July 25, 201014 yr crystal castles are canadian? LOL I forgot the Mercury Prize was just for British aritsts, WOTATARD. I'm a life of blonde moments I swurr :( Let's just see CC get nominated for an International Brit purrrrhaps.
July 26, 201014 yr I put my thoughts in detail here -> http://www.whiffytidings.com/current-tidings/mercurial <- but, yes, the biggest shock is the lack of innovative sound in this year's list - at least one of f*** Buttons or Four Tet should be in there. Someone mentioned Autechre but I thought their LP was way below their usual standard. Also a crying shame that Steve Mason didn't get in there. Pretty poor nominations, but this award has always been a bit rubbish. Better than most awards but with a pretty poor panel ultimately.
July 28, 201014 yr I dont see why Mumford and Sons will walk away with it. Mumford and Sons are god awful so I hope they don't. I think The xx are really shoe-ins. And after seeing them live I can't disagree, they're incredible. What a simple, intimate album. Wild Beats would definitely be worthy too though.
July 28, 201014 yr I know this isn't a typical Mercury nomination but I'm surprised Crystal Castles weren't nominated, it was really well-received! It's a fantastic album - very 90s... but Baptism really is one of the singles of the year for me..... hideous artwork, though, but superb album.
July 28, 201014 yr the crystal castles album cover is amazing? describes the album perfectly imo. like that it isn't like lolololphotoshophey
July 28, 201014 yr Totally forgot about Crystal Castles. Better than everyone except XX in my opinion.
July 28, 201014 yr I didn't really bother with Crystal Castles when it first leaked as I didn't like their first album at all, but I do really like this one. 'Celestica' is superb, I think it's definitely worked its way into my top 10 singles of the year. If they were British it would certainly be worthy of the Mercury Prize. I love Mumford & Sons too. I think their album is fantastic, it took a while to grow but it's now easily the album I've listened to most this year. They're fantastic live too. I've watched 'The Cave' at Glastonbury so many times now...
July 28, 201014 yr Crystal Castles ftw tbh. Can't believe they didn't nominate it, it doesn't even appear to have been submitted by the label. FOOLS. (and, yes, the album is superb) Edited July 28, 201014 yr by Dandy*
July 28, 201014 yr The xx is the best on the list by a mile m0. Wild Beasts are alright but THAT VOICE just gets to me after so long :\ Sorry bj..
July 28, 201014 yr LOL I love how everybody agrees on me with CC even though they're foreign. Let's boycott the Mercury Music Prize pls <3 Especially after Speech DeBalls. Oh and Russ I ADORE the artwork for this era! It's stunning. Especially the Doe Deer cover.
August 3, 201014 yr I hope Mumford & Sons don't win. For me, their really overrated and remind me too much of a (bad) Fleet Foxes. Its not even that I don't like them, I enjoy the singles, but the album is a bit samey. Dizzee is a surprise, its easily his worst (most commercial) album, even if it is still better than 90% of the rap genre at the moment. Paul Weller is a surprise too, but other than that, they do seem to be playing it rather safe. The xx / Marling for the win, please.
September 7, 201014 yr So this is tonight then, any thoughts? Anyone watching? Paul Weller is now the big favourite after loads of bets were placed on him last friday. William Hill odds: Paul Weller - 2/5 The xx - 9/4 Wild Beasts/Laura Marling/Mumford & Sons - 10/1 Foals/Villagers/I Am Kloot - 14/1
September 7, 201014 yr So basically that's code for victory for I Am Kloot then, yes? I'd like Wild Beasts to win.
