight For This Love on the aforementioned TV show. Following Alexandra Burke last week this has translated into huge sales, and the fastest seller of the year so far. Having bigger first week sales than any Girls Aloud song and outselling total sales of most in just 1 week, I think this can be considered a success. Fight For This Love tops the charts a full year after Girls Aloud reached the summit with The Promise and provides Mrs Cole with her 4th #1 single.

Whitney Houston - Million Dollar Bill climbs to #5

The first 4 live acts to perform on X-Factor are all in this week’s top 5, as Alexandra drops to #2 (still selling well) and Robbie drops to #4. Whitney Houston performed Million Dollar Bill on the show last week whilst her dress almost came undone. As a result of this and her album release, the track rises to #5 after a 12-14 drop last week. Whitney also enters just outside the 40 with album track I Didn’t Know My Own Strength.

Young Soul Rebels - I Got Soul enters at #10

There is a new entry at #10 this week from a War Child charity supergroup called Young Soul Rebels. The group consists of Pixie Lott, N-Dubz, Tinchy Stryder, Frankmusik, VV Brown, Chipmunk, MPHO, Ironik and the London Community Gospel Choir amongst others. The track is based around the tagline “I got soul, but I’m not a soldier” and melody from The Killers hit All These Things That I’ve Done, making #18 in 2005.

Black Eyed Peas - Meet Me Halfway climbs to #11

The Black Eyed Peas once again rise quickly up the charts, this week Meet Me Halfway surges 26-11 and is showing signs of becoming another massive top 5 hit in the next few weeks.

Cobra Starship - Good Girls Go Bad enters at #17

American punk-pop outfit Cobra Starship get a new entry this week at #17 as all the Good Girls Go Bad. Maybe they are referring to Rihanna as her last album was called Good Girl Gone Bad … there again probably not! After several US releases, this is the group’s first UK release and debuts at #11, featuring Gossip Girl actress Leighton Meester on backing vocals.

Alphabeat - The Spell enters at #20

Danish pop act Alphabeat get another hit this week as they cast their spell on the top 20. The Spell is the first from their forthcoming second album. It seems that their spell hasn’t really worked as they enter rather at a rather lowly #20 this week. Debut hit Fascination remains their biggest, reaching #6 last year.

Foo Fighters - Wheels enters at #22

Foo Fighters were originally formed in 1995 by former Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl who have since become hugely popular. They have had 6 studio albums to date and scored 4 top 10 hit singles, biggest being 2005’s #4 hit Best Of You. So now is the time for them to release a Greatest Hits album, Wheels is a new song from it. Whilst getting the band their 20th top 40 hit in at #22, it has somewhat underperformed as so often happens with new tracks from best of / hits compilations.

Christina Auguilera - Hurt re-enters at #25

The X-Factor effect on older hits comes into play once more this week as Christina Aguilera’s ballad Hurt was performed on the show and now makes a return to the top 40 at #25. It originally made #11.

Calvin Harris - Flash Back enters at #30

Dumfries born Calvin Harris this week scores a 6th top 40 hit this week as he experiences a Flash Back. This is the 3rd single release from his chart topping second album, following up #1 single I’m Not Alone and #3 single Ready For The Weekend. Whether this one will emulate that success remains to be seen.

Paolo Nutini - Pencil Full Of Lead enters at #33

Scottish singer songwriter Paolo Nutini returns to the top 40 with a Pencil Full Of Lead, very different style almost bordering on jazz at times. This is his 6th top 40 hit out of 7 releases with only his last single Coming Up Easy missing the top 40, the biggest was his 2006 #5 debut where he made his Last Request.

This week’s near misses

Missing out this week once again is alternative band Miike Snow (yes the spelling is correct) with Black & Blue. Green Day released their latest single Eat Jesus Nowhere and are nowhere near the top 40 this week. The Twang’s new single is called Encouraging Sign, unfortunately proves not to be chart-wise.

Alexandra Burke tops the album charts heading a mass of new entries

Topping a very busy album chart this week is the aforementioned Alexandra Burke to the surprise of few, she is Overcome! Alex follows on from previous X-Factor winners Steve Brookstein, Shane Ward and Leona Lewis, whose respective debut albums also went to #1. In second place this week is the 4th successive top 10 album for Canadian singer Michael Buble, who has also been on a certain TV Talent show! Entering at #3 this week is the 6th studio album from Whitney Houston and her 5th to reach the top 5, she has also had several compilations and soundtracks (biggest being The Bodyguard OST). US “song and dance man” Seasick Steve enters at #4 as his new album Man From Another Time becomes his biggest yet. Entering at #7 is Once More, a new album featuring reworks of older hits from the reformed Spandau Ballet. Also entering the top 20 are hits compilations from Fleetwood Mac at a new peak of #6, and another from Alison Moyet in at #17 ... it is that time of year right enough!

Personal opinionisation of Mr Bond!

I am very happy to see Cheryl get her first solo #1 with Fight For This Love, when I first heard the song I was rather underwhelmed but now love it. I quite like Million Dollar Bill even if it is not a patch on most of Whitney’s past classics. Whilst I don’t normally like that sort of thing, I really like Good Girls Go Bad by Cobra Starship and think it should’ve gone top 10. I don’t care much for Alphabeat or the Foo Fighters, never liked either act and I don’t like their respective new songs. A very different style, I’m beginning to quite like Paolo’s new one Pencil Full Of Lead. I have listened to Alexandra’s album but think a lot of the songs are catchy but a bit samey, I am of the same opinion about Mr Hudson’s album too.

Next week’s contenders

Big new releases are due next week from Westlife (X-Factor performance), Jay Sean, Miley Cyrus and Biffy Clyro as well as the physical release of Pitbull’s track and several others. New albums are due from Cheryl Cole, Michael Jackson, Daniel O’Donnell and others next week.

This is Cheryl's 5th #1 - this one and 4 with Girls Aloud.

Ah yes I forgot to count Walk This Way (with Sugababes) for some reason.

Yeh a rubbish song in my opinion ... only redeeming thing it is was for charity.
