June 20, 201015 yr By entering at No.60, The Glee Cast take 'To Sir With Love', into the UK Charts for the first time. It was originally a 1967 USA No.1 Hit, (5 Weeks), for Lulu - from the Film of the same name, in which she sang it. It was never released as a UK Single. Instead, it was the 'B' Side of her 1967 UK No.11 Hit, Let's Pretend'. Just as in the USA, 'The Boat That I Row', was the 'B' Side of 'To Sir With Love' - and so that UK No.6 Hit, (1967), missed out on the chance to be a USA Hit. She finally got a UK No.1 in 1993, on 'Relight My Fire', with Take That. (A Cover of a 1979 Dan Hartman Hit). Now That poor Christina has fallen from No.1 to No.29:, THE BIGGEST FALLS FROM No.1 - UK ALBUM CHART (Since that Chart began on W/E 28th July 1956) 1 to 29 - Bionic - Christina Aguilera - (W/E 26th June 2010) 1 to 18 - All Things Must Pass - George Harrison - (W/E 3rd April 1971) 1 to 16 - Lights - Ellie Goulding - (W/E 20th March 2010) 1 to 14 - Wu-Tang Forever - Wu-Tang Clan - (W/E 21st June 1997) 1 to 14 - Some Cities - Doves - (W/E 12th March 2005) 1 to 13 - Tales From Topographic Oceans - Yes - (W/E 19th January 1974) 1 to 13 - Kid A - Radiohead - (W/E 28th October 2000) 1 to 12 - Jam - Little Angels - (W/E 13th February 1993) 1 to 12 - In This Light And On This Evening - Editors - (W/E 31st October 2009) 1 to 11 - Join With Us - The Feeling - (W/E 8th March 2008) Now that Oasis have their 8th No.1 Album:, (It is the UK's 900th No.1 Album) UK CHART ACTS - 8 OR MORE NUMBER 1 ALBUMS (WEEKS AT No.1 IN BRACKETS) (To W/E 26th June 2010) 1) BEATLES - 15 (174W) 2)=ELVIS PRESLEY - 11 (63W) 2)=MADONNA - 11 (29W) 4)=THE ROLLING STONES - 10 (45W) 4)=U2 - 10 (15W) 6)=ABBA - 9 (57W) 6)=MICHAEL JACKSON - 9 (Includes 1 No.1, as Michael Jackson Plus The Jackson Five - 3 No.1 Weeks) (30W) 6)=QUEEN - 9 (21W) 9)=ROBBIE WILLIAMS - 8 (28W) 9)=DAVID BOWIE - 8 (22W) 9)=OASIS - 8 (21W) 9)=LED ZEPPELIN - 8 (14W) 9)=BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN - 8 (14W) 9)=REM - 8 (13W) MOST WEEKS AT NUMBER 1 - UK ALBUMS ACTS (NUMBER 1 ALBUMS IN BRACKETS) (To W/E 26th June 2010) 1) BEATLES - 174 (15) 2) ELVIS PRESLEY - 63 (11) 3) ABBA - 57 (9) 4) ROLLING STONES - 45 (10) 5) SHADOWS - 42 (Includes 21 Weeks with Cliff Richard) (3 No.1’s with Cliff Richard) (7) 6) SIMON & GARFUNKEL - 40 (2) 7)=CLIFF RICHARD - 30 (7) 7)=MICHAEL JACKSON - 30 (Including 3 Weeks as Michael Jackson Plus The Jackson Five) (9) 9)=CARPENTERS - 29 (3) 9)=MADONNA - 29 (11) 11)=ELTON JOHN - 28 (6) 11)=ROBBIE WILLIAMS - 28 (8) 13) ROD STEWART - 27 (7) 14) SIMPLY RED - 26 (5) 15) PHIL COLLINS - 25 (5) 16) BOB DYLAN - 24 (7) 17)=DAVID BOWIE - 22 (8) 17)=DIRE STRAITS - 22 (4) 19)=QUEEN - 21 (9) 19)=TAKE THAT - 21 (5) 19)=OASIS - 21 (8) Edited June 20, 201015 yr by zeus555
June 20, 201015 yr Author Thanks as ever for that extra information zeus. Do you have a list of artists with a 100% record of number ones with six or more studio albums? Oasis have 7 out of 7 (excluding special editions etc.).
June 20, 201015 yr Zeus, perhaps you should note there have been two albums to fall out of the chart from #1 (elthough neither were genuine falls) - one was Now! 13 and the other was some soundtrack (forgot which) that they just decided couldn't chart any more. Also, Editors - In This Light And On This Evening (1-12) is ommitted from your 'biggest falls from #1' list. Edited June 20, 201015 yr by Bray
June 20, 201015 yr you said Crowded house was in the top 10 when it was number 12 Other than that, very interesting read :)
June 20, 201015 yr Author you said Crowded house was in the top 10 when it was number 12 Other than that, very interesting read :) Oops. It was top ten in Friday's mids
June 20, 201015 yr Author Zeus, perhaps you should note there have been two albums to fall out of the chart from #1 (elthough neither were genuine falls) - one was Now! 13 and the other was some soundtrack (forgot which) that they just decided couldn't chart any more. Now 13 was the last number one before the separate compilations chart was established so that one doesn't really count.
June 20, 201015 yr Now 13 was the last number one before the separate compilations chart was established so that one doesn't really count. I know - hence 'neither were genuine falls'. :)
June 20, 201015 yr Bray - Thanks for spotting that I'd missed out Editors - I've now added them to the List. NUMBER 1 ALBUMS THAT VANISHED FROM THE CHARTS 1) 'THE FOUR & ONLY SEEKERS' - THE SEEKERS (1968) For W/E 8th March 1968, the 'Record Retailer' Chart had 'The Four & Only Seekers', by The Seekers, as a New Entry, at No.1. It was a Budget Album. This Chart should not have included Budget Albums. The correct Chart still had 'Diana Ross & The Supremes Join The Temptations', by Diana Ross & The Supremes With The Temptations, at No.1 - for a 4th, (& final), Week. The Seekers Album has been eradicated from Chart History - the only Album to enter at No.1, & leave No.1, in the same Chart! And, yet, to never have Charted at all..... 2) '40 GREATEST' - ELVIS PRESLEY (1974) (Some call it '40 Greatest Hits', & some 'Elvis Presley's 40 Greatest Hits'. The Album Cover actually credits it as '40 Greatest'). This Elvis Album was No.1, for several Weeks, in late 1974, & early 1975. None of which are now recognised as No.1 Weeks for him. It was removed from the Chart on W/E 8th March 1975 having been at No.2 on the W/E 1st March Chart. Then Chart History was re-written, & we are told that it did not Chart until W/E 5th July 1975, (A No.25 Entry). That it did not even reach the Top 10 until W/E 3rd September 1977 - reaching No.1 - for 1 Week - on W/E 10th September 1977. (Yet it was the 4th Best Seller of 1974, & the 6th Best Seller of 1975 - which means that it outsold many of the Albums, in the Chart, that we now pretend it did not enter until July 1975 ). Here are its Chart Positions in the Comprehensive Chart, at the time - a Weekly BMRB Album Chart, that combined both Budget & Full Price Albums - so you could see which Albums were really selling the most - not just which Full Priced ones were..... W/E 9th November 1974 - 4-1-1-1-1-1-1-1 - (1975) - 1-??-??-11-4-2-1-1-2 We now pretend that 'Greatest Hits', by Elton John, was No.1, for 11 Weeks - in the 'Main' Chart - from W/E 23rd November 1974 to W/E 1st February 1975 - 11 Weeks. In fact, it would have been at No.2 - for at least 7 of those Weeks - had the Elvis Album not been banished from the Chart..... 3) 'THAT'LL BE THE DAY - ORIGINAL SOUNDTRACK (1973) In 1973, the 'That'll Be The Day' Soundtrack, was removed from the Album Chart - from No.1. It was on its 7th No.1 Week, in the W/E 11th August Chart, & was gone, from the entire Chart, in the W/E 18th August Chart. But, it was still Selling - the Chart Compilers, simply decided that it no longer qualified to be in the Chart. Its entire Chart Run was:, W/E 23rd June 1973 - 2 - 1 - 1 - 1 - 1 - 1 - 1 - 1 - OUT 4) 'NOW THAT'S WHAT I CALL MUSIC 13' - VARIOUS ARTISTS (1989) For The Chart of W/E 14th January 1989, Gallup removed all Various Artist Compilations, & put them in their own Chart. 'Now 13' was No.1 at the time, & was removed from the 'Artist' Chart, & put into the Compilation Chart. Befrore it was removed, its Chart Run was:, W/E 3rd December 1988 - 1 - 1 - 1 - 2 - 2 - 1 - OUT Edited June 20, 201015 yr by zeus555
June 20, 201015 yr Thanks as ever for that extra information zeus. Do you have a list of artists with a 100% record of number ones with six or more studio albums? Oasis have 7 out of 7 (excluding special editions etc.). Suedehead2 - Obviously, the more Albums an Act releases, the less chance there is that all of their Studio Albums will reach No.1. Madonna started off slow, so her 'Madonna' Album, (1984), only reached No.6, in 1985 - re-titled, 'The First Album'. U2, started slow too, as did Queen, ABBA, Police, & R.E.M. They all took a while to have No.1 Studio Albums. Eminem has reached No.1 with 4 Studio Albums - out of 5 - so far. But, the first - 'The Slim Shady LP', (1999), was only a No.10 Album. The Beatles reached No.1 with all 11 of their Studio Albums. (1963 to 1970). Some would say, the first 9 reached No.1, & then 'Yellow Submarine', (No.3 - 1969), broke the run. However, not all of that Album was by The Beatles. They were only on the 6 Tracks on Side 1. The 7 Tracks on Side 2, were Instrumentals etc. Oasis seem to be only the 2nd Act, to have had more than 6 Studio Albums, that all reached No.1 - 7 in their case. The Beatles are the only other Act to achieve it. Boyzone have had 4 Studio Albums in the UK, (since 1995), & all 4 have reached No.1. The 4th was 'Brother', earlier this Year. Coldplay have also released 4 Studio Albums, (2000 - 2008), & all 4 of theirs have reached No.1. Robbie Williams saw his 1st 7 Studio Albums go to No.1 - 1998 to 2006. (The first was released in 1997). But, the 8th - 'Reality Killed The Video Star' (2009) - spoilt the 'Run', & stalled at No.2..... Edited June 23, 201015 yr by zeus555
June 20, 201015 yr Author Thanks for that zeus. I had assumed it was a pretty rare feat for the reasons you gave. That was the main reason for asking the question. Indeed it's so rare that I should have set the limit at four (which is what you did) or even three rather than six.
June 21, 201015 yr Ah, there's more than 2 that vanished from #1 - I thought there was only 1 until I found out about that soundtrack, and the Elvis and Seekers albums I was never aware of at all.
