And just to add, if there actually IS still a recession, then why doesn't Brown put that £300m towards creating more jobs for those who claim benefits, to buy their own things? Oh wait, I forgot they had no intention to work so he'd still be throwing the money away... maybe he CAN treat working-class taxpayers who work damn hard for their money that goes to other things such as bills and taxes to something, such as more public amenties they can use like you said?

Yeah, because it's really that easy to just create 3m jobs.

I don't necessarily agree with this proposal for free laptops, but the implication that ALL people on benefits just can't be arsed to get a job is off.

Did I not say this?...

I'm not saying all people on benefits are capable of working as I know for a fact that some aren't due to problems in which they can't control.
It's hard for most of us to know what it's like to not have these things, I don't really know anyone who doesn't have access to a computer/laptop, it must be hard being one of the only people without one. Some people just can't get higher paid jobs and I suppose they deserve access to the internet?
you cant have what you cant afford, you cut your cloth according to what you can afford...

Try telling that to a 14 year-old Rob who wants £100 trainers or PSP or Blackberry! :(

I would say the TRUE unemployment total is about 500,000 , some depressed ex industrial towns in Wales and the north there is probably less vacancies etc but there is no excuse for the majority of benefit claimants not to be in work

There is $h!tloads of work and vacancies out there just that the majority of claimants have ideas above their station and would rather ponce off the state than do a menial job

Tell them to go get a paper round or knock on houses offering to wash cars which is the sort of thing I was doing at 14

Mine says she can't or her studies may suffer!!!

You said "some", implying most on benefits are able to get jobs, when this isn't the case.

There is a word that you can use to her Chris

First letter is N and the second letter is O

She might stamp her feet and say she hates you but she will thank you in the long run

How do you know it is not the case Danny ?

Sure someone in an ex mining village in South Wales has some sort of excuse to be out of work but someone in London or the prosperous home counties has no excuse not to be in work other than suffering from idle-itis

Children in low income homes are at a huge disadvantage compared with their better-off peers. This scheme is an attempt to do something about it. Maybe it won't work but it has to be worth a try.

Literacy and numeracy among kids from poor households is abysmal according to the education profession, rather than throw laptops at them that will largely be used viewing porn and watching You Tube videos would it not be better to spend money within the education system on improving literacy and numeracy ?

Yeah, and I think it's true that with some of them, their parents hardly give a $h!t whether they're learning or not.

If this scheme takes place and I hope it doesn't then there needs to be laws written into it that the laptop needs to be kept, what would stop someone being given a nice shiny new laptop by the government and then selling it on ebay or at a car boot sale to raise drug/booze money..

And also, I think a ban should be put on certain websites such as porn, burglaring tutorials, etc. etc. and only be used for the websites which they are being dished out for... educational ones. :cheer:

I agree with that, the typical chav that is going to get these laptops would have no interest in educational sites or bitesize, it would be used for listening to You Tube, downloading porn, learning how to create viruses etc

If the laptops were issued purely for educational purposes and to improve literacy then I would be more in favour but I doubt Brown is doing it for those reasons, a laptop where all bar educational and news sites were filtered and the chav not having administrator permissions would work maybe
