Serial killer franchise Saw has been named the most successful horror movie series by the Guinness World Records.

Producer Mark Burg told Reuters news agency he was "in shock" at beating other long-running movie franchises, such as Friday the 13th and Halloween.

The six Saw films, in which victims try to escape elaborate traps set by the "jigsaw killer", have made a total of $733m (£472m) at the box office.

Guinness editor Craig Glenday will present the award on Friday.

Saw made its debut in 2004, and a new film has been released for Halloween every year since.

The seventh and final instalment, which will be shown in 3D, is due out on 29 October.

"We are done; this is it. We don't want to be that boxer who fought one too many fights," Burg said.

"In every Saw movie, we left questions open and in this movie we answer every question the audience has ever had."

Although other horror films have spawned more sequels - there are 12 films based on Friday the 13th and nine for Nightmare On Elm Street - Saw has proved the biggest box office draw.

The Guinness prize will be handed over to the films' producers at the Comic-Con conference in San Diego.

Horror films at the box office:

01. Saw (6 films, 2004-2009) - $733m

02. Scream (3 films, 1996-2000) - $507m

03. Friday the 13th (12 films, 1980-2009) - $465m

04. A Nightmare On Elm Street (9 films, 1984-2009) - $447m

05. Halloween (10 films, 1978-2009) - $367m

I know a lot of people don't like 'Saw' much after the 2nd or 3rd ones, but I think it's fully deserved. I love how 'Scream' is second with just a trilogy though and both series' have done very well, considering the amount of sequels the last three in that chart have had!

Surely though, technically, Scream is still the more successful films?

I'd imagine so. Considering the amount of money they have made through just three films.

Nothing can beat Scream though

Very surprised that Saw is #1 i thought Friday the 13th would top this

Scream is so much better than Saw imo. The plot, characters, humour and the death scenes are really good too, especially the opening scenes! Saw was only good for the first three films I think (Although I absolutely hated that surgery part on Jigsaw's head in the third one, talk about unneeded :puke:), the rest were okaaaay but I wouldn't really choose to watch them again and they all sort of blur into one.

I fully expect Scream to claim the top spot after the next film and trilogy if one is happening.
Saw is probably my fave one out of all them like, so glad its #1, Alot of horrors don't interest me tbh, I don't even think that the Screams are that good.

I totally agree, unlike many horror movies i have seen, Scream manages to create a great set of characters and nice little sub plots such as the Dewey/Gale love affair. The humour also makes it easier to tune into the films.

Can't wait for the next movie :cheer:

Are those figures inflation adjusted? I'm not convinced, considering the Nightmare on Elm Street series has taken $370 million unadjusted in the US alone. Include Freddy vs Jason, and that's $450 million. Include the worldwide totals, and adjust for inflation and the total would be a huge amount higher than that.

I'd imagine the same can be said for most of the series, but I have doubts that would put Saw in first place.

Scream will crush saw when the new films come out

Out of interest here is how each one did at box office which i have took from wikipedia (world wide totals)

Saw --- $103,096,345

Saw 2 --- $147,739,965

Saw 3 --- $164,874,275

Saw 4 --- $139,352,633

Saw 5 --- $113,857,533

Saw 6 --- $64,344,699

Scream --- $173,046,663

Scream 2 --- $172,363,301

Scream 3 --- $161,843,175

Little wonder - they've made about 36 of them! Talk about bleeding an idea dry...

And Scream? That's comedy horror, not proper horror.

wow Saw 6 underperformed (compared to the rest of them) then :o

And i'd say Scream is a horror with elements of comedy.

Surely Final Destination should be on the list at 3rd.

Final Destination: $112,880,294

Final Destination 2: $90,426,405

Final Destination 3: $113,270,608

The Final Destination: $181,272,727 :o

Total: $497,850,034

and apparently filming for 5th one is starting in september, tentatively titled 5inal Destination

Yeah, that list is complete nonsense. Who the hell did the research for that?

How are they defining a series? Is that more than 2 movies? Because The Ring and The Ring 2 made over $400 million worldwide. Or are they using US gross only? If so, why? That's just ridiculous.

And they clearly are not using inflation adjusted figures, because the Halloween, Friday and Nightmare series grosses would easily be double what is shown on that list.

They should have stopped after the first, that was really a great film. The second sucked and the thrid was average and the fourth looks crazy $h!t.

'The Final Destination''s total is only that high due to it being in 3D and therefore prices are more expensive. I remember reading something about 'Avatar' only being the highest grossing movie ever, but not actually the most watched or whatever... I expect a similar thing will happen when 'Saw' release their last film...

I thought Final Destination were stopping after the fourth, hence why it was called '"THE" Final Destination'? :drama: NO MORE. The last one was awful and I don't dare watch it again (although I've bought it on DVD, for my collection) just in case it ruins the franchise for me :( Number 1 is the best but number 3 was great too. Number 2 is pretty good. But I honestly was hoping they'd stop after the third one :(

And some of the later "Freddie", "Jason" or Halloween sequels weren't totally (and unintentionally) hilarious......?

I'd agree with that.. I dont buy that the Saw films are more successful.. Freddie, Jason, Halloween, etc were absolute phenomenons in the 70s and 80s, on a MASSIVE scale with seriously obsessive fans... The Saw films don't come close to matching that sort of fan worship.... I simply don't buy the figures either tbh and would very much doubt they are adjusted according to inflation....

Hilarious? :heehee: Surely you mean just plain shit

All 4 below it plus many, many more are a hell of a lot better -_-

Well done to the people behind the series I suppose but it's very undeserved.
