The X Factor is delivering another big sales week at the top end of the UK singles chart, with the 2009 finalists set to debut at number one as former winner Leona Lewis leads the albums market.

The finalists’ Syco-issued cover of the Michael Jackson hit You Are Not Alone surpassed 80,000 sales by the end of business yesterday, according to retail reports, and this Sunday should become the fifth consecutive number one single to have reached the top following exposure on the ITV1 programme.

The X Factor’s current domination of the UK’s main sales charts is also continuing in the albums sector where Syco’s Leona Lewis is likely to make up for the disappointment of losing out on topping the singles countdown last weekend with Happy by her second album Echo debuting at the top.

Echo has opened up a lead of around 13,000 sales ahead of 2008 X Factor runners-up JLS, whose self-titled debut Epic album scored a narrow victory over Robbie Williams to enter at one last Sunday. Williams’ Virgin album Reality Killed The Radio Star is the week’s third top seller so far.

Lewis’ album will be joined in the Top 10 by up to five other brand new albums. A new Queen compilation, the Parlophone-issued Absolute Greatest, and AATW/UMTV act N-Dubz’ Against All Odds, are the week’s fourth and fifth top sellers at this stage of the week, while other new albums vying for Top 10 places are the self-titled debut from the Columbia-handled Them Crooked Vultures, V2/Mercury’s Stereophonics with Keep Calm And Carry On and RCA act Will Young’s first retrospective, The Hits.

Lower down, other new albums set to chart will include Interscope/Polydor signing 50 Cent’s Before U Self Destruct and new sets from Columbia’s John Mayer, Polydor’s Ronan Keating and Parlophone’s Norah Jones.

On the singles chart Interscope/Polydor’s Black Eyed Peas’ Meet Me Halfway, which climbed to one last Sunday, is putting up the strongest challenge to the X Factor Finalists 2009, while Warner act Jason Derulo will follow topping the Billboard Hot 100 by scoring a high new entry in the UK with Whatcha Say.

Bad Romance is poised to climb a few places to give Interscope/Polydor’s Lady GaGa her fourth Top 10 single this year, while new entries in the chart will include Asylum/Atlantic’s Alesha Dixon with To Love Again.

Leona Lewis on course for album top spot

Tuesday, November 17 2009, 10:06 GMT

By David Balls, Music Reporter

Leona Lewis is on course to top the charts with her second album Echo on Sunday.

According to midweek sales figures, the 'Happy' singer shifted over 50,000 units of the record on its first day of release.

JLS's self-titled debut has been pushed to second place and is currently 6,000 copies ahead of Robbie Williams's Reality Killed The Video Star.

Meanwhile, Camden trio N-Dubz are expected to reach the top five for the first time with second album Against All Odds.

How does that compare with first day sales for Alex, Cheryl & JLS.

Higher than Alex's and Cheryl's and lower than JLS's.

Quite low sales for Leona if that's true. :(

I hope that figure's too general to be exactly right--I'd like a few ten thousand more.

Correct me if wrong but

Cheryl - 31.7k

Alexandra - 41.2k

JLS - 79.5k

I've not got update yet so cant confirm anything :drama:

WOW! Go Leona!

Im dying to see it now. :D :D :D

You're right :)

Now where the hell is that bloody update? :P

God knows. Today of all days :(

I wonder where DS got the unusually fast info!

Thats really low for Leona! Asda have it for £6 so i thought it would have sold nearer to 100,000 on its first day.

Would like to see Alesha in the top 10 but will probably be top 15. And I hope Lady Gaga and Robbie are in the top 10. and Cheryl still holding onto a top 5 place would be nice

Music Week confirmation in albums:-

Leona #1

JLS #2

Robbie #3

Queen Greatest Hits #4

NDubz #5

I love how generally good sales are considered bad for Leona. Its like everyone expects millions of sales for her every week.
