In the current climate the only act I can see challenging Oasis' sales in a week is (as Pablo Honey suggested) a Take That / Robbie reunion album .... especially if it released in November (2011) preceded by a single that is as good as Angels meets Back For Good meets Feel meets Rule The World; off the back of a reunion documentary and Audience With ... show on ITV on a weekend just after an episode of the X-Factor.

Hand on heart ... I honestly do not see (if it happens) this Robbie / TT collaboration doing anywhere near as much business as people seem to think it will. It'll do well ... but it won't be smashing any records. It think they're both in their twilight years now ... this collaboration just reeks of desperation ... from both sides.

If Susan Boyle couldn't do it (aka the most hyped album of the last ten years, surely?) then nobody can
Unfortunately I can see Girls Alouds comeback (that's if they do comeback) being really big. Maybe a posthumous MJ album comprising of all 'new' songs. The TT reunion like previously stated, Coldplay again maybe, I could see Oasis beating it if they comeback i a few years with an amazing album, KOL like previously stated, JLS' fanbase has grown so they could do well with their next album. TBH though they'd all need to be released in the X Factor season with an X Factor performance.

I don't see GA being a potential candidate at all - they do reasonably well in album sales, but they've never been million sellers, let alone selling a million in a single week or whatever.

Possibly!

Album sales have declined since then though I believe...

There are only a handful of Artists who could achieve numbers close to that, who have already been mentioned.

It may not be broken in the near future, but I'd never rule out beyond that!

Kylie Minogues new album? Lol. Okay I know it won't sell 700k but I think it will still do really well, and sell over a million altogether anyway.

Girls Aloud? Kylie Minogue? Those acts are big but most of their albums haven't sold 700k during their entire chart run, much less in a single week. Let's be realistic here, people!

That said, I really doubt anyone will match those numbers. Take That, Kings of Leon and Coldplay are the biggest selling acts in the UK and they wouldn't be able to do it...

in 10 years time there could be 5 albums that sold more in there first week

The market is too fragmented. You need to have 700,000 fans who are obsessively interested in a new album by an artist that is has the disposable cash to buy that new album. You're talking about an act that appeals to 30 somethings.

There's no way 700,000 people will buy a Lady Gaga album in the first 7 days even if it is preceded by two monster singles, has leaked the rest of them and they all turn out to be pure gold and it gets huge critical praise.

Coldplay could do it if they release their greatest hits album after a huge hit single and release the week before Christmas.

A GH set seems most likely, but don't you think if Oasis could only manage 230k a year after a successful return to form Coldplay might struggle to make 700k?
