May 26, 201015 yr The main problem is total domination of one genre. As one poster said earlier in 06/07 we had total landfill indie and that ruined indie's chances of chart hits for a couple of years and eventually urban will do the same. Saying a total genre in $hite it wrong yes some urban in the charts is totally godawful, here's looking at you Roll Deep, but look further down the charts and one of the best songs of the year so far is there, Nas and Damien 'Jr Gong' Marley, and that's urban, well urban and regge.
May 26, 201015 yr The dominance of urban is a bit twisted in a way...Everything British acts and newcomers like Derulo release go to Top 5 and then quality tracks like Over by Drake struggle to chart in the first place Very pleased Nothin' on You went to no. 1 though Edited May 26, 201015 yr by SKOB

I would be ecstatic if acts like Drake, Lil Wayne and Nas & Damien Marley could get the positions Roll Deep and N-Dubz got but sadly they don't. However, Nothin' On You is one of the best number ones of the year.
May 26, 201015 yr The main problem with songs like Over and As We Enter and Drop The World that scrape top 40 or don't make it at all is that for urban music to do well it needs to cross over into other genres - all the hip hop stuff in the top 10/20 has pop or dance influence and contemporary R&B crosses over naturally. The one exception is Eminem who seems to be able to get a top 10 with anything he releases even if it doesn't cross over into anything (Not Afraid). As We Enter did extremely well to go top 40, and I'm really glad about it as well, quality song, shame they didn't play it due to the bloody Big Weekend ¬_¬

He is now essentially in the Oasis, U2 stage of his career that whatever he releases will go top 10/20 and will have a number one album that goes platinum but doesn't make all that difference to his career or the world of music.
