I'd have thought regardless of anyone's personal opinion of her Madonna is the Queen of Pop, she was a constant innovator for years and even now at least bothers to stay current, puttting out the odd great song like "4 Minutes". No Kylie, no Britney, no Mariah on Glee and only half a GaGa episode depsite her being the biggest thing since sliced bread atm. Well, that's one way to gauge it :P

yet after more than ten years in pop britney can't be arsed singing live, so she's irrelevant for me.

Agreed.

Surely it was 'Spinning Around' that got Kylie noticed again? The talk about the gold pants and her arse was everywhere at the time of it's release  'Can't Get You Out Of My Head' probably cemented her as a singles seller and is what keeps her going to this day, but it was 'Spinning Around' that kickstarted her career over again and is the reason why she's as big and popular as she is now in the UK at least. Well this is my opinion/how I see it anyway.

As for the subject at hand, I think the only acts who deserve to be named "Queen Of Pop" at this moment in time are Madonna and Britney Spears (more so Madonna, as if it wasn't for her, near enough every artist mentioned in this thread wouldn't be doing what they're doing now). Christina once was, but I think specifically after this era, she's not really anymore. Kylie probably could be classed as "Queen of Pop" I guess, but weirdly enough I think "Princess of Pop" suits her and her image a whole lot more

yes thats true, spinning around was the spark to her comeback but CGYOOMH & Fever is what really cemented her return and made her probably the most talked about pop star in those 2 years (2001/2002) and also made her relevant in the US again for a short period.

actually cant believe kylie hasnt had a UK #1 album SINCE those days.. and this week after almost a decade she's going to be at the top yet again. proud to be a kylie fan:D

How are we defining this, general and cultural impact, artistic merit or record sales?

Suggesting Mariah is ludicrious, she's spent her entire career copying whatever sound is popular in the US at that moment, except she hasn't really moved on from the past 5 years and she's now fallen out of relevancy.

I can`t agree with you.She is still great artist. She is the artist of 90s.Her single We belong together is the best single of 20`s.She had 4 # 1 songs, 2 # 1 albums, 3 Grammys last Decade. The Emancipation of Mimim is one of the best album last decade

So.....I think she is the Queen without any doubts

And

18 #1 singles and 6 #1 albums in total.

She has so many records in THE USA.So i can write it all night long.

For her 20 anniversary she has sold more than Madonna for her 30

Maybe she is not the ww Queen, but exactly in the USA

Britney Spears controls pop music her sound is still the same and it is still a success, unlike Madonna and Kylie who need to change thier sound to be a success.

Yeah. Can't argue with that I guess. OOI, where did CGYOOMH peak in the US? As much as I dislike the song and find it horribly overrated, it was well ahead of it's time, and it's really not hard to see why it still gets regular plays on UK stations today.

Oh what utter bollocks, those two are still highly successful. Hello, look who is heading to #1 in this week's album chart with very good sales.

CGYOOMH #7 and Fever #3 I think x

It peaked at #7 in the US.

Fever peaked at #3 and sold 1.5 million, 'Love At First Sight' also peaked at #23 (with an awful remix) and then she kinda faded from there on.

#7? :o I was expecting you to say something like 34 or something  That's impressive.

LOL at Sclub7fan. Seriously?

you tell him!

tbh i liked britney at the start but now i think shes just..meh. i feel like she doesnt care what she sings about anymore whether its about threesomes or tabboo songs like f.u.c.kamy. her occupation is a singer yet she doesnt even sing live at concerts.

and the radar video was just embarrassing

I do agree, back when she first came out when I was 12/13 I was practically in awe of her and she was actually very good, but nowadays she can't even sing a note (not that she tries), she's just a blank canvas for other people to work their magic on and do whatever she's told, get handed catchy songs by top producers (some of which are very good but nothing to do with her), she's basically a robot.

Britney was a sensation to star with but looking back it's easy to see why she had faded from relevance. GaGa (the only equivalent really) at least writes her own material and welcomes the life of a star, and therefore looks like she should have more longevity. Kylie's always struggled as she's never been particularly relevant in the world's biggest music industry.

Madge, love her or hate her (and I'm frankly in the middle) has released songs as iconic as either and not just one or two but a fair few, she'll be the Queen of Pop until GaGa has been around long enough.

Fever did not sell 1.5 million in the US! It was just over a million at the time. Might be 1.2m max now. Still a great achievement of course. As for Head being 'ahead of its time', it was completely of its time! Other songs which were massive hits in 2001 like Whenever Wherever still sounds so much fresher today than that does.

Suggesting Mariah is only ludicruous because she's not a pop star. She sings R&B. Globally she's sold more than Kylie (by a very considerable distance) and as much as Britney if not more (she's had more albums after all). And I hardly think she's fallen out of relevancy given that her most recent lead single was a platinum-seller and one of the end-of-year top 40 biggest hits in the US. It even managed to break the top 20 of UK iTunes with no airplay and limited video play before her idiot label took it down. When she's making the right songs and being handled properly there's clearly still demand for Mariah Carey. It's embarassing that you let your own bizarro hatred of her cloud your objectivity.

I love Britney... but she is not the Queen of Pop.

That would be Madonna.

Not if we're doing it on who the Queen of Pop today is. If we are then I'd say it's a tie between Gaga, P!nk, Britney and possibly Beyoncé (difficult to know whether she counts since many of her songs are R&B tinged at the very least). I think when you get to a certain point in your career it becomes so much more difficult to sell albums and singles - you can either do a Celine and still shift albums or do a Madonna/Mariah and still have big lead singles but managing both is hard. But Madonna's most recent lead single wasn't a hit and the album it was selling didn't match expectations either so right now, today, she's not the Queen of Pop.

Kylie is heading to the UK charts with a number one yes, but with a completely differnet sound, so she basically abandoned her true pop style, Christina Aguilera has one of the best voices for the Queens of Pop along with Whitney, Celine and Mariah.

This is getting more silly, Kylie's latest material is her true pop sound which she's known for.

You're crazy. All The Lovers is exactly the sort of song Kylie has excelled at making over the past decade and Get Outta My Way is basically Wow pt.II so she's hardly 'abandoned' her 'true pop style' whatever the hell that means.

are you kidding me? this is a joke post right? this album is what kylie DOES best. its been aknowledged by kylie herself and countless reviews that its a "classic" kylie album (as in the sound and what kylie does best) so i dont know what album you're listening to

yes christina has an AMAZING voice, however shes a flop this time around. relevant once, yes.. relevant now? not so much. thats what im talking about when I say Gaga might not be around in 10-20 years, we'll just see. its easy to have an amazing start to your career and then eventually just fade out.

Well whatever, her last album was a flop and she's got a very hard job to grapple up to anywhere close to where she was in her Emancipation era, that is the fact of the matter.

Definitely agree with the artists you chose for Queen of Pop today. It's the only way you can mention GaGa without getting "LOL. GaGa hasn't been around long enough" etc... I think I'd add Katy Perry to that list too. But definitely the four you picked by default.
