thats exactly the point i was trying to make earlier in the post - it is bad for the uk charts to be dominated by mtv airplay because they will only play songs with good videos and 'beautiful' people singing in them!! it simply means rihanna, britney, jls and co will constantlyt have top 40 hits no matter what the song is - take a look at songs which climb the top 40 before release once the video airplay kicks in they rise like mad - for example rihanna and jls current singles!!

Rihanna's 'Rude Boy' is already 14 and the video hasn't premiered yet...yes, the video will surely push it even higher, but you can't say it's doing well due to the video at this moment, because at the moment there is no video!

^^my comment is a generalised comment - it doesn't mean it will be the case for EVERY new song by the artists mentioned - even people who dont like rihanna/her type of music probably liked the song 'umbrella' because like it or not it is a noughties classic.sorry for the misunderstanding!!
btw how has hotchip jumped into the top 40 all of a sudden?

65. Use Somebody - Kings of Leon

67. Sex On Fire - Kings of Leon

198. Sex On Fire - Kings of Leon

These two are still INSANELY high given that they've both been charting constantly in the top 100 since they were first made available (apart from one blip week for US) 71 and 73 weeks ago respectively...

But has Use Somebody been used somewhere () or has it re-overtaken on its own accord? The album version of SOF will probably mean SOF is still ahead combined though.

Use Somebody was the "record of the year" at the Grammy Awards so that might be the cause possibly

Correct, thank you ^_^

Hopefully Leona Lewis' Footprints In The Sand will re-enter the top 100 after a pretty good American Idol performance.

Glad to see I Got You rising too. :)

R.E.M's Everybody Hurts is at 73. Hope this does better than Simon Cowell's

Highly doubtful as it's pre-order figures stand at over 1,000,000 copies. And that's just pre-orders! Think about how much it's going to sell in the first week, in total! There's no denying that this single is going to be huge.

There's always hope

It may be huge, but it will be $h!te, as most charity single are. I think the only x factor, pop idol etc song or charity single i've heard that was ok was Shayne Ward's. That one was decent. It can be said that naturally charity singles or reality tv singles are usually always $h!t.

That's spin. It's hype also to big up a single that might flop like Jedward.

They are not pre-orders to the customer. They are pre-orders from the label in preperation of sales.

Iirc, Gareth Gates 'Unchained Melody' had pre-orders of 1.3 million copies. It sold 800k in its first week and a further 500k during the rest of its time in the chart.

No doubt Helping Haiti will be a massive selling single and probably will shift over one million copies.

that is not pre-orders that is what will be sent out to shops, amazon ect

From Yahoo Blogs:

According to pre-order figures, more than a million copies will be sold when it is released on Sunday, with both Amazon and HMV reporting an extraordinary response. "This single will dominate the charts in the weeks ahead as the biggest release of the past ten years," said HMV spokesperson Gennaro Castaldo.

The last single to sell over a million copies was Comic Relief fundraiser ‘Is This The Way To Amarillo' in 2005. Meanwhile, Band Aid's ‘Do They Know It's Christmas?' shifted a whopping 3.5 million in 1984. So can ‘Everybody Hurts' break that record? With acclaimed director Joseph Kahn currently putting the finishing touches to a video starring all the big names, anything is possible.
