Kinks bassist Pete Quaife has died at the age of 66.

The exact cause of death is as-yet unknown, though Quaife had been undergoing kidney dialysis for over a decade after suffering renal failure in 1998, Rolling Stone reports. He passed away yesterday.

A founding member of the Kinks, Quaife played on all of the group's early records but quit briefly in 1966 and permanently in 1969 after falling out with his bandmates.

He last played with the band in 1990, when they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame.

In 2008, group leader Ray Davies suggested that he and Quaife might reunite for a new Kinks record, but Quaife reportedly rejected the suggestion.

RIP :(

"Thank you for the days,

Those endless days, those sacred days you gave me.

I'm thinking of the days,

I won't forget a single day, believe me.

I bless the light,

I bless the light that lights on you believe me.

And though you're gone,

You're with me every single day, believe me."

Sad day :( They have so many songs I'm pretty sure a lot of people my age know without realising! They certainly have had a lot of influence on the bands I listen to.

Time to listen to the singles collection again!

Agreed. People would recognise a lot of Kinks songs even if they didn't realise it. I've always considered Blur's Parklife to be a Kinks tribute album - in a good way.

RIP Pete Quaife :(

You may remember back to a couple of weeks ago, when I mentioned about the death of Steve New from The Rich Kids, whose obituary I saw in The Independent accompanied by a picture of New in the band with Midge Ure and Glen Matlock. Now I was under the impression that The Guardian had not mentioned New’s death in their pages, but actually an appreciation of his life was featured in a Saturday edition, under the name of ‘Stella Nova’.

Not only did I overlook the notice in The Guardian when I first looked in that edition, but I think I would have ‘bypassed’ the obituary in The Independent, if I had not recognised the other, more famous, members of The Rich Kids, in the photo first.

Similarly, I have to say that I do not know who this person is, even though over the last few months I have bought a large number of albums by The Kinks and would probably regard myself as somebody who likes their music. To be honest, up until now, the only members I knew about were the brothers Davies and so, I do not think the obituary would have been something that I would have read, unless it featured some Kinks album covers or a very large photo of the group.

Thank you for alerting me to this fact and hopefully I will remember to look in The Guardian when I get home to see if the obituary is in today’s issue.

By the way, in regards to another recent obituary, I saw that The Telegraph actually had a ‘Frank Sidebottom’ obituary in their paper. This was unlike The Guardian and Independent, who had very formal obituaries of ‘his’ creator Chris Sievey, which was odd as I thought that it was more likely for The Telegraph to be the paper that was more ‘formal’ and ‘proper’.
