'Uses and autocue' ?!

That makes NO sense.

Your comment was unfunny and in bad taste, it's like someone taking the p*** out of Cheryl getting Malaria (which a lot of people did but that's besides the point).

you know i meant autotune. People are sometimes in a hurry mate.

I'm sorry but this comment irks me a bit. Besides being unusually snobbish for you why would most of Buzzjack be familiar with the works of Diana Ross and Cher? The great majority of their output is before most of the voters' times and when there's so much new music out there today there really isn't any requirement or necessity to go back and revisit the back catalogues of a raving egotist and a walking plastic surgery advert. From what I can tell neither particularly has a history of releasing albums which are widely acclaimed anyway. Ross was always about the voice / diva antics and Cher was a status figure and an icon. Neither exactly had their own Thriller, Ray Of Light etc.

Actually this sort of argument has always irked me a bit. Something being 'before your time is no excuse'. It's like me saying because I was born in 1972 there's no reason I should know anything about The Beatles or Beethoven, or to use a different context WWII, dinosaurs, Shakespeare or even England winning the world cup. These things are pretty much basic general knowledge and for a website devoted primarily to music fans to barely consider these iconic singers seems to me at best to be a tad blinkered. At worst it's an excuse for ignorance.

Your point about Cher and Ross never releasing widely acclaimed albums is also ironic considering Shoat was referring to Vanessa Amorosi and Ashlee Simpson. Also the whole point of the thread is for the 'ultimate female singer' so album quality is merely one variable

If people haven't discovered songs or albums from before their time then how in the hell does that make them ignorant? It's natural to be largely familiar only with what you grew up listening to. Beyond two or three songs most people my age will never have heard Diana Ross on the radio so why would they have been inspired to go check out her albums?

And my point about their lack of widely acclaimed albums stands. I'd expect many people my age to have checked out Thriller or Bad because they are considered by a great deal many people to be classic albums within a genre which shaped many of their favourite artists today, but I'd have no need to check out a Cher album from 40 years ago just to be able to claim my iTunes library has variety.

Your attitude smacks of superiority sadly.

I think, as music lovers, and further as lovers of music made by female artists we should all appreciate the ground work laid by females like Nico, Kate Bush, Dusty Springfield, Aretha Franklin, Ella Fitzgerald, Billy Holiday etc...

Of course it does. Because he is superior in his music knowledge. And that should be respected - not out of some sort of empty gesture but because you may some day discover an artist because of a recommendation of Severin. The man is an encyclopaedia.

Bitch Slap: Lady Gaga.

The reason for giving her a bitch slap is because everyone is so up her arse, and all I'm gonna say is... if she's still here in 10 years I'll take that slap back. But the fact I'm sick of her now... Js.

Never liked Kylie except for Confide In Me.

Dannii on the other hand I am secretly in love with

Is it your baby?

I love discovering music from before my time, my mum has introduced singers from the 70's such as Blondie and Sheryl Crow.

Granted the likes of Sheryl and Alanis Morissette are 90's acts, i was a baby so nothing except humpty dumpty registered

What a MADDENING post. I don't even know where to begin. I didn't realise Buzzjack had become one of those ghastly forums where you're inferior for liking what you like.

Discovering older stuff is great, just as discovering new stuff can be great - but the point is that nobody has an obligation to. Christ.

Because Cher and Diana Ross ARE prolific icons, albeit in the past. But that doesn't stop people knowing the likes of Kate Bush, Madonna, Debbie Harry etc, so I don't think Buzzjack can really get off on that excuse. It's not like either were oddities who had a solitary #73 hit back in 1969.

Although they don't have an iconic album between them, they've still got their fair share of classic hits - Believe, Chain Reaction, If I Could Turn Back Time to name merely a few, which infinitely surpasses someone who was a 2000 one-hit wonder.

And yes it is a snobby view but I wholeheartedly stand by it.

mere handful of of the list have released acclaimed albums so that is hardly a requirement for investigation.

Firstly I do not use the term ignorant in a derogatory sense, merely observational. It's very definition means to be uninformed. We are all ignorant in some way or other. Maybe I'm naive or overly optimistic to expect a website devoted to music to be populalted by music lovers - most people love music of some sort but that itself doesn't make you a music lover. Again there is nothing wrong in that.

For me I know damn well that when I was as young as 12/13 I was skipping school assembly to sneak into the library to read this weeks NME/Melody Maker and Sounds every wednesday and would watch every music tv show and always listen to JohnPeel and Annie Nightingle or the chart rundown. I knew I loved music and wanted to know more and the more I knew the more artists I wanted to know about. It wasn't quite an obsession but a healthy passion. At those teenage years the human brain has an amazing capacity for knowledge retention and I was like a sponge trying to absorb it all. This passion has yet to dim and I was far from the only boy at school who felt this way. Again maybe I shouldn't assume others to be the same but there are definately many like minded people on here, even if they tend to be less vocal and with the birth of the internet and cable tv you don't even have to leave your seat to find all these bands/singers so yes if people are 18/20 or whatevere and haven't discovered some of the glorious history of music then it is normally through their own choice and hugely acclaimed artist like Diana Ross should be among the first. Even simply googling 100 greatest female singers brings up both Cher and her on nearly every list.

I don't consider myself superior and to accuse me of that shows you have no understanding of me. Fair enough, why should you?

And as for the point about albums mattering - Elvis Presley has NEVER released a critically acclaimed album but his position as the greatest ad most influential singer of the 20th century/all time remains pretty much widely accepted and undisputed. John Lennon once said 'Before Elvis there was nothing' He was wrong of course but it made a point.

It just isn't about albums alone.

Well to be fair we've only had 60 votes so far and round about the same number of nominations which are mostly from the same group of people. It's hardly a reflection of the entire website as a whole. I'm sure if every single active member of the community had participated they'd have been a completly different list.

I decided to do this because I was tired of endless threads turning into Alexandra Vs Leona, Britney Vs Gaga or whatever. Naturally the majority of people voting here will be those who revel in those arguments [as influenced by the people who put Britney first and minus Aguilera for example :/ ]

I do agree though that there are so many fantastic artists who deserve to be included in such a list or in fact are but are doing worse than the likes of Ashley Tisdale etc  But when you look at the vast amount of members on this site. Most of them are young males who are homosexual or have some female artist worship complex so are obviously going to be more in tune with the music of today and the big stars around right now. You also fail to register it is included in the pop forum. Many fans of Indie or other genres or areas of the site don't even grace this forum. Just a look at the threads on the page of this forum should demonstrate what sort of music the members like.

I appreciate the likes of Aretha Franklin, Cher and Diana Ross to name a few. Do I personally think they make better music than P!nk or Bjork? No. But I don't deny that they are defining pillars of the female pop movement. It's not the end of the world if a few teenagers on a music forum don't appreciate them. They'll still be remembered in 20 years from now whereas I can predict 60% of the list here at least will mean nothing to the general public.

I'm going to post a link to this in the Lounge. Hopefully, it will lure more people.

Cheryl Cole has reportedly lost the use of her voice. Her performances will continue unaffected.

No offence to anyone but I think including the likes of Aretha Franklin, Billie Holiday, Tina Turner, Chrissie Hyne, Cher, Pat Benatar, Diana Ross and Dusty Sprongfield in this list is an insult to them.I thought this was a list of who we consider the modern Queens and Queens in waiting of Pop.Those ladies mentioned are icons whose careers, music, vocals, longevity, performance skills during their heyday cannot be matched by any of the singers of today. Many were groundbreaking in what they did as women and as black women forging careers when the world and the music buisness was very different and when they had alot of hurdles to face. They paved the way for modern pop Queens and are deserving of a seperate category where maybe we can vote regarding them.

Bitch slap : Lady GaGa - I like the music of course, but I hate how in the space of one year she's gone from singing a nice lil enjoyable pop song "Just dance" with silly lyrics and good melody to pretending to be the new God Of Creativity And All Kinds Of Arts. She should stop taking her music too seriously, it's bloody POP MUSIC.
