January 16, 201015 yr Like russt68 said the best are Roisin Murphy, Goldfrapp, Bjork. Hard to choose one of them. I'd like to add Ladyhawke to the list even she released only one album (full of perfectly crafted songs). Even more: Ladyhawke plays all instruments in the studio, she writes her own songs, she's co-producer and has a great voice & personality. And let's not forget Natasha Khan (Bat For Lashes).
February 14, 201114 yr Do you really think that having writing credits on a song makes or breaks your credibility in the world of pop? Even though she was wrote several of her own songs. Britney Spears not only was a cultural phenomenon she also changed the world of pop music. If you deny that you are really just dense. And by saying this I'm not saying Britney is an acclaimed lyricist or producer. But to think she has nothing to do with the huge success of her own career, is stupid. Not needing these things to be a success in Pop is no reason to not have them. She doesn't have anything to do with the huge success of her own career. She was wholly pre-packaged and marketed to success by her label and nowadays isn't even in control of her own finances, let alone her own career. And really, her writing credits are rather dubious, to say the least.
February 14, 201114 yr There is only one Queen of Pop and that is Beyonce-her work ethic, versatility, creativity and the fact that she is a great singer, dancer and performer. She gives 100 percent and is great with her fans, I think maybe five years ago Britney was the Princess of Pop and Madonna has had her day but Beyonce rules. The problem with this sentiment is that "The Queen of Pop" is literally Madonna's nickname. It was given to her by the media and culture in general, just like Michael's "King of Pop" and Ozzy's "Prince of Darkness," it's not a title that female singers compete for. It's Madonna's title, full stop. And even if the title of "The Queen of Pop" were something you compete for, Madonna would still have it. She earned that title because of her all time impact and success, it doesn't matter if some other girl is bigger than her at the moment or for a few years. None of them are going to match, let alone exceed, her overall fame, success, and impact. Elaborating on the point of all time vs. at the moment when comparing two or more acts, longevity and consistency trump peak. Madonna released 'Hard Candy' 25 years, as in a full quarter century, after her self-titled debut was released and yet it sill moved 3.5 million globally. Mind you that was despite it not being a 4th quarter release, and the fact that she and Warner Bros. only put notable effort in to the first single. That first single was a global smash and then the 2nd single went Top 10 almost everywhere. And of course we all know how the subsequent tour fared. Edited February 14, 201114 yr by PDC1987
February 14, 201114 yr Author I agree about that Queen of Pop title is Madonna's. This thread is Queen of Music, though. Which is not Madonna's title.
February 14, 201114 yr I agree about that Queen of Pop title is Madonna's. This thread is Queen of Music, though. Which is not Madonna's title. Oh yes it is, lol. There is no female artist bigger than Madonna.
February 14, 201114 yr In terms of influence at the moment it has to be Lady GaGa but the all time Queen of Music has to be Madonna. Other brilliant female musicians, imo, include Laura Marling, Gwen Stefani, Joni Mitchell, Bjork and Lauryn Hill. Britney, Christina, Cheryl, Katy Perry, Rihanna etc are all good to brilliant but have a bit to go yet before they are considered in the same vein.
February 14, 201114 yr Past 20 years = Whitney, Mariah, Madonna Past 10 years = Beyonce, Pink, Britney Past 5 Years = GaGa, Kesha, Alexandra
February 15, 201114 yr Alexandra, Cheryl and Ke$ha queens of music of the last five years, really? We've only had one album from Alexandra, two critically panned ones from Cheryl and an album and a half from Ke$ha that could basically be split into three generic song categories.
February 15, 201114 yr I never backed up my choice, I reckon Mutya Buena is the Queen of Music for her distinctive and stunning vocals, for quite clearly being the driving force behind the Sugababes creatively. For her incredible range and stunning versatility. She is equally as brilliant at uptempo's as she is ballads. The woman has a new set of talons every 30minutes and at least 7 hair styles per single. Not to mention an entirely new look every era that was the Sugababes look for that era. She's an incredible singer and one of the best to ever come out of this country.
February 15, 201114 yr Oh yes it is, lol. There is no female artist bigger than Madonna. But hundreds that are better.
February 15, 201114 yr Not a fan Ben? What is your opinion on Madonna actually? Oddly enough she's one of the few artists that I don't really have a clear idea of what most people on here think of her...
February 17, 201114 yr the queen would have to be Adele, Amy Winehouse would be holding the crown for sure, but for the indescretions!
