February 7, 201015 yr  but...it's a singing competition.... and the best singer, by a country mile, is Marcella Detroit  I'm shocked your parents are unaware of her, Hitstastic... she spent quite a long time in the charts in the 90s...as well as having one of the longest-running number ones of the whole decade. Shakespears Sister were fabulous... My parents are in their 60s. I'm the youngest of four children and there was a bit of a gap (12 years!!! ) between me and my older brother. Oddly, my dad (a big Frank Sinatra fan) knows of Scissor Sisters because he likes 'I Don't Feel Like Dancin' - must be the only UK no. 1 from the last decade my dad actually likes. I'm very much aware of Marcella from the days of Shakespears Sister. 'Stay' spent 8 weeks at no. 1 and still only sold about 600k by the time it left the chart. Edited February 7, 201015 yr by Hitstastic
February 7, 201015 yr  but...it's a singing competition.... and the best singer, by a country mile, is Marcella Detroit  So just because it's a singing competition we should ignore the way she performs it? It's not just about the singing, watch Katherine Jenkins when she performs, she has an incredible voice, and it looks so effortless when she sings. When Marcella sings it looks painful. I'm not knocking her voice, she has a spectacular one, but her performing skills need work.
February 8, 201015 yr Darius has had to perform alone twice when there should have been others on stage with him. The Toreador Song is always sung with a chorus ........Kym had a chorus for Brindisi on the same show. Last week's Non Piu Andrai is supposed to be sung to a young actor - Danny had a chorus and dancers and Bernie had dancers. Not having the other actor there makes the teasing nature of the piece very difficult to put over.
February 12, 201015 yr Thank goodness Bernie's through. I just knew that Darius would go through too ... even though he didn't really deserve it. It should have been Bernie V Marcella in the final. Bernie was superb though - just a few little wobbles for me - but enough to deserve her place in the final two. I seriously can't look at Bernie Nolan though without thinking of Jessica Fletcher in Murder She Wrote! Norma
February 12, 201015 yr What an awful performance from Meatloaf. :o Just shows this studio audience will give anything a standing ovation. Edited February 12, 201015 yr by truly talented
February 12, 201015 yr Gutted Kym went. She was my second favourite, behind Bernie. Bernie to win! :cheer:
February 12, 201015 yr Bernie has been consistently good. In fact ... getting better and better each week. Marcella did too (although she did have a blip midway for me). Bernie has to win ... if there's any justice. Having said that ... I really wish this show would have started with more than eight people! It seems no sooner has it started than its finished. Its also one of the few shows of its kind where the panel (with the exception of Meatloaf) seems to know what its talking about. The other one being 'Maestro'. Norma
February 13, 201015 yr Darius was performing a difficult, wordy aria that most professional opera singers stand still to deliver because there's virtually nowhere to breathe in the piece, yet he had to move around and sing. Despite that he didn't appear at all strained or out of breath. Now that aria is normally performed with just D's character, Don Giovanni, and his servant on stage and the TV producers add dancers! I'd have preferred a three way final between Bernie, Darius and Marcella.
February 13, 201015 yr it was a long week so I fell asleep before the show started  who left? I gather from postings here Kym went (very surprised)...PLEASE don't tell me the cringeworthy Darius made it through? He's shockingly bad... did Marcella leave?

February 13, 201015 yr  Darius in the final over Marcella AND Kym? Oh, the Grate British voting public non-surprise me once again. -_-
February 13, 201015 yr  Darius in the final over Marcella AND Kym? Oh, the Grate British voting public non-surprise me once again. -_- Agreed - the 'Great British Public Vote' strikes again.... are these the same GBP who voted for Westlife as Record of the Year all those times and for those laughable Brits winners decided by the public vote? Further proof - in competitions such as this - the public simply cannot be trusted. Marcella won this competition end of. And Kym was a close second with the Nolan bird a distant third.

You're right of course ... yes ... the same British Public who voted Angels the best song of the last 25 years five years ago, the ones who voted Could It Be Magic, How Deep Is Your Love, etc best singles ... the ones who are keeping Dr Hilary in on Dancing on Ice. Great isn't it? You're right about Marcella ... totally wrong about Kym ... she was well dodgy on Pie (pie, pie?) Jesu last night (although I've loved all her previous performances) ... but she was better than Darius. My rating was Marcella, Bernie, Kym, Darius. Norma I'm surprised how little I've commented in this thread considering I've watched this series. Bernie has been very good throughout and should win; Marcella has also been very good throughout (bar one week) and to be honest has technically and musically been the best vocally throughout but unfortunately she lacks performance abilities and has often been uncomfortable to watch where as my ears have told me otherwise. Kym deserved to go last night as I felt she had a relatively poor week especially when compared to Bernie. As for Darius ...... surely he is the ultimate UK reality TV contestant as Nigel Lythgoe perfectly summed up this week "We all love crazies who make good TV and love good singers. Darius fulfills both criteria!" Every time he performs he brings a smile to my face as he exudes that Tony Blair like insincere magnetic charisma that makes me love him because he is so unintentionally entertaining when he performs, yet once you've stopped mocking and laughing at him you realise that he is really really good. He definitely was IMHO the best male contestant in the series by a mile and is certainly better than the Meat Loaf performance last night.
February 13, 201015 yr After last night's performance Bernie sealed that spot good and proper in the final. BUT Marcella or Kym should have been in the final ahead of Darius. It's all very well having charm and performing skills, but when you are completely cocky and disrespectful to your mentors by learning a completely different song, you don't deserve a spot in the final.
February 13, 201015 yr I think Bernie/Darius was the only logical result last night. Bernie got unadulterated praise. Rolando underlined that Darius's aria was a particularly hard one and that on the whole he'd performed well, making one error at the end. Kym made a mess of Pie Jesu and you could tell from her body language afterwards that she knew it. Marcella sang her song well but she was in the bottom two last week and the person saved by the judges has always gone out in the following week. She'd have to have got a lot of extra votes to rise 2 places. Last week Darius was the only saved person who'd never been left in the last 3, so it was his turn. He could have been second or even first in the voting.

They've shafted Darius every week with song choice. He was right to stand up for himself. Try looking at the professionals singing the aria they chose for him on youtube. It's such a tongue twister that many get out of step with the orchestra or mix up the lyrics. BTW Bernie was out of step with the orchestra for 2 of the weeks. Not last night though.

But everyone else have had no problems with the aria's they were given, they just got on with no matter how difficult they were. He just took the attitude of it's too hard, sod it, and went off to do his own thing. You can guarantee a lot of the audience won't have a clue if Darius had gone wrong because it's a tongue twister becuase he owns the stage with his performing skills.
