Posted December 28, 200915 yr The Greatest TV Shows of the Noughties (Channel 4) Last night Channel 4 ran down the UK's Greatest TV Shows of the decade including US imports as chosen by the public; TV critics/writers and TV industry producers, actors, etc: 01) Top Gear 02) The Apprentice 03) Doctor Who 04) Britains Got Talent 05) QI 06) The X Factor 07) The Simpsons 08) The Office 09) Planet Earth 10) Life On Mars 11) Friends 12) Harry Hill's TV Burp 13) Shameless 14) Grand Designs 15) Gavin and Stacey 16) Coronation Street 17) Spooks 18) Strictly Come Dancing 19) I'm A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here 20) Dragons Den What do you think of the results, any surprises? ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Personally I think the Top 3 is about right except I would have Dr Who as the #1. The biggest shock is seeing The Simpsons & Friends in the Top 20; as Friends definitely peaked in the 1990s before finishing in 2004; and The Simpsons is a pale shadow to its early 1990s heyday as Family Guy really should have had a Top 20 place instead of it. Otherwise I'm very surprised US import wise there is no Sopranos or no 24 (and I have not mentioned Wire; West Wing or Lost); and Shameless and Grand Design don't belong in the Top 20 either. Yet there is no room for the hilarious Come Dine With Me which is better than Dragon's Den; no room for major TV epics like Band Of Brothers or Rome; and  at Big Brother not being included as I honestly expected it to be Top 10 but obviously it is such a pale shadow of what it used to be the backlash against it has really really hurt it's rating. Whilst can anyone seriously say that Gavin & Stacey is a better BBC sitcom than The Thick Of It or Outnumbered and keep a straight (Po-Po-Po-Po Poker) face.
December 28, 200915 yr Family Guy not being top 20 is a joke. Granted it has been pretty dire lately, but given The Simpsons has been dire ALL DECADE it really ought to be in its place.
December 28, 200915 yr Family Guy not being top 20 is a joke. Granted it has been pretty dire lately, but given The Simpsons has been dire ALL DECADE it really ought to be in its place. As much as I love The Simspons, Family Guy should be there in it's place
December 28, 200915 yr Predictable list. Desperate Housewives should've been in there! :( I'm sure there songs list will be even more predictable though ...
December 28, 200915 yr Not surprised at the list although no 'Family Guy' is a little bit of a shock... Ergh at some of that list though. Especially the horrifically overrated 'Gavin & Stacey' :puke:

Especially the horrifically overrated 'Gavin & Stacey' :puke: THANKYOU! I watched the Xmas Special with my family and I really couldn't see what was so funny. That and James Corden is one of the most unfunny 'comedians' atm.

December 28, 200915 yr Im dleighted shameless is in there but no Eastenders or family guy is crazy. I know, Eastenders has been so much better than Coronation Street this decade, especially in the latter part of it :(
December 28, 200915 yr THERE IS A THREAD ABOUT THE BEST SONGS LIST IN THE LOUNGE. I DO NOT KNOW HOW TO POST LINKS - SORRY! SO, IF SOMEONE COULD, IT WOULD BE MOST APPRECIATED!!!! Thanks :) :)
December 28, 200915 yr Those results are a total joke. Utterly laughable. Top Gear the best TV programme of the decade? Absurd. It's very enjoyable light entertainment and perhaps it could be a contendor to top a list which didn't include comedy, drama or soap but since this list does it makes a total mockery of it all. If you remove panel/reality/studio-based shows you're left with: 01 Doctor Who 02 The Simpsons 03 The Office 04 Life On Mars 05 Friends 06 Shameless 07 Gavin & Stacey 08 Coronation Street 09 Spooks Doctor Who has been utterly inconsistent this decade, veering wildly from exceptional to embarassing. The Simpsons has no spark whatsoever now and hasn't had for years so what it's doing so high I can't fathom. The Office isn't my cup of tea but it was at least original. Life On Mars is the same story although (unpopular opinion alert) I much prefer Ashes To Ashes. Friends deserves its placing since series 8 in particular was great and Shameless has had its moments, but Corrie? Really?! Eastenders has blown it out of the water consistently! There are also some glaring omissions; at its peak Bad Girls was daring and pretty ground-breaking drama and should have flown into the top ten of any such list. And what about the likes of Desperate Housewives? I should really stop getting so wound up by these lists but it's hard when somebody claims that fucking Grand Designs, a formulaeic property show presented by one of the most insincere men ever to grace television, is the fourteenth-best show of the decade. Christ.
December 29, 200915 yr Top Gear is in my opinion a terrible #1. From that top 5 Dr Who should have been #1 Glad to see The Simpsons in the list. But like others I am surprised Family Guy didn't rate in the top 20.
December 29, 200915 yr My Top 10; 1) Battlestar Galactica 2) Lost 3) Six Feet Under 4) True Blood 5) South Park 6) Damages 7) 24 8) Desperate Housewives 9) Glee 10) Buffy the Vampire Slayer/Angel I'm a big fan of American TV, granted this is a list for British television, but if Doctor Who/Torchwood is the best we can do when it comes to drama/sci-fi then it's slightly embarrassing. Top Gear being the best TV show of the decade? Grand Designs in the Top 10!? Really, it's all laughable. Keeping it British- Bad Girls is my favourite scripted British TV show of the decade, Big Brother is my favourite reality and The Office my favourite comedy/sitcom.
