Posted June 7, 201015 yr Hello peeps, I was looking at the charts stats on this forum and it really got me wondering, what went wrong with the Britney album? Now I'm basing this purely on the UK chart stats but I'd be very interested to hear what others from around the world have to say on the subject. OK, so both the albums ...Baby One More Time and Oops I did it again were very popular in the UK, Baby selling over a million and Oops darn close to it, yet 'Britney' had a considerable drop in sales, only half a million. Also, the lead single, Slave 4 U didn't hit number 1 like previous lead singles, it also didn't sell as well, it didn't even sell as many as Stronger, the third single from the Oops album. If I make a list of my best to worst albums by Britney, 'Britney' always comes towards the bottom, yet I do enjoy the album. So what went wrong? Is it that the lead single was too big a departure from the previous singles, the slushy Don't Let Me Be The Last To Know, the power pop of Stronger, the cheese of Lucky? Did this weak start have a knockback effect on the rest of the album? I'd be really interested to hear some thoughts from you guys, maybe i'm being too hard on the album.
June 8, 201015 yr Nah. I wouldn't say 'Slave 4 U' was particularly "weak", but it deifnitely divided her fanbase, from those who had bought her first two albums. I certainly hated the song when I very first heard it, but as I grew older and appreciated more music etc... I grew to absoloutely adore it and I think it's a classic now tbh. But yeah. That for me, is probably what "went wrong" or whatever. But 'Britney' era is definitely her most underrated.
June 8, 201015 yr It's because it was a departure from her bubblegum pop, and it was well planned when you think about how alot of pop stars don't make it. It was because bitch could dance her ass off, was sexy as hell, and her music wasn't TOO different from her first two albums.
June 8, 201015 yr Speaking from experiance, Slave just wasn't overly catchy. Especially for the younger fans, it was v. sexy and little else. I think Overprotected brought it back to the Britney we loved though.
