With the likes of Muhammad Ali, Rod Hull & Emu...complete with the bit where Billy Connolly says "If you try that on me, I`ll break his beak & your hand". He never had an easy show did he? Poor old Michael! Even having a cardboard cut-out on the Kenny Everett show, along with "Cupid Stunt".

The Top Singles in April 1982

01 01 MY CAMERA NEVER LIES - BUCKS FIZZ...the 3rd number one for the ex-Eurovision winners

02 05 EBONY AND IVORY - STEVIE WONDER/PAUL MCCARTNEY...that piano, and those vocals of Stevie & Paul

03 02 AIN`T NO PLEASING YOU - CHAS N DAVE...the biggest hit for the duo, actually topping the Melody Maker chart in 1982!

04 06 GIVE ME BACK MY HEART - DOLLAR...David & Therese with a bit of a 70s feel to this chart all round

05 14 PAPA`S GOT A BRAND NEW PIGBAG - PIGBAG...post punk from Cheltenham & Birmingham, and what an instrumental

06 04 MORE THAN THIS - ROXY MUSIC...Bryan Ferry & his suit!

07 03 SEVEN TEARS - GOOMBAY DANCE BAND...the German based sound, that could`ve been Boney M

08 17 BLUE EYES - ELTON JOHN...63 last month it`s Reg Dwight returning to the top ten after a break

09 21 ONE STEP FURTHER - BARDO...the UK entry to Eurovision 1982, that was 2nd only to Germany`s Nicole

10 07 GHOSTS - JAPAN...David Sylvian up to his tricks with those looks and sounds

11 18 FANTASTIC DAY - HAIRCUT 100...old Nick & the boys

12 13 NIGHT BIRDS - SHAKATAK...Jazz funk and the 1st of 2 top ten hits

13 27 I CAN MAKE YOU FEEL GOOD - SHALAMAR...always seen in the chart with Shakatak by coincidence, and masterminded by Don Cornelius of "Soul Train" fame

14 08 JUST AN ILLUSION - IMAGINATION...Leee John and the bunch

15 12 SEE THOSE EYES - ALTERED IMAGES...the lovely Clare Grogan, on many a wall

16 10 DEAR JOHN - STATUS QUO...Frances, Rick and the boys, probably still getting Rabbito One airplay in 1982

17 26 THIS TIME - ENGLAND WORLD CUP SQUAD...our go at the World Cup in 1982, which was in Spain. Finished with Italy winning

18 23 REALLY SAYING SOMETHING - BANANARAMA...the first solo outing away from the Fun Boy Three. The original Spice Girls there!

19 15 DON`T LOVE ME TOO HARD - NOLANS...those Irish lassies from the 70s Talent show "Opportunity Knocks", supported Frank Sinatra in 1975 on tour. In 1979, they were tipped to win the Song For Europe with "Harry My Honolulu Lover" but came fourth, as the dodgy "Mary Anne" from Black Lace went to represent us in Eurovision. It took the Nolan Sisters five years to get a UK hit. The first being "Spirit Body & Soul" in October 1979

20 11 IS IT A DREAM - CLASSIX NOUVEAU...Sal Solo and co, getting number ones in Europe, but not the UK

21 09 HAVE YOU EVER BEEN IN LOVE - LEO SAYER...the return for Leo, who was doing a BBC2 series at the time

22 29 EVER SO LONELY - MONSOON...world fusion sound, thei first hit. The 2nd was "Shakti" and the video was directed by Midge Ure

23 16 LAYLA - DEREK AND THE DOMINOES...the re-issued Eric Clapton hit

24 20 DAMNED DON`T CRY - VISAGE...Steve Strange and that New Romantic sound, that had Midge Ure connections yet again

25 11 YOURS - JULIO IGLESIAS...that Spaniard, who used to play soccer, but had an injury. So, went to singing. Vera Lynn had a number one with it in January 1942

26 24 HOUSE ON FIRE - BOOMTOWN RATS...Bob Geldof and the boys, who finally bit the dust in 1986. In Jan 1981, they released a song called "Up All Night" that flopped, but I always thought it should`ve been a hit

27 NE SHIRLEY - SHAKIN`STEVENS...another cover for the Welshman, most certainly the Dave Edmunds of the eighties!

28 39 FREEZE-FRAME - J GEILS BAND...following up "Centrefold". They formed in 1967, had many a US hit and took 25 years to even do that in the UK

29 28 CAT PEOPLE - DAVID BOWIE...David Jones was 63 in January. Mr always different, I think we could say, as well as multi-talented. He was born in Brixton you know

30 22 A BUNCH OF TIME - FOSTER AND ALLEN...those lovely Irish men, Tony Allen/Mick Foster still doing the rounds in 2010

31 43 PROMISED YOU A MIRACLE - SIMPLE MINDS...up to Glasgow for Jim Kerr and co

32 NE VIEW FROM A BRIDGE - KIM WILDE...Marty`s girl in to year 2 of her career, but tending to slip into decline

33 44 INSTINCTION - SPANDAU BALLET...the Kemps in better days, and I would say better sound. I mean I couldn`t stand the overplayed hits of True & Gold etc

34 31 IRON FIST - MOTORHEAD...Ian Kilmister and co. So much rock around in the chart in 1982. Did we blame Tommy Vance on the Top 40, although he was making like a million mistakes every Sunday! Or were you tuning in to Richard Allinson and the UK Top 30 on Capital?! Well, it was a week ahead! And in those days Richard actually turned up, unlike last Saturday morning when he went awol from his radio 2 show & Colin Berry took the reigns and had no sleep!

35 30 ARE YOU LONESOME TONIGHT (THE LAUGHING VERSION) - ELVIS PRESLEY...a 70s live version, where Elvis starts laughing because lyrics were changed around

36 25 POISON ARROW - ABC...Martin Fry and co, and the Trevor Horn produced "Lexicon Of Love" LP

37 NE I WON`T LET YOU DOWN - PHD...Jim Diamond`s outfit, who couldn`t get a follow up in the UK. "Suzi`s On The Up" was the follow up. There were 3 others, and they all flopped too

38 NE PRIVATE EYES - HALL & OATES...So many US hits, but the UK had very few big ones

39 NE GIRL CRAZY - HOT CHOCOLATE...Errol Brown doing the business again, proving once again a 1970s feel in 1982

40 36 STONE COLD - RAINBOW...Ritchie Blackmore led the group, after Deep Purple. Cozy Powell was a 70s member & Graham Bonnet was there between 1979/80.

The chart of April 82 is brilliant Kim Wilde had a top 5 hit with a View From A Bridge weeks later. Japan - Ghosts is one of those tracks that really gripped me it was different at the time. Altered Images were a bit kooky at the time, but Clare Grogan's voice was to die for  I wonder if she is still presenting.
Dave, I hate to break it to you, but it is spelled 'cemetery' - the Americans spell it with an a (cemetary).

A severe lack of climbers this week, plus too many old songs in re-entries. Now the question that people are asking is...Will Usher get ahead of Diana, by Sunday? Not likely...though some programme called Big Top 40, a circus in it`s own right, might have it that way!

DON`T FORGET...If you can recieve Eins Festival at 19.2 East on Satellite, there are 9 editions of Top Of The Pops on offer tonight in a selection from 1970-76 between the hours of 11pm & 5am.

And Double Don`t Forget the Fresh Hit40UK will be on http://thesupertstation.info & Heart FM Spain on Sunday at 4pm...Take note of that, because if you are a listener, The Superstation will closing down in the near future...So you will have to switch to Heart FM Spain in order to listen. More new entries per hour, and the complete top 40 followed by the Ones To Watch from 7-8pm...You can`t go wrong!

Dave, I hate to break it to you, but it is spelled 'cemetery' - the Americans spell it with an a (cemetary).

Yep...but we don`t say tery, we say tree!

Where can I find the full list for the Top 50 pre-order singles.I want to post a link on the Alex forum.Very pleased to see Sophie there.

How different is April 82 to today. It is hard to believe there was a time when bands could sing and play instruments and being a singer meant you knew how to carry a tune and actually sing.

It could go either way.Diana was also No 1 last week on pre-orders.Where can I find the full pre-order chart?

Thanks Dave

Nice to see Glee back in the chart :kink:

I really do hope Sophie being #4 on pre-orders is a good sign!

I'm actually with you on this one! :o

Don't usually like Sophie's music that much, but for me, 'Bittersweet' is the best thing she's done and it'd be a real shame if it flops! :(

You won`t find one! HMV do a pre-order album chart on their site.

The pre-order singles are totally based on the physical format, I haven`t found a way to get pre-order download tracks yet. As the physical format is dying rapidly...we are likely to lose both pre-order singles & the physical chart altogether.

  • Author
Dave, where abouts do you forsee my Sophie charting when released? It'd be nice to have some idea, I'm quite anxious.

It`ll do top 20, I should think.

"How To Train Your Dragon" still doing well at the box office, finally went to see that last weekend and it was really good :)

Hope Diana can hold onto #1 until Sunday - she should do. Top of physicals :cheer:

Random question - how come the post date for your first post is always a few weeks in the past?
