Hi guys, check this out... <_<

Child milk scheme may be cut, health minister admits (8 August 2010 00:02)

from: bbc.co.uk

The government is considering cutting a UK-wide scheme offering free milk to under-five-year-olds in nursery or daycare, the BBC has learned.

UK health minister Anne Milton set out the proposals in a letter to Scottish public health minister Shona Robison.

She said there was no evidence the scheme improved health and it was too expensive to run.

Instead, the government was considering increasing the value of Healthy Start vouchers for the poorest families.

The Department of Health confirmed the details of the letter but said no final decision had yet been taken.

Out of date news, the PM has dismissed the idea of it happening although I do question whether there really is a need for free school milk

And what would you know about it? <_<

but hes right, i heard that on bbc news so its not going to happen.

ps welcome to the site :)

It does look like it's not going to happen, because it would be a PR disaster for them. With that said, I actually think if we're going to be cutting stuff, free milk is a pretty pointless thing in the wide scheme of things, so it SHOULD be cut.
There was a good letter in the Independent yesterday on the subject. A number of medics agreed that there was little evidence to support continuing free milk but, as others have said, it would be a PR disaster. So, once again, we have a government running away from difficult decisions.

...and not knowing where their priorities lie... They continue this when it's hardly necessary, and let Theresa bloody May cut a programme to help battered wives/partners escape the spiral of abuse and domestic violence.... Fukkin' brilliant move from the Ant and Dec of British politics..... <_<

I wonder how many kids actually enjoy or need this free school milk. Personally when I was in primary school, in the 60's, I hated it, warm, in a glass bottle and just yucky. I know it's probably different now but most kids get milk at home anyway.

Is that story actually true? I never saw it reported anywhere other than the original source quoted on here.

Well, the initial report came from The Independent, so I would tend to give it credence....

I agree that the Indie is far more reliable than the Wail or the Distress but as I haven't seen the story elsewhere that may (no Theresa-based pun intended) mean it's not entirely true. I certainly hope so.
