December 20, 200915 yr How is Joe being punished? He's going to sell somewhere around 350-400K copies of an awful single. In what way is that punishment? I can see it now "Joseph McElderry, you have pleaded guilty to the charges brought by this court, and it is now my duty to pass sentence. You are an habitual criminal, who accepts arrest as an occupational hazard, and presumably accepts not being number one in the same casual manner. We therefore feel constrained to commit you to the maximum term allowed for these offences — you will not have a Christmas number one." He would always have this hanging over him, can see it severely damaging his confidence and his faith in the industry, he will always be remembered as the guy that was screwed over by a Facebook campaign and be laughed at over it The Climb is dire, that's not through Joe it would be $h!t whoever sung it as the song is rancid dregs music wise but we are talking about a teenage boy here not a hardened worldly 30 year old, it could well affect him
December 20, 200915 yr But the song craves to be depressing... Jeff's track is beautiful, I'm listening to it right now and it's just so relaxing, emotional and beautiful. I adore it. Dont get me wrong I love Alex but to say her version was better than one of the greatest song's ever is ludacrous and I think alot of people will agree with me. I agree with you

Now that the battle is over (bar the counting), I do feel some sympathy for him. It's not his fault that he's been caught up in all this. But some of his behaviour this week has suggested that he isn't ready for the spotlight. Similarly, Susan Boyle is a vulnerable individual for different reasons. These shows (and the likes of Big Brother) give people instant fame whether they're ready for it or not.
December 20, 200915 yr All this fuss too is about Xmas # and X Factor "stealing the xmas #1 If this song had been released in March or April would there have been the fuss ? no, its just over the top gushing sentimentality about Xmas #1 when xmas #1 is meaningless, whoever gets it is joining such illustrious names as Mr Blobby, Bob The Builder, St Winifreds School Choir, Rene and Renato  There was never any fuss when the Spice Girls were "stealing" the #1 each year too Xmas #1 is a devalued concept and has been for decades

He is still to all intents and purposes a boy, he was a college student before X Factor, he is still only 18 and most people don't mature mentally till their 20's so a kid who has been thrust into the limelight is excuseable if he acts immaturely as he is not fully emotionally mature yet

December 20, 200915 yr So you agree with me then? He's been given instant fame before he's ready for it. Possibly but time will tell, he has not had a Susan Boyle style mental breakdown he has just behaved a bit bizarrely in a national newspaper
December 20, 200915 yr ooh "goes and joins the Joe Official Forum" :kink: Even if you did i couldn't see you posting porn and calling Joe a huge c (and ends with a) t, or trying to pretend to be another forum member. Edited December 20, 200915 yr by kimberley

If he does manage to rise to expactations on "super saturday". People were writing him off on wednesday on his CD release and he sold more than Burke did on that day. December 20, 200915 yr Possibly but time will tell, he has not had a Susan Boyle style mental breakdown he has just behaved a bit bizarrely in a national newspaper But don't you think his behaviour is an indication that he's not ready for this? If he had achieved fame more gradually - by, for example, gaining a reputation in the north east before making his name nationwide - he might have been better able to cope.

You are probably right but this campaign will not help him one bit, Cowell has skin like leather, he will get through it it is Joe that I have doubts about so Cowell will just brush this off it is Joe that people are hurting by this campaign While people are finding it amusing putting one over on Cowell we are talking about a young kid's career here and wrecking that by pushing him into a breakdown or whatever isn't amusing

The last thing I want for Joe is for him to have any sort of breakdown. But Cowell's domination of the charts for the last few months of the year and his presumption that he has a monopoly on the Christmas number one needs to be stopped for the sake of the music industry. A campaign like this was bound to happen eventually; Joe just happens to be the potential victim.
December 20, 200915 yr I *HATE* this 'Joe DESERVES number one' attitude. Why?? Lady GaGa spent years singing in bars and clubs before she finally got her shot. Joe was spoon-fed with songs for weeks in a reality TV show. Who truly DESERVES a number one?? With major publicity and, let's face it, no challenges, Joe was given an easy route to the final... He never proved himself as an entertainer - a great singer, yes, but nothing exciting. You watch someone like Lady GaGa come on to the X Factor and, as well as easily being a better SINGER than Joe, she was also better ENTERTAINER by 100000000 times. No exaggeration (:P). Perhaps for the first year... The professionals have been much better than the contestants!!

Not having a Christmas Number One will give him a BREAKDOWN??!! He will be Number One next week easily!!
December 20, 200915 yr I think this talk is ridiculous. Joe will almost certainly be number 1 next week if he isn't tomorrow, and he had 10million people vote for him only a week ago, I sincerely doubt it's going to trouble him as much as a few people think it is. And if it DOES bother him that much then it's a needed reality-check. I would think he'd be more likely to have a nervous breakdown (which I certainly hope does not happen and see no reason to think will happen) as a result of X-factor than as a result of not getting the number one. Most people don't get the Christmas number one every single day of their lives.

A campaign like this was bound to happen eventually; Joe just happens to be the potential victim. The Spice Girls had a domination on the Xmas #1 too, they had what ? it was either 3 or 4 successive Xmas #1's which is almost X Factor type domination, they would bring out a song regular as clockwork to steal the Xmas #1 and there was no fuss about that Xmas #1 has for a generation been novelty records, Cliff Richard, charity records, boy/girl band songs etc, Xmas #1 is meaningless tbh its long since lost its elite status Excluding Band Aid there hasn't been a true seasonal song at #1 for 20 years so Joe or anyone else taking the slot is no big deal, Xmas #1 has long time been damaged goods
December 20, 200915 yr I just find the whole campaign so ludicrously dull tbh. I ain't really fussed who's number one at the end of the day. Some crappy rock band or X Factor winner. =/ The only one out of the top three who DESERVES number one is Lady GaGa. Edited December 20, 200915 yr by Mistletoe + Gary
December 20, 200915 yr Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait. Not having a Christmas Number One will give him a BREAKDOWN??!! He will be Number One next week easily!! He has behaved somewhat eccentricly in the media this last week and his interview in the Sun yesterday showed to me the sign of someone letting the pressure get to them big time

And they never had the advantage of a four-month advertising campaign on peak-time television.
