Former Stereophonics drummer Stuart Cable has been found dead at his home in south Wales. Emergency services attended Mr Cable's house at Llwydcoed near Aberdare, Cynon Valley, at 0500 BST on Monday.

South Wales Police said the cause of death had not been established but there were no suspicious circumstances at this stage. Mr Cable, who left the Stereophonics in 2003, had hosted his rock show on BBC Radio Wales on Saturday. South Wales Police confirmed they were investigating the sudden death of a 40-year-old man at an address in Llwydcoed. Next of kin have been informed. His death comes just two days after Mr Cable's former band Stereophonics played at Cardiff City Stadium. The band was formed in Cwmaman near Aberdare. in 1992 by school friends Kelly and Richard Jones along with Mr Cable, who was four years older.

Within five years they were rising stars, supporting bands such as the Rolling Stones and U2. Mr Cable has said he was planning to leave the band before he was sacked in September 2003. He also said he had no regrets about leaving the band. He later formed a new group called Killing for Company, who were due to play at the Download festival Donington Park on Saturday. The band's new album is due for release to coincide with it.

Mike Peters, lead singer with The Alarm, said Cable's band had only recently played with them and his death was a "real shock" and a "real tragedy" "He was supposed to be joining us for Rhondda Rocks. I will remember him as someone who was so alive - I can't believe he's gone. I don't know what the circumstances are but it's a real tragedy. "He was always smiling and laughing and great to be around. He had lots of energy and couldn't wait for the next day to come around. "He was a larger than life character who seemed to be a driving force behind the personality of the Stereophonics." Another tribute came from Radio 1 DJ Chris Moyles, who said he was "very shocked" to hear the news. "He was always lovely when we met. Love to his family and friends. RIP," he said on his Twitter feed. Cable's autobiography, Demons and Cocktails, was released in 2009.

The autobiography shed light on tensions between Cable and Stereophonics vocalist Kelly Jones which eventually led to the drummer's departure. Cable revealed the split was mainly sparked off by Jones' desire to produce the band's third album. There were also said to be tensions in the band about Cable's burgeoning career as a presenter. He hosted his own TV show, Cable TV, and radio show, Cable Rock, for BBC Wales. He has also been involved in a variety of other projects. In March 2002, he took part in a BBC Wales social action campaign urging young men to look out for the warning signs of testicular cancer. In autumn 2007 Cable quit the BBC to launch a Cardiff-based branch of rock station XFM, which closed after six months on air. He was also a presenter for the Birmingham-based commercial radio station Kerrang! But he returned back at BBC Radio Wales with his Saturday rock show in April.

hardly ronnie james dio or paul gray. just saying.

still too young to die though.

Some of the comments on here really should be removed - Cable is a family friend of mine and if he had problems with anything, it was with drink. Just spoke with my boss... she saw Stuart last night... he was outside the local pub.... his drinking was a big issue for him, and yes, he used drugs.... from what I knew, amphetamine. but I think we're looking at a drink-related death.

By the way - a 'junkie' is a heroin user - so get your facts right. And the sarcy comment from Chris..... well... you've obviously failed to keep up with his career since he left/ was sacked from the Stereochronics.... he went on to far better things. His current band Killing For Company blow the 'chronics out of the water.

As for Stuart dying..... he was a great and uber talented guy and will be very sorely missed.

I think it's irrelevant that Killing For Company blow stereophonics out of the water seeing as they are hardly known (83 listeners on last.fm), he wont be remembered at all for them, his memory will be that he used to drum in stereophonics.

kudos to your sig though.

This thread shopuld be used to pay any last respects to Stuart Cable not arguing the toss about personal preferences of who should be mourned or not. Any more and there will be heavy editing of threads being done.

Stuart Cable

R.I.P.

I remember Stereophonics, used to enjoy their output.

R.I.P. Stuart Cable.

RIP, I like the Stereophonics and it's always sad to hear news like this. Especially on my birthday of all days -_-

Some of the comments made are a tad inappropriate I have to admit, he was a drummer in a famous band so it's only right there should be a thread about him if something like this happens...

R.I.P.

Not much of a fan of the band but they were definately better when he was still in them. Whether that is related or not I can't say

Sad times big fan of the Stereophonics.

RIP.

This is incredibly sad news. Very upsetting to read this having met him outside a soundcheck at a gig in Southampton in (I think 2001) when Turin Brakes were the support act. He came across as a really unprentious regular guy who chatted with me & a mate for a good 3-5 minutes..

Why is it that the larger than life characters are always the ones to die early. Former Crowded House drummer Paul Hester & now Stuart Cable are probably the two friendliest musicians (of a relatively limited number) that I have ever met; and now both are dead.

Sad times.
