Time for the Flashback to...December 1981

The Top TV back then: Note viewing figures for the last 5 months of 1981, are scarce because many were not kept

Top ITV Programmes

01 CORONATION STREET (MON) 17m

02 CORONATION STEET (WEDS) 16.70m

03 PLAY YOUR CARDS RIGHT (FRI)...Bruce Forsyth and those dodgy cards & dolly dealers in Series 2

04 THIS IS YOUR LIFE (Weds) 16m...the late Eamonn Andrews and the original big red book

05 LONDON NIGHT OUT (Weds)...Tom O`Conner hosts the show (formerly Wednesday At 8), featuring comedy/music & Name That Tune

06 PUNCHLINES (SAT)...the late Lennie Bennett hosts the game, where celebrities have to supply the correct punchlines as answers to contestants

07 GAME FOR A LAUGH (SAT)...the late Jeremy Beadle, Sarah Kennedy/Matthew Kelly/Henry Kelly. Surprisingly the show that took the Generation Games viewers away was actually going to appear on the BBC, but they rejected it after the pilot that was introduced by Paul Daniels/Pamela Stephenson/David Copperfield (he of Three Of A Kind fame). The BBC called it "Gotcha"...sounds to Noel Edmonds! Very strange, when Jimmy Tarbuck turned down "The Generation Game" in 1982, that Noel Edmonds began his Saturday night reign as host of ill-fated "The Late Late Breakfast Show". With some of it similar to the original idea of "Game For A Laugh".

08 CROSSROADS (MON) 13.5m

09 BULLSEYE (MON)...Jim Bowen at ATV in Series 1

10 GIVE US A CLUE (THURS)...Michael Aspel presents the charade based game, with Team Captains Una Stubbs & Lionel Blair

05 PAUL DANIELS MAGIC SHOW (Sat)...Paul pops up, and pulls Debbie McGee from an empty cupboard

I probably think that the physical chart is much better this time of year, because we don`t end up with those same old Xmas songs cluttering up the chart. Why do people download the same Christmas songs every damn year? Where are the likes of Dana/Showaddywaddy/Gilbert O`Sullivan etc. That was the kind of stuff we listened too. I mean you only have to switch on the radio to hear Mariah/Wizzard/Slade/Pogues...4 songs I personally detest! "I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday" is probably the worst, and just a remake of their previous hit "Angel Fingers". Anyway outside the Physical top 20 lurks Ian Brown/Taio Cruz/Timbaland/30 Seconds To Mars/50 Cent. What a shame Ian missed out.

42 LONELY PUP (IN A CHRISTMAS SHOP) - ADAM FAITH 1960 135,000

41 HAVE YOURSELF A MERRY LITTLE CHRISTMAS - KATIE MELUA (Double A Side) 2007

Continuing next week with 40-21. Note: Some figures are not exactly correct on some points, so I haven`t included them. For instance some people suggest that Kate Bush sold 75,000 in 1980 with "December Will Be Magic Again". If that is true, then the Barron Knights would have sold much more with "Never Mind The Presents". So, we are working on it!

Thanks Dave! I know you say the figures are too close to give, but do you think Rihanna will be number 1 by Sunday?

In a 3 words...I hope Not! ;) But we don`t include the dvd sales in our chart. So, Peter has sold much less for us.

I would have thought New Year - Sugababes would have counted in your Christmas song chart, as it mentions Christmas in the song and is quite a Christmassy song. It's sold 84,170.

I love the retro Human League - Don't You Want Me, all time favourite Xmas #1 single, shame they don't make good music like that no more. Excellent tracks by The Police, Ultravox, Soft Cell, Kim Wilde

And for those members that don't remember The Tweets here is the Birdie Song.

Don't forget to do the dance moves :heehee:

It may mention Christmas (Last Year you went away at Christmas), but it`s hardly Christmas really. I mean if you include that, then we could include such songs as Kiss Me & Stephen Tin Tin Duffy because it mentions "Callers like it was Christmas Eve". It has to have a Christmas connection in the title really, and Sugababes would be New Year with this title, as in "This Perfect Year" along with Dina Carroll etc.

It certainly does get difficult to compile though because like you say, you have to determine what really is Christmas or not. We don`t include East 17/Frankie Goes To Hollywood or stuff like that either as they cash inon Chrismas with snow & Nativity scenes etc, but don`t mention Christmas anywhere. It also is hard to go under #60 in the list because figures of sales are half cut, and questionable. I question earlier that Kate Bush sold 75,000 and also questioned the fact it wasn`t exactly Christmas either...It`s December based, with a line "Saint Nicholas down the chimney" but not all the way Christmas.

A much better video for the Birdie Song.....
