I'm surprised that 'Blurred Lines' was bigger in the UK than in the US tbh. When you take population into account about 2.35% of the UK bought it yet only 2.18% of the US bought the song.

That's reasonably close though

I believe as a rule the American market buys less music per person than the UK does. Certainly that is the tale certifications tell, particularly once you get into the albums. And then there's the question of how many platinum albums are released in America each year compared to the UK? I really doubt the comparison is favourable to the Americans.
Jason Derulo - Whatcha Say - 3,988,000

Jason Derulo - In My Head - 3,174,000

Jason Derulo - Ridin' Solo - 3,033,000

Never knew these were quite this big. Very impressive that his first three singles all surpassed three million.

Just over ten per year lately. 'Babel' and 'Midnight Memories' each sold 1,096,000 last year and were 11th and 12th respectively on the year-end list.

Since we've just had the countdown of the best-selling downloads in the UK, I matched that list with the first post of this thread (not quite as accurate but the best that we have) so we can see which songs are higher in the US or the UK. Songs that aren't on the UK list are crossed out. Red means it's lower in the UK and blue means it's higher (note that #4 is the same on both charts).

20 MAROON 5 FEAT CHRISTINA AGUILERA - MOVES LIKE JAGGER - 6,347,000 01/25/2014 (#3 UK)

Any surprises?? :D

I'm surprised by this one given that Radio 1 wouldn't play it.

It's not really a 'surprise' but it's odd that 'Rolling In The Deep' is right at the top in the USA but much lower in her home country. Although of course the reverse is true for 'Someone Like You' anyway (with that at almost the same position in the US as 'Rolling In The Deep' is in the UK).

76 THE LUMINEERS - HO HEY - 4,438,737 (#61 UK)

I'm most shocked at this one! For 'Ho Hey' to be higher in the UK, where it had considerably less airplay :o

I guess the difference-maker is the UK loves their reality TV, and similarly loves exposing the same songs on reality TV. And I suppose this kind of song is a bit more "UK"? Certainly feel more of a typical British hit than American.

I was reading an old issue of Billboard and came across what is perhaps the earliest version of this very list. Ten years ago...

10 months of sales.

That's less than 30k a month for Outkast ... WOW

That is actually quite adorable :kink: Britney Spears once had the third best selling digital song of all time!
