November 5, 201113 yr It's true, although Radio 1 did give them a fair amount of airplay up to and including Stay and Radio 2 has supported them all the way. Trouble is they're just a visual band, so theatrical, and you really need to SEE them to fall in love with them. If Top Of The Pops still existed they would probably be the biggest band in the world. I've said it before and I'll say it again. Hurts for Eurovision 2012. :D That's probably the only way they could raise their UK profile. They're already so established in Europe that I'm sure those countries would be going all out to give the UK their 12 points. However, this is the BBC we're talking about. We'll have another Josh Nobody for 2012. Nul points, here we come.
November 5, 201113 yr Oh man, I'd love that  But I think they are taking some time out now to work on the second album, they've been touring non stop for the last 18 months :o I think the best solution would be a minor league artist (not a total nobody) performing a song written by Hurts. Well I can dream, but thinking about this last night, I don't think we heard the song they wrote for the Russian Eurovision selection yet... By the way it's time you updated your sig, I have a great Mikey moment in my personal chart thread
November 5, 201113 yr Here in Finland they sell out arenas and are one of the biggest international acts of the year and I believe they're popular elsewhere in Europe too. I can't believe that UK hasn't jumped the bandwagon. They're not perfect as they lack the "oooh factor" but certainly a newcomer worth noticing. Edited November 5, 201113 yr by SKOB
November 5, 201113 yr They've been playing in some good sized venues throughout Europe over the last few months so they have clearly built up a decent fan base. Even over here they have been playing reasonable sized venues but they seem, at the moment, to be heading for "Best band you've never heard of" status among the wider UK record-buying public :( I rather like the idea of them doing Eurovision. I'm not sure how popular they are in eastern Europe but I can certainly see them coming up with a song which would get a lot of votes from western Europe and Scandinavia. (Note to SKOB - I know Finland isn't technically part of Scandinavia so perhaps I should have said "the Scandinavian peninsula").

Or Nordic countries :P But if they do Eurovision, the song must be brilliant or they'll do t.A.T.u. and practically kill their career.
November 5, 201113 yr A friend of mine recommended this great new band they'd discovered recently from Manchester.. it took the wind out of their sails a bit when I told them I'd had the album for over a year! :D I do think they will breakthrough eventually, I don't think Eurovision would be the way to do it however.
November 5, 201113 yr Come on guys - HURTS doing Eurovision? They're way too 'cool' for that... and classy, too. Germany and Russia seems to adore them, too - the UK haven't jumped on board because I think we've kind of seen bands like HURTS many many times before.... as much as I love them, there's not an original thought in their heads - it's all a bit pastiche at times. They're a melting pot of many of my favourite 80s bands..... nothing wrong with that, but that's the way it is. Don't think we can even blame the UK press for ignoring them - they're best mates with the vile Gordon Smart(ass) from The Sun..... he even did a 2-page spread on them the other week when he travelled with them to Russia. And I'm saying this as a person who's seen them live 8 times and who's loved them since getting the promo for Better Than Love many moons ago. My main bugbear with HURTS is that whilst their image etc is cool, detached and fabulous - the stories of the guys printed everywhere paint a far less flattering picture.... they've shagged their way across Europe with a selection of decidedly unpleasant topless models. Very dull. And kind of taints them for me, too.
November 6, 201113 yr the UK haven't jumped on board because I think we've kind of seen bands like HURTS many many times before.... as much as I love them, there's not an original thought in their heads - it's all a bit pastiche at times. They're a melting pot of many of my favourite 80s bands..... nothing wrong with that, but that's the way it is. Well put. Compared to Yazoo, Erasure, Pet Shop Boys etc. they just don't have their OWN little special thing added in the mix.
November 6, 201113 yr They are not the 80s bands that I would see in the melting pot. I hear a lot more poncey bands like late 80s Simple Minds in Hurts.
November 6, 201113 yr Come on guys - HURTS doing Eurovision? They're way too 'cool' for that... and classy, too. Not to be a Eurovision loon, but this is essentially why the UK doesn't do well. Not everything in the contest is ridiculous cheap pop, that's just how it's always viewed because the UK seems to be in some pathetic irony bubble regarding it. That said, no I don't think Hurts should do it either. For the reason mentioned above it would kill their UK career as the stigma of doing it here is clearly substantial. Even beyond that I don't think they would even do that well anyway, I would like to think Juries would score them highly but as this year proved they really are a totally unknown quantity.
November 6, 201113 yr THANK YOU John. I was dying to say that. It's a pretty snobbish attitude to say that a band who WANTS to enter Eurovision shouldn't do so because they're too good for it. What act would not relish the chance to peform live for 250 million people across a whole continent? Anyway there's no point, Switzerland are winning next year with 77 Bombay Street.
November 6, 201113 yr AHHHH! Their Confide In Me is just eargasmic. Did you see this? QUZOW0o7IKo  I felt like Matt when he introduced Rihanna last year
