December 14, 200915 yr I read here somewhere if this keeps on going in 10 years all music will be that same churned out rubbish, in fact, I said this 10 years ago (1999), it's already here, and it's on a wider spectrum than X Factor, its basically all mind numbing recycled over samped trash. To be decent and relevant music really needs to get back to basics of real bands that can qualify to be good, that can actually play. and forget the karaoke singers and instrumentals behind them. Stop whinging about this stuff, if you truly hate it, then go out there and make it happen cause we're still gonna have the likes of this by 2020 and by then the likes of the classic rock bands will be forgotten. *************** Start NOW forget the wii's and the x boxes and give the kids a guitar, a drum kit, a keyboard anything that will spark the imagination a lot more
December 14, 200915 yr Yet you are actively support an act (The Muppets) released on the Walt Disney Record label. The same label that also provides Hannah Montana aka Miley Cyrus who is most famous for the song ........ The Climb. Yes the same Walt Disney who was a homophobe and a key Hollywood player in the McCarthy anti-Commie witchhunts of the 1950s. How subversive. To be fair, though, Disney are now known as one of the most gay-friendly employers in the US.
December 14, 200915 yr Something more Christmassy would be more apt than RATM, but I'm happy if it gets the #1 (which it won't) People shouldn't be so defensive about the X-Factor, etc. The show itself IS good, and produces good singers (though never good first singles for the winners - Shayne's, Leona's and Leon's being crap, Alexandra's being the best and her version of Hallelujah isn't brilliant, just OK). What's a pile of crap is that it's practically guaranteed the #1 Christmas (and New Year) single spot. The only way the X-Factor winner wouldn't get the Xmas #1 is if a massive charity single was out - like Band Aid 20 and I'm not even sure if that would stop the winner nowadays, X-Factor seems a hell of a lot more popular than it did five years ago. Simon Cowell associated acts being practically guaranteed success is no more cynical or depressing than any big marketing machine driving a new act into the market, then ruthlessly dropping them. Think of the many boy- and girl-groups in the late 90s/early 00s who had a hit or two the were dropped. Hell, even go as far back as the Monkees for manufactured acts with 'instant' success. The major problem I have with the winners is that the show doesn't seem to try hard enough. Each and every year they produce a lukewarm ballad, inferior to the original version if it's a cover. (Not sure if Shayne's was a cover but it was awful anyway) 'Hallelujah' is a brilliant song, yet Alexandra's, though quite good, wasn't the best version in the charts last Christmas. Now we have a cover of an alright song which, in my opinion, is just another lukewarm ballad. Joe seems like a nice guy but he won't have a major mainstream pop career for long if his team give him songs like 'The Climb' all the time. Simon, Louis, and whoever else runs the show obviously have contacts with great songwriters. Diane Warren? Xenomania? Cathy Dennis? If they have acts like George Michael and Macca performing it surely can't be too hard to get great stars to write the bloody winning song! How hard would it be to craft an original, possibly up- or at least mid-tempo, or even Christmassy song? If the winner's song is picked long before the final, to make it fair, etc, then they could stop being so f***ing complacent! Does Simon actually enjoy listening to the music that the winners produce? If the argument is that it would take too long to do, or that it may not suit the winner's voice, then: produce more than one new song. Not hard! You've got a whole year! Additionally: $h!t videos! If you watch the show, you've seen their original audition and the 'journey' to the final loads of times, if not, there's Youtube! Make a half decent video even if it's a bit cliched, not simple standing interspersed with old footage!!! I think you'll agree with next Sunday's commentary :P
December 14, 200915 yr To be fair, though, Disney are now known as one of the most gay-friendly employers in the US. ...And, well, Walt Disney is kinda DEAD these days as well, so, I rather think Rich's point is totally moot......
December 14, 200915 yr Yet you are actively support an act (The Muppets) released on the Walt Disney Record label. The Muppets are the creation of Jim Henson and Frank Oz, two old Hippies.... :P Their creation has fukk all to do with sodding Disney anyway..... Henson had no say in Disney buying his creation, he was kind of DEAD by then.... <_< Yet again you talk bollocks mate....
December 14, 200915 yr X-Factor average 15.5 mln and it dropped slightly to 16.8 million after McElderry was finally declared the winner. .
December 14, 200915 yr If Joe sells poorly, and say does a Leon selling about 250k, and RATM sell very well, who knows they could get to no.1. But its a BIG If!
December 14, 200915 yr Here is a Statement - from The OCC - about the 29p Downloads from Amazon:, The Official Singles Chart Rules do not specify a minimum retail selling price for the sale of a single to be eligible for inclusion in the Official Singles Chart, however they do specify a minimum published dealer price. This does not affect the ability of a retailer to carry out price promotions and any genuine consumer purchases made as a result of a retailer promotion will be eligible as long as the single meets all other applicable chart rules. In plain English - RAGTM & Joe 'The Climb' Downloads from Amazon.uk DO count. I know someone at The OCC, & he's just re-confirmed it to me. Basically - Dealers have to pay a minimum of 40p, but they can sell the Downloads as cheaply as they like - such as 29p. The OCC still count them.
December 14, 200915 yr I think this campain could've worked if a more Xmas kinda song was chosen instead.
December 14, 200915 yr I think this campain could've worked if a more Xmas kinda song was chosen instead. Personally, I'd've loved it if Rage had written a special Christmas song.... No, seriously... Zach could launch into an almighty rant about the Consumerism, the way that "Christmas" has been appropriated by the Christian Fascists away from its Pagan origins, etc, etc.... And not only that, they could've just distributed it themselves from their website... Donating ALL proceeds to charity and not just the cut that they get from sales of KITNO, while greedy ole Scrooge Sony keeps theirs.... BAH HUMBUG indeed.....
December 14, 200915 yr Author 2) ... but it will push down every other deserving song! How unfair! I think KITN is a deserving song, regardless of release date, infact far more deserving than what lady gaga and beyonce who both have singles this week. I think this campain could've worked if a more Xmas kinda song was chosen instead. how many times does one have to say why it was KITN chosen for this campaign.
December 14, 200915 yr Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't this single download only? Surely the physical sales of the X-Factor song are likely to be massive (parents buying as Xmas presents, etc) and therefore will easily exceed RATM download only figures? Either way, I'll be interesting to see the first set of figures tomorrow.

Either way, I'll be interesting to see the first set of figures tomorrow. Yes, the physical sales will almost certainly give Joe a huge lead, much as I wish it not so. However, they won't be included in the mids until Thu/Fri depending on when the physical becomes available. Tomorrow's mids for Joe / RATM will be downloads only. Oh, and welcome to the forum :)

Physicals are not what they used to be however and remember Woolworths is now closed and is some sort of diy shop! RATM have that advantage of an extra days sales, having been available on the Sunday.

RATM have that advantage of an extra days sales, having been available on the Sunday. Woolies may be gone but this is bound to be sold in supermarkets and will probably have a far higher percentage of physical sales than the less than 5% that most singles (those with a physical in the first place) get.
December 14, 200915 yr HMV will shift tons of physicals and the supermarkets. Poor RATM will only make number 2 but thats a brilliant achievement. And how many others countries would you get such a hardcore christmas number 2. The british public are cool afterall. Never thought RATM would have a christmas hit with that tune what a result. Wish they would do some promo would love to hear them do it live and uncut on jonathon ross or alan carrs show after the watershed.

December 14, 200915 yr Zero. Yes, as a comparison, almost half of Alex's sales last year in the first week were physicals. Edited December 14, 200915 yr by Olympus
