Ah, now that one DID chart after Hoppìpolla. :(

That song was just... strange.

Why is Verka & that terrible song getting so much love? I completely agree with what Rich said:

It's not the song, it's the brilliant performance. You can't get more Eurovision than that

It'll definitely show up the UK if 'Alors On Danse' isn't a hit here. Such a massive hit all over Europe and it's a brilliant track but alas we'd either need a badly translated version (where the lyrics make no sense and sound awkward) or virtually instrumental version with hardly any lyrics. Still defeats the whole point of 'Alors On Danse' in any case.

As for 'We No Speak Americano', it's practially an instrumental anyways. There's a first verse followed by a lot of "ba-ba-americano".

The mid 80s seemed to appreciate foreign languages much more; 'Rock Me Amadeus', 'Voyage Voyage' and 'Joe Le Taxi' all being top 5 hits in the UK.

EDIT: I forgot all about Los Lobos 'La Bamba'. :P

I reckon they'll leave Alors On Danse as it is, and it'll be top 3 regardless.

If WNSP is no. 1 this week...When was the previous foreign language no. 1?

Had Crazy Frog's version of Axel F any English words in it?

It didn't, but I don't think the 'language' in Axel F really qualifies as a language.

Haven't there only been 3 totally foreign language #1s ever? (including Yolanda)

What are those? Can't think of any...except Je t'aime?

Je T'aime... Moi Non Plus is definitely one, and I'm sure there's another one, but forgotten what it was.

Didn't Julio Iglesias have a number one with a spanish version of Begin the Beguine - Volver a Empezar. Bit ironic really as it was a Cole Porter classic. The only english bit on Julio's version is when he sings "When they Begin the Beguine" a couple of times. Mind you "Beguine" ain't an English word anyway !

That's exactly the one. Thanks :D

I'm sure there aren't any others.

I know the Singing Nun singing entirely in French didn't get to number one but it came close I think. Also "Ca Plane pour moi" Plastic Bertrand. Both were French Belgians so Stromae will not be the first from Belgium singing in French if he cracks the UK Top 10.
Uptown Topranking Althia and Donna was almost not English - Jamaican Patois.
The charted version of The Ketchup Song (Asereje) was half English wasn't it?

Yes :)

There was a fourth (or third, depending on how you look at it) foreign language #1 - Rock Me Amadeus by Falco in 1986. The US version was a dub/rap mix with very few vocals, but if I'm not mistaken the UK release used the original mix with a full German lyric.

Why would it be third? Julio, Yolanda and Je T'aime are all definitely 100% foreign language bar a few words in English in the former two.

And I think you're right about RMA, so that makes four.

I meant third chronologically - 1969 (AFAIK?), 1981 and 1986 :)

Foreign-language #1 hits:

Eddie Calvert - Oh Mein Papa (apparently the title is said at the start)

Jane Birkin & Serge Gainsbourg - Je T'Aime ... Moi Non Plus

Los Lobos - La Bamba

Enigma - Sadness Part I

I believe Rock Me Amadeus does have some English in it ("come on and rock me, Amadeus").

The English in RMA is not major enough to disqualify it I'd say.

Oh Mein Papa was released in English here AFAIA (although I wouldn't know, it's such an old song).

Good call on La Bamba - that makes five.

However, a large portion of Sadeness Part I was in English, which disqualifies it.
