1 1 The Village People - YMCA

Bought the single and loved it back then. A massive seller, sold over a million copies.

2 2 Ian And The Blockheads - Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick

Bought this too and this almost sold a million - it was 20,000 or so short.

3 3 Racey - Lay Your Love On Me

Very catchy but somehow annoying.

4 5 Earth, Wind And Fire - September

I loved this song, still do but somehow never got around to buying the single. Always reminds me of Christmas 1978 when I hear this song.

5 12 Olivia Newton-John - A Little More Love

Awful song

6 13 Paul Evans - Hello This Is Joannie

as was this, and this was very corny. Subtitled (The Telephone Answering song), the answering machine being a fairly new thing back then.

7 9 Chic - Le Freak

Bought this on 12" which i still have. One of my all time favourite songs

8 4 Elton John - Song For Guy

A song written as a tribute to someone EJ knew who had died in a motorbike accident. Very few lyrics and even then they don't kick in for a considerable length of time.

9 18 Funkadelic - One Nation Under A Groove

Great disco song, very funky indeed!

10 27 Driver 67 - Car 67

Driver 67 was Paul Phillips, the assistant editor of Record Business, a trade magazine that rivalled Music Week back then. This song was written as a joke and as a deliberate ploy to have a hit. Phillips used his contacts in radio to get them to play the song and it was soon in the charts. Awful song though.

11 14 Chaka Khan - I'm Every Woman

12 8 Barbra Streisand And Neil Diamond - You Don't Bring Me Flowers

13 16 Hot Chocolate - I'll Put You Together Again

14 10 The Bee Gees - Too Much Heaven

15 22 Barry White - Just The Way You Are

Bought this on 12" coloured vinyl. And it was white vinyl! Bought it not for the A side but the glorious B side, Your Sweetness Is My Weakness, a song that had flopped for BW a few months previously.

16 11 Sarah Brightman And Hot Gossip - I Lost My Heart To A Starship Trooper

My mother bought this - terrible.

17 6 The Barron Knights - A Taste Of Aggro

18 64 The Three Degrees - Woman In Love

My mother also bought this, on gold coloured 7" vinyl. Awful song. 1979 was the year of coloured vinyl and picture discs.

19 17 Heatwave - Always And Forever/Mind Blowing Decisions

20 24 Rocky Sharpe And The Replays - Rama Lama Ding Dong

21 30 Sally Oldfield - Mirrors

Mike's sister. Not bad, quite a reflective song.

22 19 Dollar - Shooting Star

23 35 The Shadows - Don't Cry For Me Argentina

24 23 The Clash - Tommy Gun

Bought this single. Still sounds good.

25 25 Mankind - Dr Who

Bought this too. As James Hamilton, the disco columnist in Record Mirror, said when reviewing the song it was a surprise that no-one had ever tried to do a disco version of it beforehand given the nature of the music.

26 29 Billy Joel - My Life

Bought the 52nd Street album from which this was taken.

27 66 Dan Hartman - This Is It

28 32 Anne Murray - You Needed Me

I bought a best of by her from amazon just before Christmas!

29 21 Leo Sayer - Raining In My Heart

30 31 Shalamar - Take That To The Bank

Bought this, loved the song and I agree with Mushy, it's one of their best. My favourite by them is Make That Move from 1981.

31 36 Barry Manilow - Could It Be Magic

32 7 Boney M - Mary's Boy Child

Bought this as a Christmas present the previous month for my mum. Hated the song.

33 26 Musique - In The Bush

Bought this on 12" - excellent disco song.

34 34 Third World - Cool Meditation

Good song and one that reminds me of January 1979 and all the snow we had then. I just remember thinking that outside it was anything but cool!

35 20 Rod Stewart - Da Ya Think I'm Sexy?

36 52 Doll - Desire Me

37 39 Sylvester - Dance (Disco Heat)

Bought this and also had his previous single. I think I prefer this one now though back then I preferred Mighty Real.

38 35 Phoebe Snow - Every Night

Another song that reminds me of January 1979. My local ILR station was always playing this.

39 33 London Symphony Orchestra - Theme From 'superman'

40 70 Chanson - Don't Hold Back

41 58 Cerrone - Je Suis Music

42 37 Rachel Sweet - BABY

I bought this but she did have a slightly annoying nasalised voice.

43 ne Leif Garrett - I Was Made For Dancin'

My sister bought this. Can it get any worse? One of the worst singles of 1979.

44 55 Roy Ayers And Wayne Henderson - Heat Of The Beat

45 15 John Travolta - Greased Lightning

46 ne Dr Feelgood - Milk And Alcohol

47 38 Dan Hartman - Instant Replay

I eventually got to own this single though not until 1985 when it was the B side of I Can Dream About You.

48 ne Instant Funk - Got My Mind Made Up

Instant Funk had already made the charts months earlier in an uncredited role providing the backing music for Evelyn "Champagne" King's glorious single "Shame". This song wasn't too bad.

49 47 Gerard Kenny - New York, New York

50 46 Ranhi Harris And FLO - Six Million Steps (West Runs South)
