02 ROBIN`S NEST 17.80...the bistro sitcom on Tuesdays at 7.30pm, with Robin & Vicky Tripp (Richard O`Sullivan & Tessa Wyatt) and that one armed Irishman!

03 CORONATION STRET WEDS 16.80

04 WEDNESDAY AT EIGHT 16.70...Tom O`Conner introduces comedy with guests/music and "Name That Tune"

05 SOME MOTHER`S DO AVE EM 16.50...the final series with Frank Spencer (Michael Crawford). This series featured Dick Bentley as Frank plans to emigrate to Australia. Dick always calls "Betty", "Letty". Showing on Saturdays around 8.30pm

06 LARRY GRAYSON`S GENERATION GAME 16.30...Larry in Series One for him, but the 8th total series

07 ALL CREATURES GREAT AND SMALL 16.20...the second series for those Yorkshire vets

08 GEORGE AND MILDRED 15.90...Brian Murphy & the late Yootha Joyce in series 3 of the other spin off from "Man About The House"

09 THE SWEENEY 15.80..."Hearts & Minds". The final season for Dennis Waterman & the late John Thaw. This episode features Morecambe & Wise as a couple of comedians (cough cough)! They guest starred because in 1976, Dennis & John had appeared in the Morecambe & Wise Christmas Show 1976

10 THIS IS YOUR LIFE 15.40...Eamonn Andrews and the original and best big red book. On this one, Eamonn sneaks up on David Bellamy

11 EDWARD AND MRS SIMPSON 15.20...Edward Fox/Cynthia Harris in the 1930s based drama series

12 CROSSROADS MON 15.10...the Soap appearing in the top 20 in all 4 eposodes

13 CROSSROADS TUES 14.90

14 CROSSROADS WEDS 14.80

15 BERNIE 14.70...Bernie Winters stars in his own variety show and of course Schnorbitz (the dog). This was his first solo show away from brother Mike

17 CROSSROADS THURS 13.90

18 LILLIE 13.70...13 part series about Lillie Langtry, the mistress to Prince Of Wales and later Edward VII with Francesca Annis/Anton Rodgers/Denid Lill/Peter Egan

19 MASTERMIND 13.60...the 1978 final with Magnus Magnusson

20 THE MUPPET SHOW 13.60...Fridays at 7pm. This show featured Kris Kristofferson & Rita Coolidge. Will the Muppets be in the pop chart today?

Note: On the Friday of this week in 1978, BBC screens were blacked out by a Technicians strike. Star Trek/Citizen Smith/The Liver Birds were not screened. ITV reigned supreme with the Muppet Show/Survival Special/Sale Of The Century. BBC2 lost the Country Game/Leo Sayer. Also in 1978, we got our first taste of Aussie Soaps via "The Sullivans". Fortunately we were all at work at 12.30pm, and missed it! They were forgiven though, because we did get the Austalian version of the absolutely brilliant & funny "Father Dear Father" with the late & brilliant Patrick Cargill...Now how about a repeat of this hilarious sitcom ITV? Instead of endless re-runs of "Rising Damp".

Now someone is bound to say "how can RATM, be a new entry?" I looked it like this...In 1992, downloads didn`t exist. So, it has to be a new entry to the download chart!

Coming soon the full combined up to minute singles...but first the Top 20 Biggest Selling Christmas songs of all time:

01 DO THEY KNOW IT`S CHRISTMAS - BAND AID 1984 3,602,000

Controversy remains as Jona Lewie & Johnny Mathis hits are not actually Christmas songs...anti war for Jona, and a no mention of Christmas in the Johnny Mathis song with music "Soleado", which had already been a hit for the St Andrews Chorale in Feb 1976 as "Cloud 99".

During the week, I was aproached by a bunch of enthusiasts at DTR headquarters...they said "Dave, we are fed up with the way the charts are manipulated by crap talent shows, 12 year olds music, downloads and the like". I agreed with them all the way. So, I got my thinking cap on, and decided to come up with a more family related chart, like the days of the 60s/70s/80s.

Here is what I came up with (after dumping X Factor/all download alones etc)

01 December Song - George Michael

02 Christmas EP - Pet Shop Boys

03 Bad Romance - Lady Gaga

04 Children In Need Medley - Peter Kay

05 Silver Bells - Terry Wogan/Aled Jones

21 You Got The Love - Florence And The Machine

22 Cornerstone Ltd - Arctic Monkeys

23 Rain - Mika

24 Just Like You - Ian Brown

25 Man`s Machine EP - Jamie T

26 Winter Winds - Mumford & Sons

27 Dominoes - Big Pink

28 The Spell - Alphabeat

29 Goodbye England - Laura Marling

30 Kings & Queens - 30 Seconds To Mars

That`s the best I could do...with no downloads/crap talent shows/manipulated radioplay/boring same old Xmas songs...but just physically all ages related sales!

Hang on for this week`s singles...

No comments forthcoming from me, except the manipulation continues. 19,000 ahead for Joe at this point.

Yay, joe number 1 :D

Will rage machine have their highest charting ever if they are number 2? if it is then good for them!

Edited by Jmh123

cheers Dave!

It does look like Joe is going to do it, and probably by a good 50,000 or so come Sunday. At least it's made the Christmas chart a bit more exciting this year and if it makes Simon Cowell think twice about releasing another dull cover version next year it will have achieved something.

Good chart from 1978 and a couple of weeks later the whole country was coated in snow (and it lasted for much of the next two months!) but the country never ground to a halt. Well, apart from seemingly half the country going on strike! Including the teachers for 3 and a half weeks in the worst part of the winter in February 1979 - excellent!

Brilliant info as ever.

Simon Cowell is the devil incarnate as far as I'm come concerned.

Have a Merry Xmas and may the next decade be better for music than this decade has been.

Go Joe! :) Was hoping the original version would RE much higher though.

cheers Dave!

It's Simon's 'control' of the charts that was the basis for the campaign not the Song choice, cover or not. :)

Thanks Dave

How is Pet Shop Boys ahead of Gaga on the X Factorless chart? I wish they could get a number 2 single these days... Great to see Alphabeat in there. Has their new single or album registered on the pre-order chart yet?

 Actually thought Rage would do it for a while

Oh well, it will be close- and this has scared Simon Cowell- if campaigns like this keep going, it could work one year

And the inevitable has happened.

Nice one products of Cowell's music industry takeover.

PSBs ahead because we`ve knock out all downloads on that.

No sign of Alphabeat yet.

I remember Dustmen`s strike/Firemen and all that stuff. Leading to the end of the original Labour rule of Britain. I often wonder what we be like now had Mr Callaghan won the 1979 Election...The Public Transport/Gas/Electric etc may not have all been privatised. Is that why the country grinds to a halt today?

^ Well compared to this it is a work of genius and creativity.....
