Hi Folks,

I have started a face book page to rant away about the shocking decisions record compnaies have made in the past regarding their artists. Bad single choices - lack of promotion - neglected etc

Come along and join and help get my page up and running!

Address to follow shortly

Cheers

Ross

A bang on suggestion. But if we were listing all the shocking decisions made by record companies we'd be here for eternity wouldn't we? That's what they've always done and what they'll continue to do. Putting out records is a secondary concern.

Two examples in question:

The common plan of having two big singles off an album, then a third single which is completly ignored in favour of the previous. (EG - Little Boots - "Earthquake", Kylie Minogue - "The One", The Killers - "This is the world that we live in" and "Dustland Fairytale" etc)

Deluxe/re-release editions of albums - What is wrong with making a new album?

I am disgusted at the way record companies are so bias against music from mainland Europe.

There is so much good stuff out there it only needs releasing and promoting. Yet they favour much of the US rubbish.

Before anyone starts on about language problems, well over 50% of it is recorded in English.

Acts such as Within Temptation, HIM, Scooter, Stanfour, Milow, Charlie Winston, Tokio Hotel, Kane, Anouk, Laura Jansen, Tom Dice, Milk Inc. Bob Taylor, Peter Luts and many more...

Sugababes in genreal?

This.

Jamelia, Sophie Ellis-Bextor & Beverley Knight's past labels (current still in Sophie's case)

Mariah Carey's label

I couldn't agree more. I can think of at least 10 or 15 songs currently smashing in Europe that could be huge here with Radio 1 support, half of last year's #1's in Germany for a start...

Sophie Ellis-Bextor's label have been nothing but brilliant Simon. They've given her four albums (thus far) despite the fact that only one was a real success, she got a really expensive video for Today The Sun despite the previous single tanking, she's given funding for recording sessions with as many people as she likes. I could go on. She's been VERY lucky to have a label who adore her and won't let her go despite the fact that her last real success was eight years ago.

You have to admit though, the way they handled TTLF was a real disaster. :( It was pure hell to watch happen from a fan's point of view.

Still, here's hoping they get this one right. They've made a good start so far.

Mariah Carey's label

I'm not a Mariah fan but making all her songs in this era download only is just stupid. I'd imagine she'd sell well on physicals as she's been releasing records and albums for about 20 years now.

And don't get me started on the mess that was 'Obsessed.' I reckon it definitely would have gone top 5, possibly #1 if it had decent airplay. But the release? What the hell? The record company didn't release the original as the remix was released but the remix was on iTunes for about 4 days, removed for 3 weeks, added for 2 days, removed again.

And then they digitally release 'I Wanna Know What Love Is' instead which just scraped the top 20 after the X Factor performance.

I'm also not very pleased about Pixie's label turning her into a ballad machine. So, it may sell this album but is it really going to set her up well for the next album?

Just as with Paloma's label, they seem to just be caring about the album, and not the singles. Cry Me Out appealed to an older market so may've done better on physicals. Same with Paloma, making her singles download only doesn't really promote them or the album too much anyway. I can't help feeling like Paloma gets neglected a bit by her label.

That's a little overdramatic. She's done 2 uptempos and 2 ballads. It's hardly Westlife territory.

And let's not forget that Cry Me Out sold pretty much aswell as Boys And Girls and Mama Do, and gave her album a nice big boost.

And I'd also say Gravity is her best singles so far.

It was a bit . I was more implying that they are releasing 3 ballads in a row (My Love is the next) which I personally am not sure that it would benefit her or her label in the long run.

Rihanna's label have done a terrible job with Rated R era. Even though I love Russian Roulette it shouldn't have been the first single.

I'd say Pixie is an example of someones who's being managed very well not very baddly

The Saturdays label are doing a fairly allright job of it I suppose. I ranted a bit about how useless they were when Wordshaker bombed but up until the release of Forever Is Over everything was peachy perfect

Poor Sugababes have always been a bit all over the place with their record label/management havent they?

Well the US special relationship with the UK has thawed, so who knows we may start becoming pro-Europe and record companies take note of that?

The thing is, the stuff we're getting from the US aside from a few acts is all this generic urban crap. I think people need to realise it's NOT the only genre.

Epic (Sony Music Entertainment) is really bad - see Shakira's "She Wolf" for why. They only seem to promote like the first single and then the album and then forget that their artists are still releasing stuff.

Also all of Universal Records are starting to annoy me with those god awful compilation CDs released ever week - it's either a chavy "Clubland" CD or a very boring "My Songs" CD filled with songs that got played to death with months ago.

If she doesn't want to be turned into a 'ballad machine' then she shouldn't put so many on her album. However as they keep releasing them then I assume she's not against that....
