Shock and Awe was not aimed at taking out any Iraqi regime leaders it was about striking fear into ordinary Iraqis in order to encourage them to rebel and rise up against the Hussein regime, Bush and Blair sent in B-52's to carpet bomb residential areas of the city, 26000 perished in these actions so while I support America taking out a restaurant in the hunt for a senior regime figure I do not support the levelling of entire residential areas when there was no regime or military targets in those areas.

The figures you quote are unsubstantiated and you understanding of the tactic wrong. Shock and awe is designed to decapitate the infrastructure and reduce a target's ability to function. Shock and awes first night of bombing targeted specifically Saddam's bunker miltary headquarters and such facilities as power, and water. Most of these strikes were via stealth bomber and cruise missile and for the most part are considered 'surgical'. It was expected that once the governemnt was unable to sufficiently direct it's troops that the Iraqi army would collapse. The B-52s didn't use carpet bombing during shock and awe instead they launched AGM-86C CALCMs - cruise missiles. There was no use of carpet bombing during the 2nd Gulf War. It was however used on the Tora Bora mountains during Operation Enduring Freedom (Afghanistan).

Independent reports state the total number of civilian casulaties for the first two years on from and including the whole invasion period to be 24,865 whilst Baghdad recorded less than 50% of that total (2 year period).

30% killed was during the invasion period = approx 8,000

These figures are particularly telling -

US-led forces killed 37% of civilian victims.

Anti-occupation forces/insurgents killed 9% of civilian victims.

Post-invasion criminal violence accounted for 36% of all deaths.

I did overstep the mark I accept that and indeed am fully expecting a ban will take it on the chin, I had debated cleanly and fairly for 10 pages against up to a dozen lefties and was very clean and polite then something happened offline that put me in a mood and Danny's what I viewed as sarcastic remarks while I was in a mood set me off big time and I let rip, if I am banned I am banned but my previous good conduct in thread and this forum since my last ban should IMHO make the matter worthy of a warning but whatever is meant to happen will happen

Personally, I actually wouldn't think you should be banned, purely because, as a general principle, I don't believe you can defeat people's opinions just by shutting them up (which is why I believe the BNP should be legally allowed to exist). But still, that post from you was disgusting even by the low standards you'd already set in this thread.

I don't think I should be banned, I fully expect to be but I hope for the greater good of news/perspectives a warning or final warning is deemed sufficient, what turned into a 10 page debate and IMHO a very good one would have been a half page thread of condemnation which would be 3/4 down the page now

 

likewise me being the only one on BJ that is prepared to go into bat for the tory party makes for good balance of debates and discussion on here and my banning would lead to little or no political debate on here as everyone would be singing from the same hymnsheet so I don't believe that some people's desire for my head on a plate would make for a better news/perspectives forum if they succeed.

I'll agree that it would be 'regrettable' if you were banned Craig. Although our opinions are pretty far removed form each other it does promote healthy debate and there's nothing that kills that quicker than everyone agreeing with each other. I do feel that particular post was inappropriate and rather exaggerated as well as being distasteful but aside from that you have kept it largely eloquent and within the rules. I'd like to think you don't genuinely believe that particular comment but if you do well... it IS your right, even if expressing that much is breaking the rules.

Thanks yeah to say I was in a foul mood at the time is a bit of an understatement, doesn't excuse what I said and that was red mist/anger/frustration boiling over and not an accurate reflection as such of my views I just wanted to let rip after someone had wasted 3 weeks of my time offline over a house I was looking at getting but I still said it and that Is what management will judge me on at the end of the day.

Well God help us if you ever get into a position of power. A trivial dispute with someone, and you want to exterminate an entire nation.
