yeah, sorry bout that  thought i'd get away with it as it was nine years ago. Was gonna do 2003, but decided against it

This is not a good chart, I found 5 tracks I like.

9. Usher - Pop Ya Collar

14. Safri Duo - Played-A-Live

15. Rui Da Silva ft Cassandra - Touch Me

32. Amira - My Desire

35. Misteeq - Why

Never listened to much chart stuff around this time so I don't know much of this....

2. Wheatus - Teenage Dirtbag....this was alright

8. Toploader - Dancing In The Moonlight....overplayed tripe

22. Eminem - Stan :)

25. Ash - Shining Light....This was a good track

30. Bob The Builder - Can We Fix It :w00t:

31. Shaggy ft Rikrok - It Wasn't Me

My thoughts ....

1. Atomic Kitten - Whole Again - A great song penned by OMD's Andy McCluskey, to be fair he admitted he ripped off the Australian #2 hit Graduation (Friends Forever).

2. Wheatus - Teenage Dirtbag - A great pop song which tells a story.

3. Papa Roach - Last Resort - Proto Emo track. Not that bad.

4. Limp Bizkit - Rollin' - Die die die die die.

5. Fun Lovin' Criminals - Loco - An unremarkable track that sold well as it featured the late great Kirsty MacColl on backing vocals

6. Mya - Case Of The Ex - So so urban pop track.

7. Joe ft Mystikal - Stutter - Awful.

8. Toploader - Dancing In The Moonlight - I hate this turgid song.

9. Usher - Pop Ya Collar - Annoying MJ wannabe. Not very good track.

10. U2 - Stuck In A Moment You Can't Get Out Of - For me they perfected this song on their follow up album with Sometimes You Can't Make It On Your Own.

18. Starsailor - Fever

22. Eminem - Stan

25. Ash - Shining Light

30. Bob The Builder - Can We Fix It - Let's all praise the (spawn of Louie Walsh & Simon Cowell) Westlife slayer which subsequently stopped them bettering The Beatles run of consecutive UK#1 hits. Written by the lead singer from Terrorvision.

37. Leann Rimes - Can't Fight The Moonlight

38. S Club 7 - Never Had A Dream Come True

Not a very good chart at all!

maybe its time to re-think the boundaries. 03 was 7 years ago now ... y2k was a conveiniant boundary to set and that was set in 07.... or 8...lol. but many of the artists going in 03 and musical styles are still contemporary today so isnt really retro...

thoughts anyone?

Move the retro cut-point with each year, I think anything up to the end of 2001 is apt now that we are in 2010. There are my thoughts anyway.

It's a difficult one to call. Pre 2000 was, and still is, a convenient boundary but for many Buzzjack posters even 2005 is now positively retro and for some posters who may want to talk about music and events from early last decade they probably may not feel they'll get many responses elsewhere on Buzzjack.. Perhaps we should pick an event rather than a specific year as the starting point for a cut off date - how about pre Pop Idol / X Factor et al? That would give us late 2001 as a cut off point (Pop Idol began on 5 October 2001 with the final in February 2002). So perhaps just everything prior to 2002?

There's loads of singles in this top 40 chart that I can't recall even hearing, such was the turnover of the chart by 2001 that missing a week or two of the top 40 could mean never hearing a fair few of the songs in the top 40.

1. Atomic Kitten - Whole Again

They apparently came within 24 hours of being dropped by their label prior to the release of this single and it was a last minute plea by Andy McCluskey to give the band one last chance that saw this single get a release. It not only entered the chart at number one but managed to increase its sales for each of the three subsequent weeks it spent at number one - possibly a unique achievement. Its sales at number 1 were 69,285 - 85,295 - 101,919 - 113,090. Replaced by Shaggy's "It Wasn't Me" at number one it dropped to #2 on sales of 110,000. It has now sold 960,000 copies in total.

2. Wheatus - Teenage Dirtbag

Geeky song but quite good fun.

3. Papa Roach - Last Resort

I liked this one. Radio 1 had to play a heavily censored version.

4. Limp Bizkit - Rollin'

The video was famously shot at the top of one of the Twin Towers - apparently the last one to be shot there before the events of September 11. On the strength of this single I bought the album. Played it once and decided it was dreadful. My excuse for buying it is that I'd had an afternoon drinking session and bought it on impulse!

6. Mya - Case Of The Ex

Good song, I have it on a Now album.

8. Toploader - Dancing In The Moonlight

Jamie Oliver is to thank / blame for this single, his Christmas 2000 adverts for Sainsburys helped this single achieve a decent chart run for this single and one which bucked the trend of the time as this single reversed its initial fall down the chart to climb the chart for many weeks to reach its peak position.

12. Planet Funk - Chase The Sun

Loved this song.

15. Rui Da Silva ft Cassandra - Touch Me

Spandau Ballet took out an injunction to remove the Chant No 1 bits but it deservedly still reached number 1

16. Spooks - Things I've Seen

Good, moody record

17. Westlife - What Makes A Man

We have one thing to thank Bob The Builder for - Can We Fix It kept this from the top and brought to an end Westlife's attempts to even start to think about dominating the Christmas number one.

22. Eminem - Stan

I remember when Radio 1 first playlisted this that the playing of the song was preceded by an advisory warning to listeners! Excellent song and Dido's finest moment!

31. Shaggy ft Rikrok - It Wasn't Me

Charting on import prior to its UK release.

i think the problem with that is that many might not know exactly when the pop idol era began.. i dont!

what i dont want is for retro to be swamped by threads that although relate to 'oldies' (5 - 10 years) arnt really pertainent as they could refer to very similar sounds around today. after all, many tracks from 8 years ago wouldnt sound dated today... retro has 50 years to chose from, id sooner attract convo about REAL retro as opposed to recent retro.

im leaning towards keeping the 'cut off date' as y2k, but relaxing the boundary if the subject matter isnt akin to todays music... ie girls aloud, sugababes etc.

keep thoughts coming guys! :)

i think it should stay at 2000. anything this century isnt really retro imo

Besides there are loads of forums on here where people can talk about sugababes will young atomic kitten etc, they dont this one aswell.

Hello

I have just been reading the previous discussion and even though the following line of questioning will not be relevant to the chart posted at the beginning, I think it might be best to ask now whilst you are discussing timeframes in relation to the ‘period of interest’.

Does anybody else know of a website called “Remember The Eighties”? I think that there might be a few people here who could be frequent users of the site or may have bought their book. If you have seen the site in question then you will know that it is all about artists of the 1980s, but rather than focusing just on the output of the 1980s, there will also be updates about their current tours and recording projects.

Now Howard Jones has just released a new album and it is supposed to be very good, getting ‘4 stars out of 5’ in one review that I saw. Even so, I doubt that most of the teenagers using this site would be interested in Howard Jones [though some of the older students may have had a dance to “New Song” whilst being drunk over the last few weeks] and therefore I was wondering, if a new album by an artist such as Jones needed to be discussed, would it be best to do so in here, even though it would only have been recorded and released recently?

modern releases by artists seen as 'retro' are sometimes discussed here, as long as its in context to retro by say comparing material then its ok. russt has a thread on alison moyets new album, trouble is no one really responded .

i think this is where the true 'retro cut off ' is... its more about context. i think if a retro chart from say 02 was posted then referances to retro influences could be accepted whilst referances to the first girls aloud track wouldnt.

i guess im making it a grey area, but i think by using our brains and posting relevant retro info then its ok.

i think it should stay at 2000. anything this century isnt really retro imo

i have alot of sympathy for this, it makes sense to us older posters, however buzzjacks membership is mainly under 25, 15 ten years ago ... so their knowlege of earlier music in most cases wouldnt be that great. (i know there are exceptions) plus many older buggers simply dont come on this site for retro...

id like this forum to be thriving, but the facts are that generally retro isnt popular, and various eras have their own dedicated sites. many older fans stuck in 'their era' dont want to discuss/share outside their chosen patch.

Possibly the worst-ever chart we've had listed here - completely dreadful, start to finish..... and it's headed by Britain's worst EVER girlband with one of the limpest, weediest number ones of all time..... truly vile.

I agree. I fail to understand why this is always cited as a "great" pop song. I think it's awful and never got why it was so successful and yes they are probably the worse girl band in recent memory, not to mention being the springboard for Kelly bleedin' Katona!!

15. Rui Da Silva ft Cassandra - Touch Me

This sticks out like a sore thumb for me. Intoxicating dance track that is now almost ten years old and still sounds remarkably fresh and original. Rui Da Silva, did you know, is the only Portuguese act to crack the UK charts, never mind have a number one hit!

Wasn't Kadoc, of 'Night Train' fame, Portuguese, too? Considering it's a country of beautiful music, how odd that there's so few international acts... the only one I can think of now is Mariza..... who's simply incredible.

uk/spanish according to the guiness book. 3 minor hits in 96/7
