010|29:07:90|DNA featuring Suzanne Vega 'Tom's Diner'

This has that typical early 90s dance sound to it, I can imagine it being a great choice for an update in the same way as You Got The Love has been. This started my love for Suzanne Vega, I loved the deadpan vocal delivery. It was also one of those rare moments that my parents and I both liked the same song - something that happens worrying often these days!

UK Chart peak: #2

Do I still listen to it? Yes. Suzanne's best of is just great.

That's better :D

You have persuaded me to (re)download The B-52s Greatest Hits. Haha. I'm liking this so far, gives me a chance to listen to some quality music I wouldn't have heard otherwise perhaps. :D

I like Roam, and even don't mind Love Shack in my drunker moments but Rock Lobster and especially Planet Claire are ace.

Tom's Diner is good too, although I prefer the original to the remix

008|10:06:90|Roxette 'It Must Have Been Love'

I'm guessing this one is also a big favourite round Suedehead's gaff. :D Oh dear, I loved Roxette and am suitably ashamed now. Sadly, it's not even the only entry in this countdown for them. Oh dear oh dear oh dear.

Do I still listen to it? I must confess to having bought their best of on CD, the wonderfully cornily titled 'Don't Bore Us... Get To The Chorus!', so yes I guess I do. :o

I love this song! I do quite like Roxette actually

011|26:08:90|Betty Boo 'Where Are You Baby?'

"I've used up all my tissues 'cause there's more serious of issues" - haha, love that line, we should have used it in our song. :( Ms Boo appears for a second and final time with the rayguntastic Where Are You Baby. The world was hers back in 1990 but then it just all went horribly wrong, poor Alison. :(

Do I still listen to it? Not really, no. It really hasn't aged as well as Doin The Do.

012|23:09:90|Depeche Mode 'World In My Eyes'

Hmmmm. My taste in acts was clearly more limited back then as everyone seems to be cropping up time and time again. This is the opening track to Violator which is one of my favourite albums of like forever and yet another high point for the mighty Mode.

UK Chart peak: #17

Do I still listen to it? Yes as it's on Violator which, as I already told you, is one of the best albums ever. Everyone should own a copy methinks.

Repeated Betty Boo - you should be locked up

Repeated Depeche Mode - have a medal

I do love a bit of DM. Shake The Disease is one of my other favourites of theirs but alas it is too early for this thread.

I bought their first single Dreaming Of Me more or less at random and have loved them ever since

Sublime. I know certain people may not appreciate her genius but that's their loss.

Did you ever hear I'm On My Way? My other favourite, oh and Hangover where she's dressed as an Indian squaw in the video

006|06:05:90|Paul Abdul 'Opposites Attract'

Sorry Aaron. :( I don't think you will approve of this from the former American Idol thing judge. I used to love this, my then girlfriend and I used to sing it too eachother all the time - although little did we realise how opposite we actually were. The cartoon cat in the video, that's probably all it took to seduce an 11 year old into liking a song. I don't hate it even now as it reminds me of very good times.

Do I still listen to it? Not unless I'm feeling particularly nostalgic.

Ooh, I dunno, it could be worse. I actually have "Straight Up" in my iTunes Library, heh. This isn't bad either, it's the only other one of hers I know!

I also LOVE that Roxette song, gotta be one of the best power ballads.

Good to see some Roxette appreciation within team Toxic.

Jonny - glad you're enjoying it, although don't expect too many great discoveries. A lot of the early stuff is very reflective of the fact I was a kid/teenager.

013|07:10:90|The Beautiful South 'A Little Time'

I was too young to remember The Housemartins but I always had a soft spot for Paul Heaton's next project. They were a remarkably consistent singles act as their 2 million plus selling best of proved and this was their only official UK #1. It always amused me that (for a very long time) Paul Heaton only ever got big hits with this band when the other members sung them. :D

UK Chart peak: #1

Do I still listen to it? Occasionally, it's a nice enough little tune.

They - and The Housemartins - released a string of good singles.

014|28:10:90|Pet Shop Boys 'So Hard'

The first #1 on my chart for the mighty Pet Shop Boys was So Hard, their Moroder inspired first single from the Behaviour album. I love this more now than I actually did even back then, primarily as I didn't really understand the song at all and just loved the synths. If you excuse the innuendo laden title, the rest of the lyrics are a really clever tale of distrust in a relationship - a theme that is continued on their next #1 in my chart.

UK Chart peak: #4

Do I still listen to it? Yes, the PSBs have developed into one of my favourite ever acts, consistently great albums and singles since 1985 which is no mean feat at all.

25 years of brilliance and still going

This came up on my mp3 player today whilst driving down to Bath.

I'd forgotten how good it is and then it appears here as well. Coincidence...?

Oh no I'm quite geeky sometimes. Mind you I've only kind of done it since I joined CHC. Not sure what that says.I actually wish I'd started it around 1985 when I got really serious about music but it'd be full of really obscure weirdo stuff nobody would like. And it's more based on most played than favourite but usually they tie up.

I've just realised I have boxes of old tapes and mini discs where I used to put my favourites singles of the year on come xmas time, so I can probably actually work out what would have been my number 1s retroactively with some pretty solid accuracy as far back as around '86 by checking the release dates, chart entries and my memory of what I loved most. That's given me a mission as much for my own curiosity as anything else.
