Taio Cruz Cruises To Record No. 1 Jump on Hot 100

March 10, 2010 10:00 EST

British newcomer Taio Cruz sets the record for largest jump to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 by an act with its first charting single as "Break Your Heart," featuring Ludacris, soars 53-1. The Hot 100 will be updated in its entirety Thursday (Mar. 11) morning.

"Heart" shifts 273,000 downloads in its first full week of availability, according to Nielsen SoundScan, to also claim the No. 1 slot on Digital Songs. Last week, the track moved 31,000 in a partial sales frame (approximately three days), which prompted its Hot 100 entry.

The song, which also topped the U.K. singles chart when it debuted at No. 1 in September, is growing rapidly in airplay, climbing 70-53 (up 21%) on Radio Songs.

The record for largest climb to No. 1 on the Hot 100 by an artist's premiere single had belonged to Kelly Clarkson's "American Idol" victory song, "A Moment Like This," which flew 52-1 on the chart dated Oct. 5, 2002.

Clarkson does retain the mark for biggest jump to No. 1 among all tracks with "My Life Would Suck Without You," which nearly leapt the entire chart length (97-1) just over a year ago (Feb. 7, 2009).

Notice they said "first charting single", as he has released other tracks to iTunes before, but I guess this is the first to make an impression on the charts.

I'm loving that Leona, James Blunt, Coldplay, Jay Sean and Taio Cruz have all topped the US charts over the past few years - plus Natasha Bedingfield, Amy Winehouse and Duffy having success. I've probably missed loads out too.

It's about bloody time the British acts started to dominate the US charts like they did back in the 80s. Especially when you consider the amount of US crap that hit no. 1 over the last decade. ** shudders **

EDIT; Yes, one could argue that James Blunt is as bad, if not worse than 'Laffy Taffy' but personally I'd rather listen to 'You're Beautiful' on repeat for 24 hours than listen to 'Laffy Taffy' just once. :)

YES MORE HATE FOR LAFFY TAFFY, the single most embarrassing single to ever top Billboard. Followed closely by This is Why I'm Hot. I'm not talking about taste or opinion or preference... those songs go BEYOND, they are universally, wholly, completely, absolutely terrible.

...oh, and congrats to Taio Cruz, totally unexpected. I'm guessing I'm one of the few who actually likes Ludacris on the song. But I think if the record companies stick rappers on there just to add credibility, they are wrong - the success of Jason Derulo, Iyaz, and Chris Brown's Forever show that you don't need a guest rapper to get airplay.

Totally agree. Add 'Soulja Boy (Crank That)' to the list and you have the makings of a tracklist from hell!!!

The UK version was without Ludacris wasn't it? If Ludacris was added, was it to help Taio break America?

Yes, and probably ^_^

Yes, and probably ^_^

Shame he couldn't have done it on his own :( Still, its a great acheivement. I have always liked Taio - I Can Be is his best song imo though.

'Break Your Heart' is his best but they're all KINDA GOOD.

hopefully 'Break your heart' will remain number 1 this week too in the BB top 100.
