And before the first new chart which will appear shortly a few links and some background information The Irish chart is revealed online every Friday afternoon and covers sales between Friday and Thursday. Since the beginning of 2007 the main sales chart has included all physical and download sales as in the UK. The main charts are the singles chart (a Top 50), the artist albums chart (a Top 100), the compilation album chart (a Top 30) and the download-only chart (a Top 20). The first 3 of these can be found at www.irma.ie while www.chart-track.com carries the Top 50 singles, Top 75 Artist albums, Top 20 compilations and Top 20 downloads along with weekly commentaries. A weekly airplay chart is compiled by Neilsen but since the middle of 2008 this has been unavailable to the public. During 2009 IRMA also started publishing the Indie Album Chart - initially a Top 20 but this was reduced to a Top 10 after a couple of weeks. For the last couple of years the first and only broadcast of the chart on radio has been on Sunday afternoons. Veteran presenter Larry Gogan had a 3 hour show between 2 and 5 and the middle hour was dedicated to the new chart, usually kicking off with tracks from the top selling compilation and artist albums, then a couple of tracks from other album entries or something from the lower end of the singles chart with the Top 10 played in order - though not necessarily in full. In December, however, RTE announced a brand new schedule to come into effect from Monday 4th January. This sees Larry moving back to weekdays - 3 to 4pm (Mon - Fri). Looking at the weekend schedules the only timeslot that they could put the chart in is sometime between 2 and 5pm on Sunday - Larry's current show - which is now to be presented by Nikki Hayes. The more likely scenario was for Larry to present the chart on Friday aftenoons but having listened to his first Friday afternoon show that is not the case. With no sign of a chart show on Sunday either that means that the only airing of the chart on Irish radio is the nightly broadcast of "Top 40 Oifigiúil na hÉireann" (Ireland's Official Top 40) between 6 and 8 pm on Irish language internet station Raidió Rí Rá. In the meantime there is a chart page on the 2FM website which is done in blog form with the new charts added on Friday / Saturday. It can be found at http://2fm.rte.ie/blogs/2fm_chart_blog/ For full archive charts from January 2000 onwards I would recommend the chart-track website as it contains all the weekly charts since then. The irma website seems to have added an archive section which can be found at http://www.irma.ie/charts_archive/overview.asp though this only seems to cover the Top 50 singles and artist albums of 2007 at present. The irma site also contains year end Top 20s since 2001. Also worth checking out is www.irishcharts.ie which contains a fully searchable singles database going right back to 1962 when the first recognised chart was compiled (though there was a Top 10 published regularly from 1959). It is restricted to Top 30 hits but seems to be updated on a regular basis. This site also contains various other facts and figures and does have a certifications section though this is rather limited in content. Sales info is extremely hard to come by for Ireland and the only details that seem to appear are those mentioned from time to time in the chart-track commentary. Many pre-2000 singles charts were posted on the UKMix forums back in 2006. Meanwhile his first album ‘These Streets’ climbs from No26 to No12, marking a great start to the new decade for the Scottish singer/songwriter. Joe McElderry holds at No1 on the Singles Chart for a fourth week with ‘The Climb’, but may face a challenge next week from two newcomers just below him. Although a very close contender for the top spot, Sidney Samson’s ‘Riverside (Let’s Go!)’ has to be content with climbing one place to No2 while Iyaz also takes ‘Replay’ up one place to No3. The biggest presence on the Singles Chart this week, however, has to be the Cast from Glee as the hit U.S. TV series hits our screens. Six of their cover versions as aired in the first two episodes occupy the Top 50, the highest of which is their recording of Journey’s ‘Don’t Stop Believin’ jumping from last week’s No33 to this week’s No4. Journey themselves benefit from this exposure as their original version enjoys its highest chart position for two years as it climbs to No16 and has now had an astonishing 86 weeks in the Top 50. Paolo Nutini holds at No1 on the Album Chart with ‘Sunny Side Up’ ahead of Florence & The Machine whose ‘Lungs’ climbs from No5 to No2 and Lady Gaga who drops a place to occupy the third slot. This week’s highest new entry belongs to Vampire Weekend whose second album ‘Contra’ enters the chart at No4 , a huge improvement on their self titled first album which entered the chart at No54 and took 6 months to climb to its peak position of No24. You Me At Six also see their second album outshine their first as ‘Hold Me Down’ enters the Chart at No24 – 2008’s ‘Take Off Your Colours’ failed to make the Chart.
