Yes but why re-habilitate someone who's never ever going to come out of jail? Waste of resources. I agree with trying to rehabilitate burglars etc and anyone else who is going to be eventuslly released.

How can peter tobin be rehabilitated when he can't even admit to the crimes he has committed. There are many people out their who may never know what happened to their children as this man refuses to discuss anything about his crimes.

Tobin is one of those rare cases where I'm perfectly happy for him to be told he will never be released. But that doesn't mean he should be treated in a way which would be likely to put the lives of prison officers at risk.

I don't care who it is, I'll never agree with the death penalty. Apart from the practical difficulties (the fact that it would be impossible to guarantee an innocent person wouldn't be sentenced to death), I don't see why people like Tobin should get the easy way out, having to suffer only a few minutes' pain compared to a lifetime's.

Because he will probably come to terms with what he's done during the rehabilitation process...indeed, many prisoners do. In any case, there shouldn't be definite terms such as '30 years' at this point (indeed, I'd argue there shouldn't be ANNOUNCED life sentences), as it will only encourage suicide. Far better to have indefinite terms so he has the hope of being let out, even if he won't actually be...

I honestly do believe there should be separate prisons for people who commit petty crimes like robbery without being violent or fraud. These people can be rehabilitated if given the correct guidance.

However people like tobin, ian huntly and that vile vannessa George women should all be put in prisons under the most grotesque conditions and should have to live a horrible life for the crimes they have committed. I can't imagine how bad it must have been when that girl was buried alive under floorboards, the thought doesn't even bare thinking about.

I absolutely agree with this. There does need to be a very strong rehabilitation element generally in our legal system, for convicts like petty thieves and drug suppliers or whatever, as well as very young people who commit horrendous crimes, such as the kids who murdered Jamie Bulger. Forcing them to live in horrific conditions would only be counter-productive, as they would have no incentive not to re-offend when they were let out. BUT people like Tobin and Huntley should NOT be given the opportunity for rehabilitation. They've already surrendered their right to be part of civilised society.
