Posted July 26, 201014 yr HMV Downloads Offer Top 40 Hits For 40p 4:29am UK, Monday July 26, 2010 David Williams, Sky News Online HMV has taken on iTunes with the launch of a new music download service, hmvdigital. The retailer will present a catalogue of over 10 million songs and a special promotion as it seeks to take trade away from its online rivals. The introductory offer will see every single in the top 40 UK chart made available for 40p each. The new service automatically synchronises downloads with iTunes or Windows Media Player libraries. The move is HMV's biggest development in the digital world since it acquired a 50% stake in digital music specialists 7digital - which powers Spotify - last September. Although it has offered music downloads before, the new service offers millions more tracks. Melanie Armstrong, head of music at HMV, said: "Some people still tend to think of us as a traditional retailer, but the fact is we've completely transformed our business. "The launch of hmvdigital means we now also have a world-class music download platform that creates a really engaging consumer experience and a genuine alternative to all the other digital music services currently out there." http://news.sky.com/skynews/Home/Business/...201007415670809
July 26, 201014 yr Yet people will still continue to waste their money on iTunes. That's because HMV don't do popularity bars

July 26, 201014 yr It honestly baffles me why people still use iTunes. It's a combination of things, Apple loyality, stupidity, laziness.. etc... It baffles me too how someone would pay double the price for the same track.
July 26, 201014 yr Current HMVdigital Top 40 Not a single one of them places will be the same on Sunday's chart, HMV must have less than 5% of the Singles Market, iTunes must have over 80%.
July 26, 201014 yr  @ Adam Lambert being #1, and Jedward #15, yet neither of them making the top 40 officially :kink:
July 26, 201014 yr Not only is Adam Lambert #1 there, but he has another version at #5! If only this could in some way represent the official chart. :(
July 26, 201014 yr Author  @ Adam Lambert being #1, and Jedward #15, yet neither of them making the top 40 officially :kink: Good point
July 26, 201014 yr It's a funny thing but the HMV Download Chart is very similar to the physical chart, as Adam Lambert shows.

July 26, 201014 yr Right, if Whataya Want From Me sold about 5,000 at #53 this week (last week?), then he can't of got any higher than 2,000 on HMV, as he was in the top 100 on iTunes all week (I think). I don't think HMVDigital have 5% of the singles market, maybe not even 3%.
July 26, 201014 yr I use iTunes, but only because I don't want to link my account up to stores - I buy the cards.
July 26, 201014 yr Funny how they're "launching" now, the site has been up for at least a month or so right?
July 27, 201014 yr The reason so many people hate iTunes is a similar reason to why people hate Internet Explorer, Microsoft Word, Facebook, Youtube, etc. The people that don't like them are more vocal about it, since they're so popular (whether they deserve to be popular or not is not the issue, there'll always be the people that whine, whatever software/website dominates the market).
July 27, 201014 yr Not a single one of them places will be the same on Sunday's chart, HMV must have less than 5% of the Singles Market, iTunes must have over 80%. They don't have anything remotely near 80% - they only had 70% *before* Amazon began...
July 27, 201014 yr That's because HMV don't do popularity bars  But as long as you download iTunes, you can access the popularity bars without buying anything... :P
