It started :(

This is more likely to be an exception of the rule than the rule itself tbh. I don't see any more HUGE musical coming into the UK in the next ... hmmm... 3 years (at the very least, but this is still not quite likely). Not any big show have songs performed in there so you are really overreacting here.

But it'll then be any song performed on X-Factor, Dancing On Ice, by any housemates in Big Brother, any contestant in I'm a Celebrity etc.

In all seriousness i don't think any of these stand a tiny chance to at least be liked by 5 people/countries  Especially about CBB/BB.

I had been considering an obscure Dane Bowers album track from 2001 actually but I guess the mods would reject it on account of his re-found fame :(

:kink:

Are you really? It's not like he has or ever will have an AF

This has all gone so far that what I'm about to say will probably have the effect of a water pistol in a forest fire but I'll try anyway.

I am not one of the original few in this contest but I have been here since the pre-semi-final days and have seen it evolve, and as far as I've seen, the dreaded takeover of cheap and uninspired entries has been destroying the contest only in theory. Can anybody say that a few uninspired entries (and let's face it, we're not talking about Bad Boys, Fireflies, Bad Romance etc.) in a particular contest has made it a miserable contest? Personally I've still enjoyed the banter, the hyping of certain songs (and I mean on here not in the outside world) and yes I still discover new songs that I like each and every contest.

I understand the intent behind these new rules, but as far as I can see, it is rules and regulations like these that stand a much more real chance of destroying the contest. They will cause arguments, make hosts' jobs much more difficult, and I am pretty sure we'll spend as much time voting on proposed new rules or removals of rules as we will in the contest itself.

Yes, some contests are made slightly tedious by people entering songs which won't really prove anything, but I'd much rather have that than argument, grey areas and logistical nightmares. OK so the winner was quite predictable last time but the majority of people in the contest agreed that it was the highest quality final in a very long time, and I'm sure they enjoyed listening to the songs and making new discoveries. It's got to the point where a few great past winners and other classics would not be allowed in the contest today!

Basicaly, in reality, I think increased red tape and regulations and ongoing debate about these pose a far worse threat to the long term future of the contest than cheap entries.

After some contemplation, and as a Glee fanatic myself, I've decided it doesn't really pose much of a risk. The symbolism of picking out a show is far more damaging than any result that would come from Glee would be, and it's definitely not worth a blanket ban (if Don't Stop Believin' got third, I don't imagine anything else CURRENTLY about could come close in all honesty). Any new releases when the second half of the season comes in April can easily be dealt with using the ban list...

Right, seeing as there's been a lot of worry over what effect this could have, I'm going to go through the last few contests to find out which entries would likely have been affected...these songs have been bolded.

XXII's results aren't to hand, but off the top of my head Ellie and Glee would've been excluded? Hollywood would've obv been out of the latest one.

HENCE, looking at this list, what are you all worried about? Aside from Bev, I don't really see much cause for complaint.

I would have won XVI :drama:

Well, there's no accounting for taste :kink:

wow, I hadn't recalled quite how completely uninspired XVI had been - the top 4 all ban worthy  it's when I had my biggest inspiration (in my opinion) too with I'm Going For Your Brother :o would have loved that to have come higher!

Music Everywhere would have won :snif:

not to throw a spanner in the works, but with all of these new songs banned, as soon as the inevitable flood of ESC rejects comes through in the next 3 or 4 months I expect there will be a call for a lot of these to be banned too - Stay The Night for example already had a substantial fanbase/internet following before it was sent to BJSC...so don't be surprised when there is call for the ESC rejects to be re-banned again, especially those that are obviously going to do well (which clearly wasn't the case with Martina/Caroline Af Ugglas)

HENCE, looking at this list, what are you all worried about? Aside from Bev, I don't really see much cause for complaint.

Personally, the inevitable arguments, debates and nitpicking, rather than the songs that now can't be sent.

Looking at that list, what are you worried about?!

The fact that we've had the threat of several private withdrawals if this situation continues? :P People are generally seeing the flocking to the high-profile cheapies as sullying what seems to be a general upward trend in song quality - which I think has been evidenced by the fact that this thread hasn't turned into World War III as I thought it would

Given that we've only had two bona fide successes (to my memory) in Butterflies and Stay The Night (the latter of which shocked everyone by doing so well :P), I don't think it's a huge problem, although one we're scanning...generally though, given that not many participants pay a great deal of attention to the pre-selections (even I'm trying to force myself to concentrate!) I don't think we're going to have many that are so hyped into victory that wars ensue over the selection and everyone declares the contest over :P

As I said though, we'll keep an eye out in case anything does come up along those lines...

Another point, I think that needs to be resolved before BJSC_TwentyFour starts is the banned list:

I personally think the Mods should come up with a list of artists/songs that are due to imminently leak and ban them in advance, as I think that would be much much better than someone nominating X artist - song only to then find out the Mods have banned it after that country have suggested it as their entry.

Plus I like the concept of the poacher trying to outwit the gamekeeper.

We already have that in place Rich :P

Well I'm only thinking back to my Tinchy Stryder ft Amelle entry which I grabbed when I was on holiday the day an excited Tinchy went into the Radio 1 Xtra studio (I still can't forget that morning being in my hairdressers when that happened on the Radio) and played it 7/8 weeks in advance of its single release (it only charted the week ending 15/08/2009 two weeks after Kanye West ft Mr Hudson by the way); and a month before the song & video was playlisted; so that I nominated it when I came home that morning before most of you knew it was out there (and got annoyed) .

I'm still annoyed that Bev is banned. How else am I meant to get people to pay attention to her?! That's the reason I joined this contest. Sad times. I basically agree with Peter, but I'm outnumbered.

I think this ban is so much more than just that list of highlighted songs. It'll also create a pretense of people being cautious to send songs that might be added to the Radio 1 playlist, but eventually aren't. MPHO with "Box N Locks" is an example, I actually think that may have been banned in the end. (I can't remember when Radio 1 added it) Going back, I'd be surprised if Lewis sent it as it was on the release schedule and ended up being played by Radio 1. The risk of if happening again might be too much now. Let's use another example. If Sabrina Washington - "OMG" leaks in time, I wouldn't be sure whether to send it. Who can tell if Radio 1 will support it? It's on the release schedule, but it's not clear whether they'll play it. Yes, it could be an exception, but we can't be making too many of those or it looks a bit dictatorial.

I dunno, I'm just bored of this at the moment. It seems the rules are bent to suit the people making them. A year ago it was "don't ban Eurovision NF rejects! people should be able to enter whatever they like most at the time! :(" and now it's "well, actually, you can't send anything from the Radio 1 Playlist, MTV Hits Playlist, current albums of artists with an AF, the iTunes top 40 or Billboard chart. oh and any other songs we deem inappropriate." -_-

I love how when it's my turn to host, we always have a big change. VII - two semi finals for the first time. XV - Eurovision NF drama, last contest they were banned. XXIV - the start of this new rule.

The reservation thread will open when I decide. :)

I know, it was put in bold as it would've in all likelihood been banlisted...IIRC it's only that, Silly Boy and Say It which would've been banlisted at the time?

I am also quite annoyed that Bev is banned, but ultimately then going on to say 'all AFs except X, Y and Z are banned' would've been one exception too far, and pure cannon fodder to the opposition.

As I've said, people can't be counting on leeway :P
