January 12, 201411 yr It certainly wasn't as good as the end of the last series. Overall the episode was glorious though, and affirmed my belief that Mycroft if the best thing about the show.
January 12, 201411 yr Author So good! I never saw the twist with Mary coming. I've not been reading any of the fan theories, but it's not been something that I've seen mooted other than the fact she was a prime candidate to be bumped off! Would like to know how Moriaty is alive.. that's even if it is him!
January 12, 201411 yr Author OH - and one more thing! I honestly thought at the end Sherlock was going be gunned down. The fact there had been no announcement on the fourth series (inevitable of course) and the game changer of Sherlock murdering someone, really did make me believe that the show was about to come to an end.
January 12, 201411 yr I automatically assumed Mary would end up dying but this works better for the dynamic of the show in the long run. It'd feel like a cop out for it to end up with Sherlock and John together on their own again.
January 12, 201411 yr Author Wasn't a 4th series confirmed by Benedict ages ago? Yeah he confirmed it, but no official word from the BBC yet. Always makes you wonder, especially with how big both the lead actors are now. Obviously it's a formality now.
January 13, 201411 yr Moffat has said that series 4 and 5 have been mapped out already: http://www.radiotimes.com/news/2014-01-08/...s-steven-moffat so I never expected Sherlock to be gunned down, and he obviously wasn't!
January 13, 201411 yr Well, I tend to take things Moffat says with more than his body weight in salt, but it does definitely seem like there's a bigger plan at work here. Besides, if they have it all mapped out already, they could theoretically just shoot it all at once. Yeah Benedict and Martin will be off doing other things, but if they finish the whole thing at once then it won't matter.
January 13, 201411 yr As much of a pleaser as this show is, Moffat needs to leave it for a while, at least until he leaves Doctor Who. How is it even possible for him to write something as (apparently) brilliant as this yet write (apparent) drivel for Doctor Who? Does not compute.

How is it even possible for him to write something as (apparently) brilliant as this yet write (apparent) drivel for Doctor Who? Does not compute. I don't watch Doctor Who anymore (since the Tennant era), but he has a co-writer with Sherlock (Mark Gattiss). Also I think sci-fi is really hard to write for. Everything's so crazy, you're not bound by limitations, and you can always press the reset button. This isn't possible in the Sherlock world so everything has to be written much tighter because there's no big reset button.

As Rooney says Mark Gatiss has a big hand in Sherlock too, which presumably helps, but also re. Doctor Who Moffat himself isn't the issue with the writing, it's the terrible scripts he lets other people write that is the issue. Great writer - terrible showrunner.
January 13, 201411 yr Yeh exactly he isn't the slot writer of doctor who, plus Sherlock comes about less often with fewer stories which allows longer pre-production development, ensuring the quality is higher.
January 13, 201411 yr They seem to have plotted series 4 and 5 http://www.radiotimes.com/news/2014-01-08/...s-steven-moffat

Beat you to it 11 hours ago! ;)
January 23, 201411 yr It'll probably air early 2015 / late 2015 (unless they wait until New Year 2016 OOPS :kink:) if this supposed filming clash with Doctor Who goes ahead.
July 2, 201410 yr Returning for a special followed by another 3 part series. The special will begin filming in Jan 2015 and the series being filmed later in 2015. Guessing another New Year start then for the series? Not sure when the special will air then, maybe Easter? I'm glad things are confirmed and that we have an additional episode!
July 4, 201410 yr How long is a 'special' because until the last series, each episode was 90 mins which is pretty much feature length anyway. A two-hour episode hopefully!
