BuzzJack Favourite Xmas Songs countdown 2009

:naughty: B) :cheer: :D :yahoo:

Many Thanks to all of you who have taken the trouble in voting.....

Tonight I'm going to fairly quickly countdown up those songs that failed to reach the Final 30 (which as there was a four way tie for 30th means we go up to #34).

So the positions up to 34th are determined by the points accumulated in phase two of the game.

As I'm not going to countdown the Top 33 until tomorrow mid/late afternoon, I'll keep the thread open in case there are any last minutes voters THREAD IS ON LINK HERE

I will reveal what those songs were tomorrow .....

Now "Wonderful Christmas Time" is one Christmas "classic" I can THOROUGHLY understand being so low.

It is the only thing preventing Mariah Carey from having the most irritating Christmas song of all time - this alone should have instantly null and voided McCartney's claim to be a musical legend. Horrific tosh.

Not really any shockers for me so far. although O Holy Night should be alot higher imo

33rd Re Little Drummer Boy/Peace On Earth - David Bowie & Bing Crosby 9

The track was originally recorded on 11 September 1977 for Crosby's 1977 television special, Bing Crosby's Merrie Olde Christmas. The pair exchanged dialogue about what they do for Christmas before singing the traditional song, "Little Drummer Boy", with a new counterpoint with original lyrics written for the special, "Peace on Earth". Bowie's appearance has been described as a "surreal" event, undertaken at a time that he was "actively trying to normalise his career". He has since recalled that he only appeared on the show because "I just knew my mother liked him." Crosby died just over a month after recording the special, which aired on 30 November 1977.

According to co-writer Ian Fraser, Bowie balked at singing "Little Drummer Boy". "I hate this song. Is there something else I could sing?" Fraser recalls Bowie telling him. Fraser, along with songwriter Larry Grossman and the special's scriptwriter, Buz Kohan, then wrote "Peace on Earth" as a counterpoint to "Little Drummer Boy". Crosby performed "Little Drummer Boy", while Bowie sang the new tune "Peace on Earth". This song was released by RCA in 1982 and bacame a surreal Xmas #3 hit.

32nd 39th Mistletoe And Wine - Cliff Richard 11

Sir Cliff Richard, a professed Christian, has had several hits with a Christmas theme.

This one was released in 1988 and reached #1 on the UK secular charts denying Kyle & Jason access to the #1 spot for a month.

His other Xmas themed hits are:

Little Town #11 - Dec 1982

Mistletoe and Wine #1 - Dec 1988

Saviour's Day #1 - Dec 1990

The Millennium Prayer #1 - Dec 1999

Santa's List #6 - Dec 2003

21st Century Christmas #2 - Dec 2006

31st 32nd Driving Home For Christmas - Chris Rea 14

Incredibly this Xmas sleeper classic only reached #53 in 1988; it only reached its chart peak 19 years later in 2007 at #33.

21st 13th Christmas Time (Don't Let The Bells End) - The Darkness 38

This innuendo led track famously got pipped to the Xmas #1 spot in 2003 by the Tears For Fears cover taken from the Donnie Darko movie "Mad World".

20th Ne Once Upon A Christmas Song - Geraldine McQueen 39

Peter Kay's hilarious spoof reality music show character and nemesis of Simon Cowell scored "her" second top 5 hit of 2008 again co-written to the music of Gary Barlow with this track that quite literally does what the lyrics say. Far better than any X-Factor winning song IMHO.

19th 16th December Will Be Magic Again - Kate Bush 40

"December Will Be Magic Again" was written and originally recorded in 1979 by Britain's greatest female singer/songwriter and national treasure, but not released until the Christmas season of the next year on 17 November 1980. The single peaked at number 29 on the UK Singles Chart, but due to its early release date had slipped before the Christmas week. No promotional video was filmed for this single, but an alternate recording of the song was performed on Bush's 1979 Christmas television special. Currently a certain Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta has been performing parts of this song on her piano during her American leg of her Monster Ball tour.
