ok, forget the popularist lists compiled by the public whos tastes are often subject to debate! lol, as most of us dont really agree with that channel 4 comilation, lets list the vids here that were really good for artistic interpretation... so... please no bo-rap, no thriller, yes they were good but in essence werent the best for artistic merit. (id argue that thrillers success has as much to do with hype and hard sell marketing as anything else).

remember, this is retro... so no gaga! but i might turn a blind eye to any more recent vids that REALLY were cutting edge... (white stripes 7 nation army for eg)

heres one of the very early great videos, from one of the greatest inovators we have produced... david bowie 'ashes to ashes'

another of my personal favs, visage 'fade to grey'

i read somewhere that this next offering was the first purpose made promo film for a single. i cannot varify this now, and its very dated! however at the time it was cutting edge as were the act performing it... the yardbirds 'for your love' (1965)

over to you guys, i know many of you know some great vids by more obscure artists

I'd nominate Peter Gabriel 'Sledgehammer' purely because I would probably rank it as my fave pop music video of all time. However, his 1993 hit 'Stream' also had a unique yet bizarre music video.

The camera work in this is really good. Unfortunately there is commentary done by Tori all over this....

Rob Dougan - Clubbed to Death

Forgot how good this was

maybe there's an alternative one?

As the second biggest Belle & Sebastian fan on Earth and sort of an athlete I post this

Not very retro, the weirdest nor most groundbreaking video ever made but brilliant. 'The Blues Are Still Blue' is amazing too.

Not to pick an obvious one, but I still think Paula Abdul's 'Straight Up' video is very cool and clever. The dance moves in black and white really pop.

A few I like that haven't been mentioned yet

Also check out Happiness In Slavery by NIN but you won't find it on youtube due to 'content'

ALL of Tool's videos are worth checking out
