Ah, my parents were really cool music wise. My mum loved T-Rex and David Bowie while my dad liked all the old soul and singer songwriter stuff like Aretha Franklin, Roberta Flack, Joni Mitchell etc.

They only really hated my music when it strayed too far into the dance genre, they especially hated my taste in the late 90s when trance was everywhere among my sixth form.

My dad liked Simon & Garfunkel and some Beatles stuff but that was about it. Both my parents are more into opera and stuff like that. Whenever I put together tapes to be played in the car I had to be fairly selective. As an experiment I sent them a link to One Day Like This (the version with the BBC Concert Orchestra) on youtube a year or so ago and they both rather liked that.

Continuing the bouncing around of genres that was my 90s, next up are Jesus Jones who probably join EMF and The Farm as lucky sods who somehow happened to be around in the early 90s and bad vocals and a bouncy beat was in. They're quite a fun band actually, I remember really rather liking all of the singles from their album. I imagine either Suedehead or Severin may have bought it, is it worth me getting?

Do I still listen to it? No, haven't heard it in over a decade. I did enjoy it though so maybe it's time for a JJ revival! :o

Sorry, I always thought of these guys as a poor mans PWEI. However, Info Freako was great

020|03:02:91|The KLF '3AM Eternal'

This was probably my first real foray into dance music and definitely the first song I remember buying that my mum thought was a total racket. They had an amazing 1991 and this topped the charts after What Time Is Love had set their stall out in 1990, my favourite of theirs is still to come though...

Do I still listen to it? Yes, their The White Room album is always a fun listen when you're in the right mood.

Maverick geniuses(?). Buy any book written by Bill Drummond (particularly if Mark manning co-writes)

I've listened to all of it and found some good tunes. The Beautiful South are one of my all time favourite bands though - along with The Housemartins. 'A Little Time' is, like you said, a nice little tune but they had some better stuff as the years went on. '36D' is my all time favourite.
If you ask nicely I might try to find youtube versions of some of the songs I liked when I first started choosing my own music

Yes, do it.

In fact, we should ALL do it as a requirement of team membership

I feel that they are unfairly laughed at by a lot of serious music types but they had some really great tracks on their albums. My favourite is probably Prettiest Eyes as I like the way he relates the lines of her face to the stories they hold and sees the beauty in them.

That said, I haven't listened to them in a while so I could be forgetting some other gem instead. Think I may make myself a new best of CD for the car, I'm just in the mood for them. :D

021|03:03:91|Madonna 'Crazy For You'

This was originally released back in 1985 and I can't pretend to remember it from the first time around. This re-release was taken from her Immaculate Collection which surely has to go down as one of the best compilations ever, especially when you consider the comparatively short period of time it covers. This was never one of my immediate favourites but my then girlfriend and I used to listen to the CD together and she loved it to the point that it eventually became our song - we were absolutely besotted with eachother in a way that only 11 year olds could be and we used to listen to this track at exactly 9pm each night so we knew what the other was doing. I can't decide if that's cute or sad now!

UK Chart peak: #2 (twice)

Do I still listen to it? Not very often but my then girlfriend is now my very best friend and we do occasionally still listen to it for old time's sake.

022|17:03:91|Madonna 'Rescue Me'

I think this is the only time that the same act will replaced themselves in this rundown. For some reason Madonna decided to re-issue Crazy For You and also issue the final new song from The Immaculate Collection, Rescue Me. I don't think this is remembered particularly fondly but I still quite like it, the beat grabs me for some reason and it's a suitably epic end to the album.

Do I still listen to it? Yes, it would probably make a best of Madge CD if I ever made one.

023|24:03:91|Roxette 'Joyride'

Ahhhhh, more Roxette. This song is a tad ridiculous I guess, it doesn't really have any meaning but it was just too catchy back then and I was most definitely a fool who joined the joyride. Everyone my age seemed to love these guys, not sure how they never managed to get a #1 over here in the UK.

UK Chart peak: #4

Do I still listen to it? Much like other Roxette stuff, only when I'm in a nostalgic mood.

My favourite Madonna song ever. Maybe it's not her best song but there's just something special about. I was 12 when it came out first time, oddly enough.

Oh and I think that 9pm thing is quite sweet really

Possibly because everyone my age didn't love them :P

How did they not get a number one? Because just occasionally the Great British Public show a degree of good taste

024|21:04:91|The Beautiful South 'Let Love Speak Up Itself'

Yet more Beautiful South! This was the final single from the Choke album and was yet another flop for them. Considering how big A Little Time was, it's odd that both the follow ups failed to even crack the top 40. I think this is possibly their most under appreciated track as it's really quite beautiful lyrically. I also like the version on the double disc set of Carry On Up The Charts which had Jacqueline singing the song instead of Paul, she performs it equally well and brings a different take on it akin to both partners in the couple singing it. (I assume this wasn't also on the single disc version, I never bought that but always heard it was exclusive to the double disc set).

Do I still listen to it? Yes, just this morning in fact. :D

Either that or they were buying something much worse like Chesney Hawkes

Haha, I had a feeling you and Severin may think that way! :D

I meant my comment as how I felt at the time, it just seemed like everyone I knew loved them and it was genuinely baffling to me at the time that they didn't sell more. Obviously in retrospect I can see how they were probably not suited to a more mature ear!

I would never have guessed this was your favourite of hers. :o

I like it lyrically, it's very obvious but there's something quite beautiful and simplistic about the delivery and imagery.

Oh and next up is the one that I am most ashamed to have to post out of the entire list.
