Posted November 1, 200915 yr And with 2009 swiftly drawing to a close, the inevitable reviews of the decade begin... ...so it makes sense to start from the beginning! I will periodically release a review of each year, culminating in December with a list of the 100 songs that summarised the decade! So, let us begin with the 26 songs which defined 2000 (Spotify playlist alert!)... 01. Kelis - Caught Out There 02. Samantha Mumba - Always Come Back To Your Love 03. Eminem; Dido - Stan 04. Melanie C - I Turn To You (Hex Hector Radio Mix) 05. Outkast - B.O.B. (Bombs Over Baghdad) 06. Samantha Mumba - Gotta Tell You 07. Melanie C; Lisa 'Left Eye' Lopes - Never Be The Same Again 08. Britney Spears - Born To Make You Happy 09. Fragma - Toca's Miracle 10. All Saints - Pure Shores 11. Britney Spears - Stronger 12. Kylie Minogue - Your Disco Needs You 13. Radiohead - Idioteque 14. S Club 7 - Never Had A Dream Come True 15. Britney Spears - Lucky 16. Sonique - It Feels So Good 17. Peaches - Fuck The Pain Away 18. Sugababes - Overload 19. Billie Piper - Day & Night 20. Pet Shop Boys - You Only Tell Me You Love Me When You're Drunk 21. Moby - Porcelain 22. LeAnn Rimes - Can't Fight The Moonlight (SPOTIFY, WHY ARE YOU MISSING #1s FROM YOUR CATALOGUE? Get to it thx.) 23. Britney Spears - Oops...I Did It Again 24. Kylie Minogue - Spinning Around 25. Eminem - The Real Slim Shady 26. Destiny's Child - Indepedent Women Part I Mmm, I know. 2000 really hasn't aged well, has it? In fact, I'd almost go as far as saying that these songs are the few from that year that still remain listenable on their own merits...and even then, the bottom few are pushing it a bit. Nonetheless, despite its shortcomings it did manage to provide us with some classics. Case in point at number 5 with the jungle-hip hop-gospel-funk-rock-soul genre-fuck that was Outkast's Bombs Over Baghdad, a relentless sprint of a track which was shamelessly ignored at the time (and only resurrected in 2003 a la Born In The USA for completely misguided reasons). While I can't help but think Pitchfork are being a tad over the top in their placing of the track as the greatest the decade has to offer, Bombs Over Baghdad certainly does stand as testament to the genius of Outkast at their very best. Kelis' Caught Out There however is definitely my favourite track of 2000. A feisty call to arms to women who've 'been lied to by their men', with an appropriately disturbing backing track which conjures up images of that point just before a complete breakdown, filled with a laundry list of Kelis' man's wrong-doings and a series of biting put-downs, all of which culminate in THAT chorus, a psychotic rail against her (presumably now ex-) boyfriend, which has a peculiar power in its basal simplicity. Why go on a tangent when you really can't add all that much to 'I HATE YOU SO MUCH RIGHT NOW'? Insane perfection from one of THE best artists of the decade. Still, other than that those 26, what a pathetic year. Srsly, two number ones for A1 and three for Westlife? Get out.
November 1, 200915 yr It'd probably be best if I didn't comment much on 2000. 'Stan' and 'B.O.B.' are good....
November 1, 200915 yr no Absolutely Everybody? truly disappointing :( great to see Your Disco Needs You though
November 1, 200915 yr AS IF "I Turn To You" is better than "Never Be The Same Again". The latter is like the best Spice Girl related song ever. Sugababes and Destiny's Child are also favourites of mine from this. I really dislike that Kelis song too, she scared me so much. I think that might have been one of the factors to put me off the charts until Leona brought me back with "Bleeding Love".
November 1, 200915 yr I agree, I've always massively hated Caught Out There, it's so aggressive :puke:
November 1, 200915 yr Author It'd probably be best if I didn't comment much on 2000. 'Stan' and 'B.O.B.' are good.... It was such an awful year tbh :( I've had to resort to the pop that still sounds alright...Kelis, while amazing, would definitely not have come out as my favourite in any other year, and would've been lucky to come top ten in most! And the aggression MAKES COT Rich! I consider Crazy Possessive to be the female-directed sequel to Caught Out There
November 11, 200915 yr A decent-ish chart.. No Aaliyah 'Try Again' though :( and probably others I lovee too. YAY @ Day & Night being in there, such an epic song! <3
