This must be some form of record, right? I never ever remember a song having a third run at No1. I expected Chart Track to mention something about it, but - informative as ever- they said nothing.

They need to hire CZB from UKMix! :) Here's what his research has thrown up

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Incidentally, while on the subject of Jedward, this is the third time their single has gone to number one in Ireland. While many hits have been to number one twice - usually interrupted just briefly for a week or two - three times is a much rarer feat.

As far as I can tell, this is only the sixth Irish chart-topper to go back to number one after being there twice previously:

29-Mar-62 THE SHADOWS - WONDERFUL LAND - 1

05-Apr-62 ELVIS PRESLEY - ROCK-A-HULA BABY - 1

12-Apr-62 THE SHADOWS - WONDERFUL LAND - 3

03-May-62 ROY ORBISON - DREAM BABY - 1

10-May-62 THE SHADOWS - WONDERFUL LAND - 1

11-Jun-64 ROY ORBISON - IT'S OVER - 1

18-Jun-64 MILLIE - MY BOY LOLLIPOP - 1

25-Jun-64 ROY ORBISON - IT'S OVER - 1

02-Jul-64 BRENDAN BOWYER - BLESS YOU (FOR BEING AN ANGEL) - 2

16-Jul-64 ROY ORBISON - IT'S OVER - 1

15-Jun-67 JOHNNY KELLY & THE CAPITOL SHOWBAND - BLACK VELVET BAND - 1

22-Jun-67 PROCOL HARUM - A WHITER SHADE OF PALE - 4

20-Jul-67 JOHNNY KELLY & THE CAPITOL SHOWBAND - BLACK VELVET BAND - 2

03-Aug-67 THE BEATLES - ALL YOU NEED IS LOVE - 1, then equal #1 for 1 week

10-Aug-67 JOHNNY KELLY & THE CAPITOL SHOWBAND - BLACK VELVET BAND - 5 (equal #1 for 1 week, then four weeks #1)

11-Mar-72 NILSSON - WITHOUT YOU - 1

18-Mar-72 SANDIE & THE DIXIES - CEOL AN GHRA - 1

25-Mar-72 NILSSON - WITHOUT YOU - 1

and, much later:

16-Nov-76 NILSSON - WITHOUT YOU - 2

17-Feb-92 SHAKESPEAR'S SISTER - STAY - 1

24-Feb-92 U2 - ONE - 1

02-Mar-92 SHAKESPEAR'S SISTER - STAY - 1

09-Mar-92 ERIC CLAPTON - TEARS IN HEAVEN - 1

16-Mar-92 SHAKESPEAR'S SISTER - STAY - 1

23-Mar-92 ERIC CLAPTON - TEARS IN HEAVEN - 1

30-Mar-92 SHAKESPEAR'S SISTER - STAY - 3

04-Feb-10 JEDWARD FEATURING VANILLA ICE - UNDER PRESSURE (ICE ICE BABY) - 1

11-Feb-10 HELPING HAITI - EVERYBODY HURTS - 1

18-Feb-10 JEDWARD FEATURING VANILLA ICE - UNDER PRESSURE (ICE ICE BABY) - 2

04-Mar-10 BOYZONE - GAVE IT ALL AWAY - 1

11-Mar-10 JEDWARD FEATURING VANILLA ICE - UNDER PRESSURE (ICE ICE BABY) - 1

As can be seen, the champion returner to number one is still Shakespear's Sister - who spent six weeks at number one, only the final three consecutive, in 1992.

While checking all this out, I belatedly noticed something else that we all overlooked last year, when three different other number ones interrupted Lady GaGa's time at the top with "Poker Face". There was a record that went to number one just twice in 1994 - but four others separated its first week at the top from the rest:

17-Oct-94 BOYZONE - LOVE ME FOR A REASON - 1

24-Oct-94 WHIGFIELD - SATURDAY NIGHT - 1

31-Oct-94 BON JOVI - ALWAYS - 2

14-Nov-94 DUSTIN - SPANISH LADY - 4

12-Dec-94 EAST 17 - STAY ANOTHER DAY - 2

26-Dec-94 BOYZONE - LOVE ME FOR A REASON - 3

Shaky Fan's Commentary - Extra

Apologies for the irregular updates over the last few weeks. I have working at something else and am pleased to announce that it is now ready! As I've mentioned in the past I have a number of audio tapes scattered around with recordings of the Irish Chart Shows. I now have the facilty to transfer these to my pc and (as of this afternoon) onto You Tube. It will mean editing out the commercials and songs but over the coming months I will be adding as much as possible. I've set up an account as ChartShowGolden and the first clip is on there now. To test the waters I just used a countdown of the Top 15 but I do have the full rundowns for that week and will update it soon. The first clip is at

and is from September 1997.

Chart Track Commentary

Double Top For Boyzone

Following their appearance on Friday’s Late Late Show, Boyzone climb back to No1 on the Singles Chart with ‘Gave It All Away’ - and with ‘Brother’ holding for a second week at the top of the Album Chart they’re the first artists to take the ‘Double’ since Lady Gaga back in February 2009 (‘Just Dance’ and ‘The Fame’). For Ronan Keating, it’s a second consecutive Mothers Day No1 album – his ‘Songs For My Mother’ took last year’s honours.

Lady Gaga and Beyoncé climb nine places from No11 to No2 on this week’s Singles Chart with ‘Telephone’ following the premier of the controversial 9 minute Tarantino-inspired promo video. This week’s highest new entry is at No14 for the independently-released ‘Cheltenham’ by The Favourites. Based on Petula Clark’s ‘Downtown’, the timely charity release features the vocals of Laura Critchley, supported by a chorus of celebrities from the racing world. The Glee Cast have the next new entry at

No15 with ‘True Colors’ – originally a No6 hit for Cyndi Lauper in Ireland back in 1986. The third and final Top 20 new entry is for Co. Cork family trio Crystal Swing at No18 with another independent release ‘He Drinks Tequila’ – a massive YouTube hit, since boosted by their Late Late Show performance on Friday.

After hovering in the lower reaches of the Album Chart for several weeks on the strength of imports, ‘Glee - The Music: Vol 2’ climbs to No2 this week with its official Irish release, while the first volume drops to No4. The next Top 40 new entry is at No35 for Sugababes with their aptly named seventh studio album ‘Sweet 7’. Their first release without final founder member Keisha Buchanan, this is their first album to enter the chart outside the Top 20 since their debut release ‘One Touch’ in 2000.

Shaky Fan's Commentary

Just 4 weeks after Glee The Music: Vol 1 climbed 40 places to no 1 in the artist album chart the follow-up moves up 40 places to no 2 and in doing so replaces vol 1 which drops 2 to 4. The arrival of Imagine and True Colours means that the show has now produced 20 Top 50 hit singles in just 14 weeks with between 5 and 7 hits in each of the last 10 weeks (prior to that it was just 1 entry - Don't Stop Believin'. Ranked by peak position here are the 20 along with their weekly positons

I can't believe that 'Cheltenham' made the top 20. It's basically a cover of 'Downtown' with different lyrics and some Irish jockeys provide erm..."vocals" for the song.

Dear god... NO! We haven't had one decent No.1 this year, but this would just be taking the p***.

How on Earth are Boyzone No.1? I just don't get where all these physicals are coming from, hardly any shop in Cork sells them anymore, and the ones that do have them demoted to a tiny little patch near the checkout with scarecely any recent cd's. So I really don't understand how Jedward managed to be No.1 last week when they were No.15 on the download chart.

I understand how Jedward got number 1 and are still holding up high, a friend of mine works in x tra vision where i live and he told me the phyisicals for Jedward are flying out the door, they have to keep re ordering it as its selling out the whole time, at €4.95 which is i tink is very expensive for 1 song and an instrumental i didnt think it would sell that well but kids are obviously huge into them.

I didnt see any Boyzone cd single in xtra vision but then again i didnt look hard, jedward was different as it was on the counter, but i think xtra vision only stock kinda one off speciel cd singles because recently jedward and helping haiti are the only cd singles i saw in stock.

Boyzone were probably helped by a high profile appearance on the Late Late Show on Friday 12th March.
