Now we're nearing the end of the noughties, and we can look back (with anger) at how music has stagnated these past 10 years, can you think of the 5 albums you loved the most this decade?

There has been some incredible music released, as well as some hideous rubbish.... so, bearing this in mind - what are your top 5 singles and albums of the past 10 years.... and why.

01 Amy Winehouse - Frank

02 Amy Winehouse - Back To Black

03 Zero 7 - Simple Things

04 Goldfrapp - Black Cherry

05 Basement Jaxx - Kish Kash

Sorry I'm more of a singles person than an album person, but I've managed to pick my 5 essentials with ease.

Singles (I've mixed this up, I've tried to pick my fave tracks accross the board)

01 Solu Music - Fade

02 Fedde Le Grand Vs Ida Corr - Let Me Think About It

03 Amy Winehouse - In My Bed (I think this sounds like no other)

04 The Ones - Flawless

05 Lade GaGa - Bad Romance (a little premature, but this is a dead cert future classic, just blindin!)

ScottyEm's included almost the same albums I was going to

It's hard to pick 5, isn't it?

albums -

1. lady gaga - the fame

2. james morrison - undiscovered

3. la roux - la roux

4. falling up - crashings

5. air traffic - fractured life

songs -

1. lady gaga - poker face

2. la roux - bulletproof

3. ian brown - time is my everything

4. lady gaga - bad romance

5. the prodigy - take me to the hospital

erm.... can we have a retro perspective in these replies please?... otherwise ill be forced to move the thread to the pop forum, which i dont want to do 'cos all the fanboys will swamp it with their heros recordings.

im not an album fan, so my list would be made on very dodgy grounds cos ive not listend to many. therefore i wont list albums.

singles

well... 2 are going to be from my all time favorite rock band QUEENS OF THE STONEAGE, who imho has produced some of the best rock ever... 1) no one knows, 2) go with the flow , utterly superb and these tracks restored my interest in rock. they are my 2 fav rock tracks of all time ... so the noughties werent devoid of great music dispite its unoriginal generic music thats dominated the decade.

3) ROBYN 'with every heartbeat' , another track that id rate as one of the all time greats of its genre. imho its a beautifully crafted track.

4) OUTKAST 'hey ya' one of the most original retro tracks of the decade, paying homage to the likes of sly stone, ike turner et al. infuriatingly catchy but a brilliant track.

5) BLU CANTREL ft SEAN PAUL 'breathe' ... the most overtly bluesy track of the decade? a great track thats brought blues right upto date.

id also like to mention... the white stripes, hives, gorillaz, arctic monkeys and mgmt who all have produced some outstanding music this last decade.

Go With The Flow is a bit overated imo, they have some much better singles such as 'The Lost Art of Keeping A Secret' and 'Monsters In The Parasol' although, they have even better album tracks ('Song For The Dead', 'Misfit Love', 'Someones In The Wolf' could go on...).

Definatly the best rock band of the noughties though.

Ermm. Albums is a bit tricky for me atm, I think I can pull a Top 5 of the noughties however;

Eminem feat. Dido - Stan; Used to really dislike this. It's so cleverly written in structure, and has a deeper message than (honestly) around 98.5% of most chart rap songs of the 21st Century. It's deservedly critically acclaimed and rightly so!

Anastacia - Sick & Tired; 'Taylor Dayne' does middle-eastern arabian inspired track. I like it. Doesn't conform; yet still being hugely mainstream. Has simple melody & lyrics. Definitely one of her highlights.

Gorillaz - Clint Eastwood; Definitely a staple track within the noughties. Similar to 'Stan', one of the few rap (although this fuses elements of electro & rock) songs that doesn't go on about getting laid with chicks.

Gnarls Barkley - Amazingly catchy. Cee-lo's voice oozes soul, and despite them being pretty much a 'one hit wonder'; this was the track that kicked of 'chart downloading'. Arguably, the track has made a massive impact within the 21st Century.

Justin Timberlake - Sexyback - Yeah, I went there. Despite not having the charisma as Michael Jackson, or creativity of Prince; when Timberlake hooked up again with Timbaland they produced this exceptional record. The track itself is influenced by artists such as David Bowie, James Brown, David Byrne and featured 'new' productive technology. It's definitely influenced a lot of tracks released in the later half of the noughties.

Singles. (in no particular order). all my personal opinion of course. :)

Volbeat. 'The Gardens tale". Genre defying scandanavian band, a cross between The Ramones and Metallica, with a hint of Beatles and rock-a-billy.

T.A.T.U. 'All the things she said'. in amongst all the controversy and staged lesbianism there was actually a very good song.

Oasis 'Songbird'. Just a great old fashioned love song.

Leona Lewis 'Bleeding Love'. Killer lead single for her first album(The lesson seems to have been forgotten on her second album), great tune, great voice, about the only reality TV contestant I can stomach, genuine talent.

Eagles of Death Metal, Only want you'. One those deceptivly simple pounding rock songs that I love.

Albums. well, I have only bought ONE this decade!!...lol. So I'll just name that

The Darkness - Permission to land. Stuffed full of the type of rock I loved in the seventies. Tongue in cheek spoof or not???, I still cant decide, but I dont really care, the music is great and I love this album.

albums...

1. KATE BUSH - Aerial.... a double CD of sonic soundscapes that really wasn't appreciated enough on its release - hearing it now, the multi-layered beauty of this absolute masterpiece just glows.

2. GOLDFRAPP - Felt Mountain... an album that sounded unlike anything else at the time. Such a shame this wonderful, eccentric, otherworldly band became seduced by Ms Goldfrapp's desperate lust for superstardom and sold out. Still, surely THE most influential band of the decade.

3. ALISON MOYET - Hometime... a faultless, beautiful, organic piece of work, given that extra touch in the right direction by Portishead's Geoff Barrow. A lost classic.

4. MORRISSEY - You Are The Quarry... a blistering return from Britain's finest-ever wordsmith. Miles and away his finest solo album, there's not a duff track on it - shame he's failed to capture this form again this decade.

5. PORTISHEAD - 3.... taking their unique brand of melodrama in a completely new Can-like direction, the fans of their loungey older stuff just didn't 'get' this album - the rest of us realised it's exactly what this band should have been doing all along. An incredible record.

Notable mentions to Roisin Murphy, Oasis, Martina Topley-Bird, Grace Jones, The Killers, Zero 7, Client, Basement Jaxx, Midlake, Bat For Lashes, Siouxsie, Editors, Bent, Pet Shop Boys, Kasabian, Massive Attack, Antony and the Johnsons, Metro Area, Hercules and Love Affair, Amy Winehouse and Empire of the Sun.

singles....

1. AMY WINEHOUSE - Back to Black.... what can be said about this single that hasn't already been said? Her finest moment to date IMO.

2. CLIENT - Zerox Machine... take 3 foxy electro goddesses and give them an old Adam and the Ants track and what do you get? Pure GENIUS.

3. PNAU - Embrace.... the Empire of the Sun crew and Ladyhawke got together a few years ago to record this pop classic. Should've been number one for most of the decade.

4. MOLOKO - Familiar Feeling... from their fantastic 'Statues' album, this was just a brilliant, brilliant single.

5. HERCULES AND LOVE AFFAIR - Blind.... featuring Antony Hegarty, this is a classic, another one that should've been a massive hit.

Notable mentions - Pete Burns and the Pet Shop Boys, Oasis, Goldfrapp, a-ha, The Killers, Bat For Lashes, Adele, Siobhan Fahey, Tracey Thorn, Massive Attack, Portishead, Empire of the Sun, Roisin Murphy, Madonna, La Roux, Lady GaGa, Cyndi Lauper and Gorillaz.

These are utter belters, Moloko's "Statues" album was a real grower and you've reminded me of the magnificent "Forever More".

Not gonna touch singles as that's a huge mind melt, but here's my albums:

5. The Answer - Everyday Demons [2009] - If anyone asks me "Are there any new bands that sound like classic-rock?", these guys are always top of the list. A vocalist who sounds like Robert Plant and a very tight, melodic rhythm section, make these guys one of my favourite classic-rock acts ever. This album, their second, managed to get them the support slot of the year - supporting AC/DC on their Black Ice tour. Will be huge in the world of rock in years to come.

4. Muse - Black Holes And Revelations [2006] - Mixing their bombastic nature with a lot of very catchy hooks and melodies, this is IMO Muse's second finest effort to Origin of Symmetry. 'Knights of Cydonia' is obviously an album highlight, with Muse crafting a true 21st century 'Bohemian Rhapsody'.

3. Guns N' Roses - Chinese Democracy [2008] - I don't care what anyone says, I can't help but love this album. It just sounds like nothing else out there. Elton John meets Queen meets Metallica meets AC/DC meets Nine Inch Nails, it's the most eclectic mix of styles I've ever heard mixed together...and it works. Hard-rock riffing, blisteringly fast guitar solos, beautifully enchanting piano ballads and danceable, funky rhythms. I love this album and for me, well worth the ludicrous wait.

2. Iron Maiden - Brave New World [2000] - An appropriately titled album to usher in the new millenium, and despite their age, this is actually one of Maiden's finest albums. Plenty of crowd-pleasing aethemic moments, excellent guitar work, and returning vocalist Bruce Dickinson is as energetic and versatile as ever.

1. Metallica - Death Magnetic [2008] - This absolutely blew my mind the first time I heard it. I knew Metallica could have a return to form, but this was something else; this was an album so powerful that in my collection it seriously challenges their 'Big Four' thrash albums, which most had considered untouchable. This album is everything that is great about Metallica, everything that is great about the genre of heavy-metal - it's heavy, technical, fist-pumping, head-banging riffs, solos and vocal melodies at their absolute best. It makes no compromises, and you *bleep*ing love it for it.

Notable albums which didn't make the cut: Opeth 'Blackwater Park', Megadeth 'Endgame', Iron Maiden 'A Matter Of Life And Death', Muse 'Absolution', Velvet Revolver 'Contraband', Foo Fighters 'Echoes Silence Patience and Grace', Alestorm 'Black Sails At Midnight' and loads more.

I definately agree with you there on Muse's 'Black Holes & Revelations', fantastic album! 'Chinese Democracy' however... see I dunno, sometimes I laugh at it, other times I'll find one or two good songs on there, it's a tricky one!
Don't get me wrong, there's some real dirt tracks on that album, some completely bizarre moments as well. The techno breakdown in 'Better', the jungle noises in 'There Was A Time', the choir in 'Scraped', the Transylvanian accent in 'Sorry'...yet for every moment that misses the mark, there's always an incredible moment that really makes you pay attention. I think that's why I love it, it's a listen that really keeps you hooked, for good and bad. It's like Axl himself - unpredictable, occasionally frustrating, yet undeniably charismatic and fascinating.

Albums

1.Bloc Party - Silent Alarm

A very exciting album that is filled with melody and great guitar.

2.Mars Volta - Deloused in the Commatarium

Astonishing album that takes some time to get into but it's worth it. It's a runaway prog rock epic.

3.Muse - Absolution

Origin of Symetry and Black Holes and Revelations certainly have high points but for consistancy I go for Absolution. Just simple, hard rock.

4.Tori Amos - Scarlet's Walk

A bit too long at 18 tracks but this is her most rewarding work since From the Choirgirl Hotel. It's just singer-songwriter stuff, nothing experimental but it's still great.

5.Blur - Think Tank

Great set of ballads from a great ballad singer. As usual there's quirkiness in the songs which makes them alot more endearing.

Singles

1. Mars Volta - Inertiatic ESP

Makes Muse sound like Westlife

2. Radiohead - Pyramid Song

The best song for listening to while watching falling snow at night. Heartbreaking.

3.Antony and the Johnsons - Hope There's Someone

More heartbreak. :(

4.tATu - All the Things She Said

The most perfectly crafted pop song of the decade. Every part of it is filled with longing.

5. Motorcycle - As the Rush Comes

The full version has one of the best trance breakdowns I've ever heard.

5. Motorcycle - As the Rush Comes

The full version has one of the best trance breakdowns I've ever heard.

I agree this is a lush track, was nice to see great club tracks breaking the mainstream at a time when we were exposed to all that Ultrabeat $h!t.
