July 3, 201015 yr It'll definitely show up the UK if 'Alors On Danse' isn't a hit here. Such a massive hit all over Europe and it's a brilliant track but alas we'd either need a badly translated version (where the lyrics make no sense and sound awkward) or virtually instrumental version with hardly any lyrics. Still defeats the whole point of 'Alors On Danse' in any case. As for 'We No Speak Americano', it's practially an instrumental anyways. There's a first verse followed by a lot of "ba-ba-americano". The mid 80s seemed to appreciate foreign languages much more; 'Rock Me Amadeus', 'Voyage Voyage' and 'Joe Le Taxi' all being top 5 hits in the UK. EDIT: I forgot all about Los Lobos 'La Bamba'. :P Edited July 3, 201015 yr by Hitstastic
July 3, 201015 yr WTF. I just looked up Shakira's chart runs and La Tortura was not released! What the HELL? This could well be song of the year in the UK tbf. It might have been, had it been promoted or given airplay. It was actually a double A-side with Illegal in the UK, but again, they tacked on a rubbish English bit. I agreee that the government minister for culture should make it illegal (hehe) for radio and TV to not play foreign language music. Yes I'm serious.
July 3, 201015 yr Author Hoppìpolla appears to be correct - how did I forget that? That's one of my favourite songs of all time :drama: Thanks guys :D
July 3, 201015 yr I forgot about Mrs Doubtfire. :w00t: 3XGMb5PakOQ #28 in May 2007 ! Best. Eurovision. Song. Ever.
July 3, 201015 yr Author Best. Eurovision. Song. Ever. I agree. Didn't it only come 2nd or something or am I imagining that? I seem to remember Serbia pipping it with some awful song.:( Edited July 3, 201015 yr by Bray
July 3, 201015 yr I agree. Didn't it only come 2nd or something or am I imagining that? I seem to remember Serbia pipping it with some awful song.:( yep, it came second behind a rubbish serbian song called Prayer (english translation), it really was terrible The Ukrainian song was amazing though
July 3, 201015 yr Five months later, there was another German song, except in this case it was undebatably terrible: Oe3FG4EOgyU Schnappi - Schnappi Das Kleine Krokodil, #32 in Oct 2005 Frankly it sickens me that there haven't been more... Classic  Was strange to hear that in the UK charts! The Verka Serduchka song was complete and utter rubbish, and Molitva wasn't much better. Serebro/Russia were robbed :smoke:
July 3, 201015 yr Indeed it was: 29/04/2006 Juanes La Camisa Negra 32 {32}-52->2 'Hoppipolla' re-entered the UK top 40 not long after though.
July 3, 201015 yr I should point out that a great deal of the music in our charts is already foreign, albeit American. haha yer, but i mean't foreign language music.. although american english, isn't the same as British english, it virtually is haha But i get what you mean =D
July 3, 201015 yr Author 'Hoppipolla' re-entered the UK top 40 not long after though. Yes - on 27/05/2006 Hoppìpolla was at #36 (#26 the previous week, and #24 the week before that also). I remember Schnappi Das Kleine Krokodil (I only occasionally listened to the chart show back then and that was one of the weeks I decided to). It was... strange.
July 3, 201015 yr Author Having looked up the lyrics of We No Speak Americano, it does actually say "I love you" in English, but that's in the same vein as Rihanna saying 'Te Amo' in the song of that name, so it doesn't really count.
July 3, 201015 yr Why is Verka & that terrible song getting so much love? I completely agree with what Rich said: The Verka Serduchka song was complete and utter rubbish, and Molitva wasn't much better. Serebro/Russia were robbed :smoke:

I don't think there was a European country where it didn't chart - Mostly getting Top 5 also. Edited July 3, 201015 yr by euro music
July 3, 201015 yr True, it was still rubbish tho  Having looked up the lyrics of We No Speak Americano, it does actually say "I love you" in English, but that's in the same vein as Rihanna saying 'Te Amo' in the song of that name, so it doesn't really count. Yeah, I'll give them a pass on this. The song is about someone who's Italian but who wants to be American. It's a wonder there's not more English in it.
July 3, 201015 yr In 2000 there was Alizee - Moi...Lolita There were quite a few in the mid 90s A couple of the biggest were Wes - Alane -- Sash! - Encore Un Fois and even Celine Dion with Pour Que Tu M'aimes Encore The first ever (I think one of only two) complete foreign language single to reach #1 was actually banned at the time. The single in question was Je T'aime...Moi Non Plus by Jane Birkin & Serge Gainsboro back in 1969 -- (naughty buy nice) sHiMDB19Dyc Also peaking at #21 in August that same year was Si Tu Dois Partir by Fairport Convention Originally written by Bob Dylan and the English version originally a 1965 #2 hit for Manfred Mann AmmCSOpPzZc Apart from Je T'aime and Fairport the oldest one I have is Tour De France by Kraftwerk It was a #21 hit back in 1983. QLiai4gg_0Q I also have the original German version of the Kraftwerk #1 from 1981 The Model QUwHwXBBJTM Edited July 4, 201015 yr by euro music
July 3, 201015 yr They should introduce an MTV EUROPE channel on SKY, playing songs which are charting across the continent... i think something similar may have been available years ago? But i can't remember it...
July 3, 201015 yr Well we did have the brilliant MTV Europe until 1998. Then they changed it to MTV UK & Ireland ( ), introduced us to Richard Blackwood and Cat Deelay. The nail in the MTV coffin came around 2000 maybe 2001 with The Osbournes leading to a whole new world of cringe worthy American crap reality shows like MTV Cribs with really famous celebs like MC Whatshisface, Hugh Nomi and Anoni Muss. -_- MTV Hits is pretty much what MTV was in 1998.

I don't understand MTV, they don't even show music anymore LOL and they just bought VIVA from germany? launched it, even had that VIVA live show with live music ( in germany it is weekly ) and then stopped it after the first week and just filled it with none stop american tv shows... Maybe they could have like a weekly top ten of most played songs across europe on MTV this week? At least something would be nice!
