I have never heard anything other than What's Up so 4 Non Blondes were a true one hit wonder on my chart, even if Linda Perry would go on to have more success as a writer (most notably with Christina Aguilera and Pink). UK Chart peak: #2 Do I still listen to it? No, although I have just downloaded it as I thought I ought to at least own everything in my list again.

Sadly they omitted this from their first best of compilation and in the process lost a sale to me, they did however rectify this on the superior Midlife compilation released not so long ago... this was about the time that I really began to investigate indie music with me having bought both the Suede and Blur albums by now, I remember thinking how much I loved this sort of thing but it wasn't successful enough in the charts for me to know which other bands to investigate (and of course you didn't have the internet back then to help you discover new music with quite the same level of ease). UK Chart peak: #28 Do I still listen to it? Yes, it remains one of my favourites of theirs.

As well as indie music taking over my life, there was also quite a lot of Europop/Eurodance available at the time and some of it (such as this) was just inescapable! :D I'm listening to this on youtube at the moment and I'm really not hating it anywhere near as much as I suspected! UK Chart peak: #2 Do I still listen to it? Nope but I am sort of tempted to make a cheesy eurodance revival CD now!

I didn't realise it at the time but she was famed for singing with Massive Attack and does the vocals on their sublime singles Unfinished Sympathy and Safe From Harm. This isn't quite up there with those two but again I'm listening now and it's pleasant enough - it's another I'm going to have to download again. UK Chart peak: #19 Do I still listen to it? Nope. Although I'm going to find the 12" version somewhere as I haven't heard it since, probably, 1993!

October 17, 201015 yr Author wyciLWAv9BA 075|01:08:93|Janet Jackson 'If' I'd never really paid attention to Janet Jackson before but she went through a small period of being okay in the mid 90s I think. Whilst her vocals are not the best (although I never noticed at the time), I do like the production on this track and think it was definitely a step in the right direction for her. I quite liked That's The Way Love Goes from this era also now I think about it. Plus this was the beginning of her obsession with having a ridiculous number of tracks on her albums only to discover that at least half were silly 10 second long breathy interludes. I guess they were meant to be arty but in reality they were all rather cringeworthy. UK Chart peak: #14 Do I still listen to it? Nah. I do still think it's one of her better tracks but she no longer floats my boat.
October 17, 201015 yr Author LMyg9SIeM3c 076|15:08:93|Culture Beat 'Mr Vain' :D Ahhhhhhh, more europap. Another that was everywhere and I succumbed to as it was just really cool to like as a young teenager. It took me ages to find a video of the version that was actually released too, the one in the official youtube vids was just completely wrong. Anyway, I can't talk about this one for long... UK Chart peak: #1 Do I still listen to it? Nope. Although it's another to add for my cheesy dance pop CD in the making...
October 17, 201015 yr Author 8H8uFLYL0nM 077|29:08:93|SWV 'Right Here (Human Nature)' R&B is probably one of the more underrepresented genres in my history but this one did manage to strike a chord with me. I loved the sample, even though I again didn't know it was a sample at the time. In retrospect there's not a lot more to this track as it portrays your typical lyric about wanting love and the problems that come with that etc. Still, it was a nice trip down memory lane for me just now... UK Chart peak: #3 Do I still listen to it? No, yet again. This has not been a good run!

I remember listening to the chart show and not realising this song existed, they got to #2 and played this as a new entry and I thought it was one of the most instantly amazing things that I'd ever heard ( ), I rushed out to buy it on Monday and listened to it non-stop. Next week I was convinced it would be #1 but I hadn't counted on Boom Shake the bloody Room being around to prevent it from climbing. Anyway, back to the track, I'm watching this video (in extended form) for the first time and can completely understand why everyone thought it was amazing back then - I love their hats even now! :D UK Chart peak: #2 Do I still listen to it? Yes but it's not really one of my favourites of theirs any longer, although it remains better than the hideous New York City Boys that they would release in a few years time.

The PSBs have always done good cover versions. They pulled off quite a trick here by making their version even more camp than the original. Glad you've posted the extended version
October 17, 201015 yr Author 9GNhdQRbXhc 079|03:10:93|Meat Loaf 'I Would Do Anything For Love (But I Won't Do That)' Yep, another trend that I played a part in. I'm not quite sure how Meat Loaf became kinda trendy in 1993 but this he somehow did. This was #1 for ages and it seemed like something really different at the time even though it's clearly just OTT nonsense. This was my one and only venture into dad rock territory and I pray to god it remains this way forever. Oddly, it took me about 20 views of the video before I realised that Meat Loaf was supposed to be some monstrous thing at the beginning, there really isn't much of a transformation at the end! :D UK Chart peak: #1 Do I still listen to it? October 17, 201015 yr Author b59vRrChzko 080|24:10:93|The Goodmen 'Give It Up' I was going to say that this is next in line to go on my tacky europap CD but I've just listened again to it on youtube and it's aged quite well really. It's the drum work that sets this apart from similar dance tracks from this era, it really is quite amazing. Alas Simply Red would go on to steal them for their Fairground monstrosity but even that hasn't detracted from my enjoyment. I need to download this again ASAP methinks. UK Chart peak: #5 (better than I remember :o ) Do I still listen to it? It was going to be a no but I intend to put that right
October 17, 201015 yr Aside from the brilliant Go West I'm really not very keen on the last few I'm afraid
October 17, 201015 yr Author That's fine - I wasn't expecting anyone to like any of the last few! :D It's been really intriguing for me doing this, I can't believe I used to like some of the things I did. How times and tastes change! I do adore the one coming up next though...
October 17, 201015 yr Author CHiHZ35TPfM 081|31:10:93|Björk with David Arnold 'Play Dead' I had been aware of Björk before this point but I had dismissed her as being quirky for the sake of it and just music for those who were willfully obscure (like myself now!) but this really turned my opinion around. The vocal, the strings, the atmosphere, the lyrics, everything is just perfect and it still remains one of her very best singles imo. UK Chart peak: #12 Do I still listen to it? Absolutely! It's amazing.
October 17, 201015 yr Author WXvB3w3hu6Y 082|07:11:93|Cappella 'U Got 2 Let The Music' This brings back great memories of going on the waltzer at the local fairground that used to occasionally appear in the field near our school, we would all go out at lunch and spend our pocket money on it while the likes of this and Corona's Rhythm Of The Night blasted out at full volume. Great times. This is another definite for the europap CD! :D UK Chart peak: #2 Do I still listen to it? Nah but again I didn't mind listening to it just now.
October 17, 201015 yr Author RGiQ6oJjvoQ 083|21:11:93|Terence Trent D'arby 'Let Her Down Easy' I've not heard this since the time but I used to really like TTD. For some reason he appears to now be called Sananda Maitreya (I assume that is his real name?) and all his videos are blocked from the UK so it won't let me watch them. So instead here's a live version which has a pretty decent vocal as I'm listening now... this is your typical sweet ballad from him that I would probably never listen to these days but it's nice enough in it's own way. UK Chart peak: #18 Do I still listen to it? No, yet again. 1993 is not proving to be a vintage year! Edited October 17, 201015 yr by Dandy*
