Some of mine: Xiu Xiu, Baths, Perfume Genius, Jonsi/Sigur Ros, Owen Pallett, Parenthetical Girls, Grizzly Bear, Patrick Wolf, Diamond Rings, The Magnetic Fields, Mirah, Girls, Sleater-Kinney, Antony and the Johnsons, Hercules and Love Affair, The Smiths, Matmos, CSS, Belle and Sebastian, Tegan and Sara (lolololol), Broken Social Scene (okay so there's only one gay member and no one knows who but they have one of the best gay luv songs ever), etcetcetc Bloc Party / Vampire Weekend to a certain extent. I'm missing a bunch so help me fill in dose blanks y'all.
August 11, 201014 yr Does B&S have a gay member (didn't know) or do you mean they are just gay in a musical sense.? (They are imo) They're my favourite indie band ever Grizzly Bear made one of the best albums of 2009, Veckatimest. And I guess Morrissey as a solo artist Mmm.. can't think of other really gay indie faves. I find Sigur Ros a bit overrated.

Belle and Sebastian are so gay musically that one of them has to be at least bisexual. And Sigur Ros are a bit overrated perhaps, but some of their songs are so painfully BEAUTIFUL and GAY that I forgive them. Particularly Untitled #3 (Samskeyti) from ().
August 11, 201014 yr To be quite honest I don't really care about the sexuality of band members, as long as the music's good. (Although Vampire Weekend's gay member is news to me) The drummer from Suede, Simon Gilbert, is gay, and if my research is correct, he was one of the artists who lobbied the government to bring down the age of consent from 18 to 16 for homosexuals. Placebo fall into that category too.

He was part of the campaign to reduce the age of consent from 21 to 16. He appeared on Top of the Pops wearing a t-shirt with the slogan 16 Or Bust as some campaigners opposed a reduction to 18 as an unacceptable compromise. The age was eventually lowered to 18 then to 16 after Labour came to power. Brett Anderson, of course, once described himself as a bisexual man who hadn't had a homosexual experience.

August 11, 201014 yr Author The drummer's a cool kid though. I know it doesn't make the music better if members of the band are gay, but it does give it that extra oomph for me. It's depressing listening to songs after songs that are love songs from male -> female or vice versa (or just in general about a penis in a vagina); there's something incredibly powerful about a gay love song to me (Baths - 'Plea' Broken Social Scene - 'I'm Still Your Fag' Antony and the Johsnsons 'Crazy in Love'). In a genre of music so vastly dominated by straight men, it's nice for a change once in a while.
August 11, 201014 yr I love Sigur Rós, although I don't put them on that much anymore. Think it might be because it's so... sweet and honey-ish and hard to digest at the same time. Or smth. It's definitely gorgeous though.

If you want songs which reflect the fact that the songwriter is gay listen to some Kitchens of Distinction.
August 12, 201014 yr I think this is a great thread, I've listened to the songs you were talking about Ben, and Plea brought tears to my eyes, such a beautiful song musically and lyrically. I loved the video for I'm Still Your Fag, although I wasn't as keen on Crazy In Love, musically it didn't interest me. I'll check out Kitchens of Distinction Suedehead.

On Tooting Broadway Station (a break-up song) and 4 Men (unrequited love) are both specifically about men whereas Drive That Fast doesn't mention a gender.
