Yes, yes, we know, you hate Dot.

Actually the one thing EE has consistently got RIGHT this year is the comedy. Since Bryan Kirkwood took over they've found a great balance of character-true comedy that compliments the grittier storylines, whereas certain big reveals and pay off episodes have been disappointing given how high expectations were.

I think you personally are never going to find it funny and I don't understand that but I respect it. Each to their own. Personally I find Corrie depressing because everybody in it is so low-rent (Carla Connor aside, someone needs to ship her into EastEnders pronto).

This is where it is great to agree to disagree. For you ... EE manages it's comedy divinely ... whereas to me ... it is very forced. Corrie on the other hand .. does it effortlessly ... without insulting its viewers by going via the slapstick route that EE tends to take.

I have to hand it to EE however ... when it does 'drama' it takes it to the melodramatic limits (hence garnering all the plaudits). At the end of the day though ... it is very 'Dallas and Dynasty' without the shoulder pads!

Corrie wins hands-down when it comes to run-of-the-mill everyday life and comedy rolled into one. I think the mistake it makes is thinking that eveyone is on its intellectual wavelength (akin I suppose to superior comedy shows like The Office, The Royle Family, Early Doors, etc) when most people are satisfied with 'in-yer-face' slapstick ... of the kind Laurel and Hardy supplied .... 75 years earlier.

I think it's slightly patronising to suggest not everybody is intelligent enough to GET Corrie humour (!) - especially when most of it is pretty obvious and NORTHERN.

i think i'm gonna watch the omnibus tomorrow so i can semi catch up before the whole train crash and live episode thing next week. looks amazing
One week of eventful episodes does not claim a whole year I am AFRAID. EastEnders has had the live, high Masood drama, a STAX two hander and a considerable improvement in everyday episodes.

HMPH.

No, but Eastenders, good as it is, HASN'T been on absolute top form for the entire duration of the year. Since the Billie thing died down, I've been finding it's becoming a bit of a chore to watch through.

Even though all three are thoroughly watchable characters, the Stacey/Ryan/Janine triangle isn't doing anything for me right down, because it's all so predictable and frankly none of them are deserving of a happy ending from it all. I know I SHOULD be rooting for Stacey, but it's difficult to right now because she's being a bit of a teasing mare who needs to decide one way or another what she wants, rather than shagging Ryan one episode to hating his guts the next. Likewise the Ian/Jane/Glenda/Mas/Zainab thing is just a MESS.

Corrie hasn't exactly had a stellar year, but it HAS had it's plus points. Mary in particular is FANTASTIC, and Becky/Steve are one of the best couplings in soap at the moment.

With regards to the upcoming week, the big strength is that it's including pretty much the ENTIRE cast and bringing together all the ongoing plots of the moment, which is something I don't think Eastenders really achieved with either the live episode OR their own "disaster" stunt with the Vic fire which ultimately ONLY served to fuel Peggy's departure.

Now don't get me wrong, I'm no Corrie loon, far from it. My loyalty is usually to EE, but I do think that so long as Corrie fulfils all the hype and promise, next week will be the most memorable "moment" of 2010 in the soap world. And yes, I include the EE live episode in that.

Whatever. I can't count the number of times though ... that EE has characters (usually females) in on a 'girlie' joke (that wasn't funny) and one sets the other off ... and the audience are supposed to find this funny? EE is more slapstick than most comedy programs. At times it reminds me of On The Buses and Love Thy Neighbour. Then again ... a lot of people thought they were funny.

Settling down to see Corrie smashed to bits by a tram :) Ah monday night :)
Noise of trams as Ken and Janice banter, noise of trams as Claire and Ashley say goodbye, noise of trams at the Websters, noise of trams as Fizz and John kiss, noise of trams as Ken walks up the street.

Excellent stuff so far.

Second part looks amazing, the tram crasg is worth waiting for!!!!!

I'm enjoying this first episode! Linus Roache is the spitting image of his dad at the same age. I love Philip Lowrie (Dennis Tanner) and the guy who's playing Ken's brother (he was in Brookside years later ... can't think of his name at the moment.)

I barely ever watch Corrie was WOW - that was a great episode and, dare I say, much better than tonight's edition of EastEnders! I'm glad that Charlotte's a goner though, very annoying whenever I've seen her in it! I hope Rita's not dead though.

I don't usually watch Corination Street.....but I have a fair idea of the storyline since my mum has it on all the time.

Poor Rita, they wouldn't kill Rita would they? How horrible

and poor Molly too

They might still be alive....it could be someone else that dies. It was really shocking though....it was like something out of Final Destination except less silly and random.

Also I loved the whole fast paced scene switching leading up to the disaster.

Oh, I agree Sabre, those last few minutes were superb!

Anyway, my bets for the remaining three deaths are Molly, Rita () and I'm not sure on the fourth - Ashley maybe?

Ashley and Molly are confirmed.

The John and Charlotte story line got a bit ridiculous and was really unrealistic. Who on Earth would steal someone elses identity to teach at a school! Only Principal Skinner kind of got away with it.
